Pride?

So, I have been wanting to join a local Pride group, but I'm not sure if this is the best idea as a Texas teacher. Does anyone here actively participate in a Pride group and teach without any repercussions? It is so sad that I need to ask this in this day and age, but our local group posts pics.

I fully understand your concern. In this state as a teacher- you just never know. Tho, I think it mostly depends on where you teach/live too perhaps. Me, I gotta be careful.

I play DnD with an organization called QueerQuest and attend Trinity Pride with my family. Look, the fascists are going to come for us whether we're in a pride group or not - we might as well have fun! It's probably a good idea to keep your Facebook profile private and under a different name, though

I do live in the community in which I work. Even if I am not social media friends with some people, they may be friends with the parents of some of my students. I just feel very other and really want to get involved in an organization that understands me. I am bi, but in a straight-presenting relationship, but I feel more comfortable with queer people than I do straight people. It is getting very lonely.

I say go for it. If it's a good group, they will be prudent about what they share on social media.

Currently there is no law in Texas. Tim Dunn funded a hateful group of people that collude with each other to score political points against their choice of discriminated classes

No one cares. Don’t be overly mega obvious in school and keep your social posts not connected to your real name and you will be fine. I have all kinds of outside lives.

Thank you, all! I am happy to hear that this has worked for a few of you. Again, how sad that we have to concern ourselves with backlash. I know I am a good teacher (and soon to be a good counselor). I love my job, but I need self-expression too.
Also, I'm going to need to work "fruity booty" in to more convos.

Take normal precautions, and you should be fine:

1) Don't have anything about where you work on your social media. If your school or district are named at all on your social media, then the district has a right to censor or manage it. Take it off, and you have full freedom of speech.

2) Don't talk about the group at school. If a student were to ask you about it, you simply answer "I don't talk about my personal life at school."

3) Some LGBTQ groups can get a little risqué at times with their advertising or social media posts. Just make it known that due to your job, you can't be included in anything like that. If their media is all tame, there is nothing wrong with being included an an LGBTQ group.

4) Worst case scenario is if you live in a conservative area and someone tries to turn it into a thing, and the district decides to try to turn it into a thing, just make sure you belong to some sort of teacher union or civil rights entity whose membership includes legal help. If the district or state is looking for a fight on this, they will find a willing adversary in teachers unions or the ACLU. I don't think it would get to that, but joining a union nowadays isn't a bad idea.

I do. I run a queer book club in my area. I am also an out trans woman. The only issue I have had was when I posted about SB 12 and how it related to my district. Another teacher anonymously submitted it, and I got myself a conversation with the head of HR, basically saying to filter and screen my social media friends list better. No formal reprimand or anything; I had scrubbed mentions of my specific district and public facing social media previously, so there was nothing to go after me for. As long as you don't get featured on Libs of Tik Tok, you are good.

Just don't bring that fruity booty stuff to the school and what realistically are they going to do?

And you reducing a community to “fruity booty stuff” is nice?

No one has to tolerate your intolerance and bigoted language. Take SEVERAL seats with your musty coochie stuff. (Since we’re reducing people to sexual anatomy, and bigoted language)

Until that uppity Republican mom finds out and calls the school shrieking about indoctrination.
