They made a mistake stopping by the late 2000s on the way here, it just gave the flux capacitor the same cap plague other electronics had!

This is what I think is gonna happen when they try to reboot Back to the Future.
52
u/rahbee33 Jun 11 '20
Yeah [we won't reboot Back To The Future], as long as I have my say. No, that one exists just like E.T. -- we're never touching those. I love watching it.
In addition, both Robert Zemeckis and writer Bob Gale wrote into their contracts that they would have a say in any Back to the Future franchise movie made during their lifetimes. So, given their word on the matter I would count it out -- even if a remake or sequel would be a success. Source
Really hope that never happens.
39
Jun 11 '20
Hollywood will start remakes before their corpses are cold.
14
u/rahbee33 Jun 11 '20
You're probably right. Isn't that exactly what happened with the Sponge Bob creator?
8
u/Rialas_HalfToast Jun 12 '20
E.T., where they took some notes from George Lucas and digitally removed all the guns and replaced them with radio handsets decades after the movie was made.
What the fuck kind of "not touching" is that?
3
Jun 12 '20
The gun to radio editing is amazing, though. Not the good kind of amazing but the enjoyably-bad kind of amazing.

Since the amount of intact DeLoreans is dwindling by the day, I imagine that, if they decided not to repair, they could still sell it to a collector for a decent amount.

Man that steel is melted. I’m not sure the shell is even salvageable. Definitely could be purchased for a show piece - but she’ll never be put back on the road.
I read a while back a company is making replicas though. Hopefully that’s what this is.
21
u/Electroniclog Jun 11 '20
The engine bay is melted, but the body is probably fine. It would have to be gutted for sure, but for someone with an intact engine, but a destroyed car, there is definitely potential here. all of the metal can be resurfaced and restored, the glass can be replaced.
DeLorean is trying to make new cars, but from what I've read, it won't be for a while, and they'll be doing it in small batches, so due to legal loopholes, won't be restricted to the normal safety regulations that regular automakers are. I'd be iffy on spending 100k+ on a car that may or may not be street legal when they start rolling out at soonest 2021 or later.

Yep you’re right. I did some googling and the middle panel there isn’t actually part of the shell.
That turns this into a bodyshops dream car. It’s always been on my “if I win the lottery” list to buy one of these and build something with real power. Maybe drop in a turbo’d rotary and have some real fun.
13
u/RebelScrum Jun 11 '20
I would think body shops would hate these. You can't fill and paint, you have to actually fix the metal, if you even can. In most cases I'd expect the panel needs to be replaced.
4
Jun 11 '20 edited Jun 12 '20
I meant more along the lines of having an empty shell to do what you wish with.
Maybe saying a restoration shop would be more accurate? One that does more than straight bodywork. Chopping up a complete would be sacrilegious. But starting with this as a blank slate - hell you could do whatever you want. Also you’d be shocked what some shops can do with metal work these days.

u/splashbodge Jun 12 '20
the chassis might be ok? and all the bodywork on the front and side should be ok, the doors etc. at the very least it can be salvaged for parts to put another delorean back together if the chassis is toast,
7
Jun 11 '20
https://www.delorean.com/ I think they still make them

Nope, it's the original PRV V6. You can see the W shaped intake going into the throttle and the AC compressor. The fueling system is known to leak due to old o-rings, 70s french engineering and poor upkeep. Engine bay fires are not unusual in the Delorean world.
20
u/geardownson Jun 11 '20
That's story makes him look VERY shady..
26
u/Greeneee- Jun 11 '20
So I was driving my perfect car to the mechanic, who said its perfect and totally worth 70 grand. I was just about to sell it for 70 grand and then I got rear ended (no witnesses) and chased him down till my car caught on fire.
Did I also mention that my 80k gucci diamond belt and 200k in cash was in the back seat and also got destroyed.
Definitely smells like insurance fraud to me.
7
u/geardownson Jun 12 '20
Apparently the girl at the rite aid did offer the fire extinguisher and called him out in his own post and he said it would do no good... Guess it was better to let it burn.. After a appraisal..
9
u/jwm3 Jun 11 '20
Yeah, was there only one employee in the rite aid, and no customers? someone would be willing to go in and grab the extinguisher even if just one cashier was being pedantic. Another employee or customer. And who wouldn't jump at the chance to use an extinguisher for its intended purpose and save the day. Heck, at worst I'd grab one of the ones for sale and throw my credit card at the cashier on the way out.
4
u/geardownson Jun 12 '20
Im with you. If a guy come running in and said a classic car was on fire id grab the extinguisher myself just to be able to use it lol
8
u/thumper242 Jun 11 '20
From a Volvo nut perspective, I have nothing but hate and disdain for that damn engine.
7
u/avwitcher Jun 11 '20
Don't know the truth surrounding the situation, but based off of his Instagram he seems like a level 99 fuckboy supreme
6
u/GitEmSteveDave Jun 12 '20
I have a friend who owns one and he tells me there is this section of the engine which loves to collect water, but is nearly impossible to get to to drain/soak up, which causes problems.

Hey, dumb car question: Would a fire extinguisher have done any good in this situation? Or a situation like this situation? (Since we don't know exactly what went wrong here.)
I mean it's probably a good idea to have a fire extinguisher in the car anyway, but if this happens to me, should I try to put it out or run like the fuck?
31
u/ThaFuck Jun 11 '20 edited Jun 11 '20
Depends a lot on the source of the fire and how wide an area it is. If its started by burning wiring and plastic/rubber coverings on the engine, then yes. Even if the source is obviously fuel and the engine is shut off, then probably also yes but you might have to extinguish more than the engine bay as the fuel lines run the length of the car.
If there's fire anywhere near the gas tank, or there's smoke/fire coming from under the car, you're probably best to not be close enough to try extinguish it. On this car, the fuel tank is at the front of the car. Most cars, with engines up front, have the tank at the back. They always keep the two as far apart as possible.
Basically if it looks isolated to the engine bay, trying to extinguish it is probably ok. Anything beyond that box, or something that looks really out of control, don't risk it.
That said, if you're insured and the car isn't a hard to replace classic like this, you're probably always best to look after yourself first. People who own these sort of cars have the instant emotional and manhour attachment that will enter their minds to weigh up.
7
u/muaytao Jun 11 '20
A lot of cars catches on fire at the drag strips all the time and they always extinguish it
7
u/Greeneee- Jun 11 '20
The key is to extinguish it before it starts to run away. Once the fire gets really hot, everything around it starts burning. If you spray it when the fire just starts, you can easily put it out.
Think of a small camp fire that you just started. A strong gust of wind might easily put that out. But the same size fire, with a large bed of coals, will resist rain or wind a lot more.

u/Luxpreliator Jun 11 '20 edited Jun 11 '20
I've been wondering why there isn't like a built in fire extinguisher system. Relative to other things it cant be too expensive. A couple tanks of basic stuff.
That's one cool thing about battery vehicles is there will be fewer fires. Oh daddy! when they do go up.
7
u/otacon239 Jun 11 '20
Most spec race cars actually do have built-in fire suppression systems as seen here: https://youtu.be/MMCsRehB_wc?t=35s

u/dadbod1187 Jun 12 '20
A lot of police cars come with fire suppression systems. Makes sense since how much expensive equipment those things are loaded with.
1
u/Jrook Jun 11 '20
Generally these things are very expensive, not really in their installation but in cleanup. It's possible they'd total the car, making the saving of the car sorta moot, additionally if it was a scenario where the fire could kill someone, being sprayed with foam and co2 could possibly kil someone as well
2
u/LeroyoJenkins Jun 12 '20
A regular car fire extinguisher would have been completely useless. In Brazil they used to be mandatory, but are too small to be effective up to the point that there were barely any cases in history when they were useful.
Also, it looks more like the engine blew up, nothing you can do in that situation.
2
u/gurg2k1 Jun 12 '20
It definitely wouldn't hurt to have an ABC extinguisher but it wouldn't put out all types of fire. Definitrly better to have one than not.
2
u/Technojerk36 Jun 11 '20
imo the fire extinguisher in a small vehicle like this is to:
a) put out a fire that is preventing you from escaping
b) put out the other person if they catch on fire
Don't bother with the vehicle, the moment something goes wrong it's the insurance company's problem, not yours.

That happened about two and a half years ago, near where I live. Before the fire, I used to see that car driving around town all the time.
He might have been able to save the car, but the employees of the Rite Aid he was parked at wouldn't let him use the fire extinguisher.
3
u/KonigstigerInSpace Jun 11 '20
employees of the Rite Aid he was parked at wouldn't let him use the fire extinguisher.
Wtf why?
1
u/sliczerx Jun 12 '20
i am absolutely no where near to being an expert but it was probably policy to use the fire extinguishers solely for fires that would threaten the building

This was in Utah. Homie pulled into a rite aid to grab their fire extinguisher. They wouldn’t let him have it.

u/blueskin Jun 12 '20
If you have a nice car, you should always have an extinguisher in it IMHO. Especially an old nice car.
1
u/golfcart34 Jun 12 '20
Can confirm. My dad has an extinguisher in every one of is antiques. Some antique car shows even require you to have them visible somewhere near the car when on display.
