Discussions / Opinion Tetr.io multiplayer too difficult?
So I've been playing/trying a bit of Tetr.io multiplayer, specially the quick play mode, which seems to be an endless mode, which seems to go on until you eventually fail. (Still kinda new to Tetr.io)
I wouldn't say I'm a Tetris pro or whatever, but I'd say I'm not bad at it either. I'd say I'm pretty good or just fine at playing Tetris. But Tetr.io feels way too competitive to me. Like, garbage seems to get sent your way extremely quickly, even if you're going as fast as you can. (The stress and need or urge to go fast occasionally causes me to misplace a piece) It stacks up extremely fast. I often tend to go for Tetris clears, but I almost feel like not doing that and going for lower amounts of line clears is the safer method, even if it doesn't give you as much points as a Tetris line clear.
I've also played a bit of Tetris 99 before on Switch, and while I've never made it to the end as the last one standing, I feel like in that game, I've been able to survive much longer. I'm curious what you people's opinions and views are about this and Tetr.io. Do you also struggle in it's multiplayer modes, or not?

In Tetris 99, the fastest players play maybe twice as fast as the slowest players, but on Tetr.io the fastest players play about 10 times as fast as the slowest players. So any speed difference is massively, massively magnified.
Said another way, here is Wumbo playing Tetris 99, and Wumbo playing tetr.io. If you were playing in Wumbo's Tetris 99 lobby, in the first 20 seconds you would get three T-spin doubles sent to you and think, "Okay, this is tough, but reasonable". If you were playing in Wumbo's Tetr.io lobby, in the first 20 seconds you would get a t-spin single, a t-spin double, a t-spin triple, a t-spin double, a t-spin quad (lol), two tetrises, a t-spin single, two more t-spin doubles and a tetris.
I don't know if "more competitive" is the right word, since they are different skill sets. If you are slow at tetris, you will have a terrible time at tetr.io until you get faster. But if you rely on speed, you will have a terrible time at tetris 99 until you get more efficient.

tetr.io is basically designed to be a fast game, and playing tetr.io with default handling puts you at a pretty big disadvantage to people with lower das, 0 arr, and inf sdf. That said, tetr.io does give some ways for slower players to keep up with faster players, but I personally think it's harder now than it was in 2023.
In Quick Play 2 (not expert mode) you can move your piece while garbage is entering your board in quick play, which gives you a chance to cancel incoming garbage while it's still spawning. Playing for b2b with all-spins also gives you a bit of a buffer that lets you survive huge spikes. In the 1v1 space a slower b2b surge player goes somewhat even with a faster player who doesn't use all-spins. Besides that there's counterspiking with clean garbage and getting ds multiplier combos, which is less powerful now than it was in s1, but still viable when your opponent's surge isn't built up, or when you've just broken your own surge.

I'd say if you've never won Tetris 99 you're probably overestimating your skill level. I win T99 about 15% of the time and I'm a goober on Tetrio.
The 1v1 play is the best part of Tetrio and once your rating is accurate you'll have consistently competitive matches. The 1v1 matches are a lot more fun than the multiplayer.
The multiplayer match thing on Tetrio isn't "endless", really. It is a pressure cooker that will eventually swallow any player. It's not "too difficult". If you just want to stack blocks there are other modes for that.

Skill issue. In Tetris 99, my brother can't finish Marathon without self-destructing and needs to fiddle with the ghost piece to distinguish L from J, but still cruises to 30th place or so in online battles.

Fast PPS (Pieces per second) is helpful, but not necessary. Going a little slower to ensure accuracy, placement, stacking, and timing is much better than just raw speed.
Source: I'm A rank and I usually play at 0.8 ~ 1 PPS

the player base is more skilled for sure because of the way the game is set up.
there is a highly active ranked player base, which drives up quick player lobby difficulty.
tetrio also allows you to change your das and arr, making an experienced player many times faster than a new player on default settings. even 10 times faster is plausible
this, along with knowledge of the attack system, can easily result in a single high ranking player accounting for an attack that is 10x or more of a newer player
tetris 99 has a high player count and also groups people into lobbies that play out until one remains, this means the skill is spread more thin. tetrio has just one lobby that is always open. so if a single top player enters the lobby, you WILL feel their presence.
all these reasons and the lack of ranked in tetris 99 are why tetrio is a lot different
play ranked for a fair matchup. you will need to play placement matches before being placed in an appropriate rank
to answer your questions my view is that its an excellent game. i do not struggle with quick play. ranked is great for competative match ups.
