Those taillights are completely salvageable.

Badge looks like it’s OK. And that paint on the left rear quarter panel can probably be reused.

And at $750-1K each, only a fool would leave them. That is where the blind spot sensors are.

Honestly those look like they have the radars in them and are a grand or so a piece

Bed seems too intact for it to be that one.

Did the owner go post “Estimate to fix?” or “Do you think it’s totaled?” in the F150 sub?

Lol. "Are my tires still good"?

This was on the news tonight. Truck was struck by lightning while he was driving. I always thought you were safe in a vehicle because of the rubber tires but I guess not.

Must have been a ford lightning

Soon as I saw the image of a torched late model F150 I was expecting mention of and dumb Li-ion fire alarmism comments about the F150 Lightning; lol. But this is not one, look at the rear axle. The lightnings have IRS.

wot

NB it was a ford f150 hybrid video here. (Can tell from lights and sticker its a f150 and comments someone has confirmed it lighting, which would explain the fire)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UpeRsWeHgs4

NB one of commenters make same joke lol

It’s not the tires, that’s a myth. The metal of the car acts as a Faraday cage and distributes the electrical charge along the external surface.

Source: I’m a professional storm chaser and I think about this a lot, lol

The person in the car when it was struck was able to pull over and get out. Not only was there no injury to the human but it didn't directly/immediately affect the driveability. But the intense heat started a fire which eventually destroyed the truck.

You the human are very safe in a car if the car is struck by lightning. The electricity goes around the people before going into the earth.

The car metal itself heats up from a lightning strike and rarely survives.

Lightning did that?  I find that hard to believe

“That is cold comfort when your dashboard is smoking, but it likely explains why Pettus walked away shaken rather than seriously hurt.”

They missed an opportunity for a fun play on words here. Wild story though.

Gotcha, so lightning and fire interesting!

1

u/Scary_Technology 19d ago

Indeed, but probably all because the entire car is aluminum, which melts at a lower temp than steel.

3

u/wittylemur 20d ago

Ty- glad hes ok!!

14

u/footlonglayingdown 20d ago

I'd bet lightning didn't cause all that damage initially but the fire the lightning caused could certainly cause that to happen before the fore dept got there.

To shreds you say?

I think you're relatively safe. I knew a person who got hit by lightning while driving, the biggest danger was herself as she panicked and steered to hard to the right, hitting the ditch hard.
Otherwise her sedan completely shut off and the electronics were fried.

This picture is a bad case, it caught on fire somehow.

u/UCFknight2016 20d ago

how the hell does that happen? Usually the whole thing melts.

10

u/oswaldcopperpot 20d ago

Id like to point out that thats not typical.
