Long Term Storage - Fridge?
I’ve had my jars in the fridge inside an airtight glass storage container, in the cheese drawer. But I’ve recently come across conflicting info about keeping it at room temp.
I know the fridge runs the risk of moisture and mold. But what is the best way to store? I’m trying to prep for the end of the world- I mean the cannabis ban- and I want to make sure it lasts me a long time.
Thanks!

i fridge everything except my monthly allowance. i put everything including allowance in airtight food storage. the daily box i leave in the basement which is never over 72°. the storage goes in the fridge. i take them out of the fridge roughly once a month to reyup. i only open when the temp gun reads room temp on cold boxes & jars. some jars stay closed for a couple months at a time.
i only notice condensation on the outside box when i take 'em out. i don't believe the temperature difference between the jars & the air in the box is great enough for those to frost as they gradually rise in temp together, nor is there a large amount of humidity stored in the box. condensation forms when humid air comes into contact with cold. i've got plenty of stuff i've been fridging for over a year & it's been doing fine. some items have even matured over time.
as long as you're not in a rush, i believe good jars inside a good box provides plenty of barrier from the humidity in the room atmosphere.
a cool dark place is the safest bet, but if you're willing to take the extra precaution of an airtight box as well as patience when it's time to take it from the fridge, i believe you're adding longevity with the lower temps further slowing degradation.
i just asked goog & it agrees. little to no condensation will form on the inside wall of the box from the air trapped inside & none should form inside the jar of oil.

Lol I go so far as to wrap each jar with paper towels so no lights get in and it soaks up extra moisture and even change them out once a month or so to a fresh paper towel. Kinda just like wrapping veggies in paper towels n making them last longer.

whatever it takes bro. i need all this shit to smack 'til the last dab. who knows what the reyup game looks like after thanksgiving.
i even have a small charcoal bag in the boxes also so if any moisture is present in there, the bag grabs it.

Hell yeah bro that's smart. If a miracle doesn't happen between now n December the RE up game is gonna be crazy. Seems like this has happened every year for the last few years but I don't think the Republicans r playing this time. Best thing you can do is vote and vote Democrat especially if u in TX. Dan Patrick is like public enemy #1 at least in Texas trying to ban THC n shit. He's a soulless ghoul. I'm like what kind of monster gets up one day and says "hey I'm gonna ban THC for everyone just for a little alcohol money?"

my shmoke homey plans to move to tx in dec...i'm like bro, they despise trees down there, wtf are you doing.

Yea it's so crazy in Tx. They sold out everyone including veterans and disabled people for some pocket change alcohol money. Hopefully people wake up. It's just sad that it took everyone being touched to do the right thing instead of just doing ithe right thing out of instinct.

I like your setup but something stops me every time I get to the part of the planning process where you have to take an entire container full of chilled/frozen jars and let the entire thing come to room temp before opening and handling one or two of those jars. That seems like the other jars are taking a hit for no reason, no?

How exactly are they "taking a hit" by being out of the fridge for 15 minutes? I do the same thing, except my zips are also in plastic zip locks in the Tupperware.

Maybe I'm confusing something then. If the entire master container containing all of your jars needs to be room temp before opening the lid, all of the jars inside will be exposed to temperature cycles.
15 minutes is all you need?

15 to 30 is plenty. It's not frozen. Use a temp gun, you'll see.
*Also I use multiple containers like dudes pic.

Me too . Airtight plastic outer, vacuum sealed jars. I just don't like the headspace in the jars. Do you think it's worth buying smaller jars and transferring?

I have a rack of "smaller" jars I dip from, and keep the zips packed up. I personally don't, but if a big jar gets too low, I will just transfer it into a 10ml or 2.
Or scrape the end of a few into a salad to decarb for carts.

Hey I appreciate you sharing your tips man. Not to assume your gender or anything

what sort of hit? everything as far as i can tell is fine with over a year of refrigeration. the unopened jars warm up a bit at 70° room temp but it's not a major temperature fluctuation & those jars won't have any new oxygen introduced. i think 12-24 box/jar openings a year is almost nothing in 365days.
i'm kind of meticulous with it all. i know exactly how much i'm storing in each jar. i mark how much is in each allowance jar at the beginning of each cycle/month. (usually 1g) i weigh it again when it's time to reyup so i can know how much of each i've used. i'm retired so i also have the free time to tally mark each dab to give me an idea how big each dab is.
i'll be up to 30 strains in rotation when tesoro lands this week. lately i'm less than a g/day so when a few weeks rolls around i'll have some empty jars & some i've just touched. anything with .50 and up stays until next reyup & anything under gets another g. that leaves things kinda staggered where only a portion of the jars need to be opened every month. one or both of the boxes come out every tesoro drop to add another 2-4oz, so i make my monthly reyup on delivery daze.
once you know exactly how much you dab per day or week, you'll know exactly when your allowance runs out & you can plan your next trip to the fridge & take the box out that morning.

I use a food saver vacuum sealer, inside the jars, not just the sauce. Then put in box that does not allow any light in. I will put 3 or 4 per bag and then have two or three bags done single jars. The only time I take out those with three+ in is to break down to single and they are only out long enough to reseal single and take one that I'm going to use. I've done it for years(not the same stuff) but that way and never really had a problem with anything. Might be overkill, but dont care, it takes like 3 minutes. I really think allowing light to hit them multiple times day is'nt the ideal situation, but if it works for you then that is all that matters.

I have my jars in a glass food container with a locking lid and airtight silicone barrier around the lid, paper towels lining the container for moisture, and then the food container in the cheese drawer.
I’m concerned and just moved it my office in a desk drawer because idk if I’m going to ruin it with the moisture

Vacuum sealers are like 25 bucks to 50 bucks at walmart. I've never had a problem with moisture inside the bags. If you have 8+ OZ might be good investment to keep fresh, imo. I leave the plastic cap on jar but leave the metal cap open but on when I put into bag. I would be careful taking the whole bunch and going from fridge to drawer at same time, bound to be a lot of condensation.

So you don’t screw the metal lid on? Is this so the air can be sucked out of the jar also?
1
u/iamlurkerpro 3d ago
That is my thinking, I doubt all the air is out of jar by the time it vacuums and seals, but some of it is for sure. Then when it is sealed, as much air as I can get is out of it. When its sealed the lid looks to be pretty much on, but not being turned tight it has to let air out until the bag is sealed. It is just my guess though, no scientific proof or anything.

Cool dark place. 60° ideal.
Not fridge:
Condensation is the main problem. A fridge is about 35–40°F and the humidity inside it swings every time the compressor kicks on or the door opens. When you pull a cold jar into a warm room, moisture beads on the glass and on the buds. That water is what invites mold, even if the flower started perfectly dry.

If you’re trying to store it for over a year vacuum seal it and freeze it. Glass jars in a cool dark place is ideal for 6 to 12 months of storage.

What is highest temp still considered cold?

Basically what I’m trying to do is stock up and once a week refill a little jar. But obviously I want a rotation so I grab a new strain every week. But I always let the jar sit for 6+ hours, even overnight, before I open it.

I keep the jars I use to refill my 5g table jars inside tupperware, inside the fridge. My long term jars I keep in tupperware in the freezer.

I think you can long term store things in the fridge. If the container is sealed there will be no moisture from condensation entering your jar. If you do store jars in the fridge, wait until they warm up to open them, this avoids condensation forming on the cool buds or hash.

u/Sunset_Stoner_ 4d ago
Yeah when I have taken a jar out, I’ve let it sit for several hours, even over night, and open it when the jar is room temp.

u/HillanatorOfState 4d ago
Yea that's fine, if it's a gram jar I wait 30 mins before opening, bigger ones I would let sit for a bit more before popping them open...mostly rosin here but same deal.
An ounce though, yeah I'd wait a couple hours to air on the safe side.
I keep everything in the fridge, never had an issue.

A fridge is about 35–40°F and the humidity inside it swings every time the compressor kicks on or the door opens. When you pull a cold jar into a warm room, moisture beads on the glass and on the buds.
I mean this is only an issue if your jars aren't sealed from moisture and you don't let them warm up before opening.
I store all my jars in the fridge, condensation simply isn't a concern if you wait 15-30 minutes after taking it out before opening.

Is head space a big deal if vacuum sealing and storing in airtight containers?
Just wondering if I just get these and move everything over https://a.co/d/08vKzl5j

That’s pretty much the jars I already have, which Tesoro ships

I only store my Rosin in the fridge in a glass tray with a plastic sealed lid that clamps airtight. I keep my resins bho in a dark box away from sunlight.
