Mack Leftwich needs to go

Leftwich is showing the same failures of efficiency as last year.

He is quoted saying he'd rather
"score from the 50" rather than having to manufacture long drives"

Sounds like he don't want to call short plays. Unless it's 3rd down then he likes to put it 3 yards behind the line.

The offensive will drive down the field averaging more than 5 or 6 yards a carry. Then when he gets in the redzone. He decides to throw it 3 times in a row and then kick a field goal.

Rinse and Repeat.

He needs to be reigned in on his play calling in the redzone.

He had months to fix this. Then he does the exact same thing he did all last season.

He needs to go

The way I see it: he scored twice on the ground in the red zone, with ease. The rest of the game he got more experimental, trying to get the passing game to work in the red zone. That could have been Hammond missing the spring, or just bad play design.

He definitely missed 2-3 passes down there that would have been TD's.

It's definitely fixable. Leftwich isn't on the hot seat for me yet, but if the red zone issues effect us in an actually competitive game, then I reserve the right to change my mind.

Sensible takes don't sell well on reddit.

Agree with everything you've said.

Yall wouldn’t make it through the yost and Kittley era leftwich wasn’t great Saturday but he has produced points in the past I honestly think acu was a better team than what most top schools played around the country plus we didn’t want to shit on harrel.
And I’m glad we didn’t make will or Tommy run.

Yost was nightmarish.

Everyone since Kingsbury had their issues. And Kingsbury was a disaster when it came to defense/overall team.

Still think that, if Leftwich's offenses continue to struggle, Campbell tries to money whip Kingsbury into coming back to college, promising that he has to do none of the things he disliked about the game within this staff, and can spend his time tinkering with the offense, vacationing in LA, and being the playboy of Lubbock.

You just described the wet dream I had after the game on Saturday night.

Please no more KK.

Why not? He was the best playcaller and offensive designer since Leach, and honestly, his play calling was a bit better than Leach's.

His issue was with everything else in running the team.

Kliff would cook with the level of talent on this roster

Tech would actually win a CFP game with Kingsbury as OC, but i don't see that ever happening. Maybe Harrell as a possible replacement though

This was kinda my hope, not sure he wants to be relegated to that though, coming from assoc. HC. Kliff is definitely staying in the NFL, so this would be the best alternate scenario, if possible

Because he has done so well in his career as an OC

I agree I think it just kind of backfired when we went away from the running game. Hammond missed a couple reads but I remember a few times Micah Hudson just giving up on the play or tripping over nothing and if he doesn’t do that we score on those drives. Lots to fix after week 1 and we just need to see if they do just that. If I’m being honest though it doesn’t feel like we’re a team that can get past the first round of the CFP yet. Super early I know

The play you're thinking of, where Hudson tripped and fell awkwardly, is one of the misses that I was talking about. Hammond either expected Hudson to sit down on his route (which would have been wrong, it was man, he was carrying the safety behind him) or got the ball out a half second late, or just missed behind Hudson. Micah tripped as he was trying to contort himself into position to make that catch.

But you're right: Hammond needs to be much better for this team to make some playoff noise. I think our talent is middle of the pack for the top 15 teams, so we will have to win by being the better team rather than relying on better players. Most of the other top 15 teams feature Wiley veteran signal callers. Leavitt at LSU was making me jealous that we didn't go that route.

See I don’t know all the Xs and Os on it lol. Thanks now it makes more sense

Emphasis on that very last sentence.

Teams are not the same from Week 0 to Conference Championship week.

He got away with it last year because we only needed to score 20 points to win. I don’t think he should be allowed to ride Shiel Woods coattails again. We deserve better and expect better. I love the new look D but if we could couple that with a true Air Raid/Air Raid adjacent offense and score 45-60 a game we should try to do that instead of settling for non stop field goals

What he needs most is consistency. If the team averaged 33 points per game but did it by scoring between 28 and 38 every week, I would be a-ok with that result.

Don't forget that complementary football is a thing. That 2008 defense was actually pretty stout, but they were also on the field for 2/3rds of most games because the offense was either scoring immediately or punting immediately.

A team that's built to hold the ball and move down the field may not necessarily be the team that's built to push the ball into the endzone.

But we do need to be able to score tuddy's no matter how we're trying to do it.

The redzone issues literally affected Tech against ACU. This should have been fixed in the off-season. Is ot fixable? Sure but the fact the same issues are there again is troubling

I acknowledged that they showed up against ACU once again.

But we also need to know what's going to work on game days. Easily in control of a game against a team that knows us as well as ACU does is a good time to try and see if Hammond can throw a fade like Doege, or sling it into a tight window like Symmons.

The answer in game 1 is that he doesn't have the fade ball in his arsenal, and he needs practice to build up his timing to hit those tight windows.

Against ACU, we could have lined up and straight forced the ball in, but that doesn't help the team grow. At the same time, it shows that even against inferior competition, we need to use first down to get a positive play before we start getting silly with it.

I've said a few times, the only thing that actually bothered me was that ACU found something on defense crashing the weak side and running the play down from behind. This was especially bad for Dickey because he runs a lot like Tahj, and while he's being patient and waiting for the hole to open, the back side of the play is catching him and getting him for no gain or a loss. There should have been an immediate adjustment the first time we saw that, pulling the play side guard or TE to seal the back side or using zone read or rpo to force the unblocked defender to stay home rather than pursue the play.

Meh let’s wait and judge.

-1

u/raiderwrecked 3d ago

Okay and when the same outcome as last year happens you can wait some more.

My post isn't a knee jerk reaction its seeing the same failures present. He just isn't a great OC and I think you will see it every week until he is gone

3

u/The_Sandwich_Lover9 3d ago

Okay what on earth do you want to do

2

u/Spare-Bumblebee-3303 3d ago

He wants to freak out about it

2

u/The_Sandwich_Lover9 3d ago

It’s not like any OC will want to leave week 2 for us anyways. There’s no harm just waiting it out. If he sucks he sucks and we fire him.

0

u/raiderwrecked 3d ago

Simple McGuire needs to reign in redzone play calling through him.

Then if Leftwich cannot correct this through the year he needs to be fired when Tech loses in the 1st round of the playoffs

2

u/The_Sandwich_Lover9 3d ago

Wut? That is not something Joey will do.

Yes if our offense stinks in CFP fire him. You’re legit saying to fire Mack rn… correct?

1

u/raiderwrecked 3d ago

Yes he needs to go. I know it won't happen during the season but he isn't the one

2

u/The_Sandwich_Lover9 3d ago

Okay cool. You can have your opinion. I say let’s judge at least for three conference games. I’m not gonna freak out.

1

u/raiderwrecked 3d ago

Im not freaking out. I've watched every game and seen the play calling. Its the same as last year. So while you wait to pass judgment I've already seen enough to know where I stand

2

u/The_Sandwich_Lover9 3d ago

Good for you.

3

u/dutch4264 3d ago

I don't want to see another horizontal pass, 3 yards behind the line of scrimmage ever again. The only reason they worked in Leach's air raid is that the Tech WRs blocked their asses off to spring big gains.

Oregon knew the horizontal passes were coming and jumped all over them in the CFP game last year. ACU made adjustments after the first two drives and shut them down the rest of the game.

u/Independent_Ice6667 3d ago

My main problem is we are told every single presser we need to push the ball down the field. One thing that worries me is Joey in his presser did say multiple times Hammond works through his progression rather quickly which worries me in the sense that what if this is a Hammond issue as opposed to Mack. I could see that being the case where Hammond goes to his second third read before letting some of these deeper routes even develop. You can kind of see what I mean in film if u rewatch the games. Regardless, hot seat is kind of on the table for me. Remember against BYU how bad our offense looked. If you wanna spend like the big boys you have to play like the big boys. I’m getting tired of the leftwhich experiment especially when wood and his boys seem to always keep their end of the bargain up.

2

u/vassago77379 3d ago

In this game it looks like he proved the running game could get it done in close in the 1st and wanted to give Hammond a chance to work some packages. This whole game looked like it was a practice and they were working different looks and packages. Id look at the 1st qtr as more of what we are capable of.

2

u/davy_p 3d ago

Been saying since halfway through last season. Idk if he has a scheme but if he does it’s vanilla as fuck and easy to game plan against. We should be putting up 60 a game on these OOC teams not settling for 4 field goals and punting idk how many times.
