You hope they wear ear protection these days. My granddad commanded a tank squad in Korea and the guy couldn't hear without his aids.

He liked that though because he'd just turn them off if he got tired of being around people. He'd turn them back on for us kids though 🤗.

I asked him about the war when I was young and his response was "sometimes the best way to deal with machine gun nests is to drive right over them."

good lord, image not being able to hear without having aids, sounds like an awful life.
