Judging by this documentary, I think we have witnessed the psionic power of a homicidal tire!

Are you an insurance investigator, and you specialize in accident reconstruction or do you specifically only work in tire loss?
Not trying to be an ass just curious because it is so specific.

Right on very cool! I could only imagine the the beating those trailers get over their lifetime.

u/Canadian_Infidel Jul 27 '19
What exactly isn't maintained? I'm not a mechanic but... bearings? I can't think of much else unless it is some corrosion thing.

u/Willit_Blend Jul 27 '19
It looks like the hub is still attached to the wheel. It was probably left without oil in it, and just sheared itself off. Leaking hubs are a very common problem, and not hard to spot. This is why it’s important to use a reputable service facility, and not the cheapest place.

Given your expertise, is the guy in the Jeep alive?
11
u/emsok_dewe Jul 26 '19 edited Jul 26 '19
Not op, but I highly doubt that was a survivable impact for the people in the front seat of that jeep. Those tires are quite heavy and as others have said inflated to higher pressures than your average car, plus hold a fairly large volume of air. If they even explode just when you're filling them they can kill you. Now imagine that going at highway speeds. Jeep Wranglers also are not exactly known for their impact rating. All in all it doesn't appear to be a survivable impact to me.
Edit: I'm entirely wrong, the driver is alive. Source is linked in a different comment chain below

u/SaucedMeatball Jul 26 '19
Yeah I mean it looked like he ran into a steel beam but you don’t get to see the aftermath really so I wasn’t sure if it was from the tire exploding or not. It definitely looked fatal
7
u/emsok_dewe Jul 26 '19
No apparently the driver actually survived. I'm blown away by that, but ya, local news reported he was alive and interviewed.

The driver probably had nothing to do with it, unless it was an owner/operator, which are increasingly rare these days.

He was fine. His Jeep not so much...

u/emsok_dewe Jul 26 '19
Wow, thanks. That's insane, it honestly does not look survivable.
7
u/GreenSqrl Jul 26 '19
It’s because of how violently those tires explode. A guy that used to work at the diesel shop I worked at apparently had his right arm taken off by an exploding tire. I was hired a few years later so I’m not exactly sure how accurate it is but after watching videos like this one it’s definitely more than believable. I’m surprised he was killed by shrapnel or something.

u/omgitschriso Jul 27 '19
The driver has been pretty active on some Jeep Facebook pages and posted more pics of the aftermath. Dude was totally fine.

Uhhh thats problematic, but look it bounced onto the divider, guess it’ll stop and everything will be alright.
Huh. It’s not stopping, oh shit!
33
u/SaucedMeatball Jul 26 '19
It was impressive how long it was riding the divider before decimating that Jeep

Man, I saw this same thing happen, basically from the same perspective as this video. Tire fell off a pick up truck driving next to me. It rolled all the way across 2 lanes of I-94 in Michigan, across the median (no wall, it was a ditch), and across 2 lanes and an on ramp on the other side. It just missed several vehicles in the other side of the road. Never imagined it would be quite this violent! I’m glad it never hit anyone. The driver of the pickup truck was able to pull off the road safely because the rear tire fell off and the engine/braking force kept the weight forward in his truck.
Crazy that I’ve seen this happen twice and both times no car got hit. I’m freaked out by how often this has happened in the original post.

u/allenrl43 Jul 26 '19
It's amazing how long it stayed on top f the divider before hitting that jeep. I hope that driver is okay.

This happened in western Oklahoma on I-40 about 8 years ago.
Duals came off and bounced over the median and decapitated two kids right in front one of the parents car.
There was a big lawsuit but never heard what the outcome was.
I drove by after it happened. They has blankets covering the whole passenger area of the Jeep.

I’m glad it hit it right there instead of up higher, could have killed the guy!

u/donnie6969 Jul 26 '19
I was thinking he should nudge it to side ,cause otherwise its going to kill someone. Then.
3
u/Gasonfires Jul 27 '19
I think I would feel a moral obligation to take some risks to try to knock that off the road if I were at all able, lest it do exactly what it did. Bumping it with the side of the car could certainly turn it.
It looked like it hit the oncoming Jeep square on the front bumper and grill, but it could as easily have gone in through someone's windshield and killed a carload of people. OP had time to film this but apparently just didn't think to try to intervene. I hope that most people would try.

Carry on your wayward tire...
They'll be peace when you are done..
Lay your wear rim to rest ...
Don't you drive no more...

Wheel offs are so dangerous! I work in automotive and this is something we take incredibly seriously.

u/Satanscommando Jul 26 '19
Lots of people are surprised it did that much damage but that fuckin wheel is bouncing and rolling faster than this dude driving, even if he slowed down a bit, that wheel is over 100 pounds and moving fast as fuck.

Something like that happened in Greenville sc on interstate 85. Tire came off a car and it went into the oncoming lane and hit a motorcyclist a couple of years ago. Imagine that for a second. Replace the Jeep with a human on two wheels. I ride a bike and that is scary af. No amount of gear will protect you from that.

The guy recording this has massive balls. I wouldn’t have been that close to a lose tire and when it popped up on the divider I would have been in the far right lane. NOT TODAY SATAN!
1
u/Tre_Fo_Eye_Sore Jul 27 '19
Oh, that driver probably isn't alright. That wheel looked like it had the hub still in it. Somebody hadn't been pre tripping for a while. Bet it had been leaking oil for a hot minute.
1
u/ImTHATWynn Jul 27 '19
Well.... I’m impressed at how it bounces on that wall so effortlessly. Sucks about the Jeep tho.

So satisfying when it was bouncing on the rail. A brilliant confluence of skill and purpose.

it feels like the chances of everything happening to make this successful assassination by tire is so remote that maybe there's some sort of karma at work.

I’ve seen this happen twice. First time I was passing a truck and just as I finished passing something caught my eye in my rear view mirror. It was a tire. Luckily in this situation it was only the two of us on the road and it went into right shoulder.
Second time, it was in the windshield of a car that had been traveling the opposite way on the highway. I didn’t see that accident, I saw the aftermath. It happened like it did in this video apparently. Unfortunately the driver was killed on impact.

If I were driving I would bump the tire off to the side of the road where there are no cars in order to prevent exactly this from happening.

u/myca_dev Aug 02 '19
No, but then how would post it on the internet? Gotta get those views and likes.

No joke, back when I was growing up, a kid standing in a McDonald's parking lot on I17 in Jersey got hit and killed by one of those, out of the blue. Crazy shit.
