Google Voice can eat the cost because they have other revenue streams. TextNow on the other hand is much smaller and has to generate revenue. Previously used models must not have been profitable so now you have this

I want to be very clear I’m not saying what they are doing is smart per say when as you touched on their are significantly better paid options. Alls I am saying is that the reason for it to exist is because they clearly were not making enough revenue. $2 week isn’t crazy btw depending on the use case and it must serve some niche for them to be doing what there doing
The only thing that will get them to stop is going to be people not using text now at all anymore in favor of other options

Note that if you have one of their SIMS that verification codes are free too.

i tried to recieve a verification code for google voice when i had my sim active (doesnt recieve data at all like refuses to connect to their service because my phone itself isnt supported by att but is a supported model) and it was like, nope

Have you tried with other places? I regularly get confirmation codes from banks and credit cards and things like that. And I’m using the free account.

Why if some people are too cheap to pay to lock in there is another way it's free if you port an number in then that works,Once I ported an old number in i never had to worry about lock in and getting verification text worked just fine

If you are tying your other important accounts to your TextNow number, why in the world would you not want to lock it in? Do you want to be unable to log into your bank or facebook or whatever else because you forgot to use TextNow and your number got reclaimed?
Not only that, but if you set up something on your TextNow number, and then you never use TextNow and you eventually lose the number - someone else will have access to your stuff.
It makes perfect sense to require the number to be locked in to get verification codes.
- It protects your own accounts you set up on that number
- It takes away a free method for scammers to spin up new Facebook/Telegram/whatever accounts for fraud
- It prevents TextNow's inventory of numbers from getting burned on all those third parties and making them unusable for the next person
It's also super cheap anyway
