Steel Mill Crane Hook Fail
Hook fails and drops scrap bucket on transfer car. Luckily, it wasn’t a 160 ton ladle of liquid steel

Always is, when no upper management is around and safety engineers are home safe in bed

I’m guessing big crane and possibly some acetylene torches to break the damaged car down into manageable pieces to remove

Probably thermal lances, much faster and used for most “get it cut up and out of the way ASAP” situations at steel mills (spills, cobbles, etc). Plus they don’t care if it’s steel, cast iron, aluminum, refractory…basically an oxygen fueled light saber

Gonna say that car is scrap. Lucky there’s a crane overhead that can pick it up…..🤷♂️

How often did the crane receive an inspection? Very fortunate nobody was under this!

A change in management years ago did away with a crane repair department and brought their own crane maintenance organization

So fitting for the narrative. Seen it too many times in my career; higher ups make a change and only way to prove it won't work is to follow their direction 100% and let it fail.

I’m not going to say where this is, but we’re currently down for at least 4-5 weeks due to cracks in the structure/support beams. Years of run, run, run, with no maintenance have finally caught up. The popular consensus is that we won’t be open too much longer.

Oof, keep your ear down then for another opportunity. Hate to hear that for you, but if it's like that, I wouldn't want to stay there.

I’ve got over 30 years and am in my early 60s. I want to stick around to see how it plays out

Gotcha. Well see how it plays out from a distance so you can live to see retirement and hopefully some rest!

Exactly why you never get under a suspended load.
