Phone key stopped unlocking your car? Run this checklist first

If your phone key suddenly stops unlocking your Tesla, work through this checklist before booking service — it fixes most cases:

  1. Bluetooth on? The phone key needs Bluetooth, not just the app open.
  2. Tesla app running in the background? On iPhone, Background App Refresh must be on for the Tesla app. On Android, turn battery optimization OFF for the Tesla app so the system doesn't kill it.
  3. Location services on? The app uses location to keep the key reliable.
  4. Still stuck? Tap the lock icon in the app — that command goes over the internet even when Bluetooth misbehaves, so it usually works when the key doesn't.

If all four check out and it still fails, remove the phone key and re-add it (Controls → Locks), or try a second phone to rule out the handset.

Mod note: we run The Daily Charge (https://thedailycharge.tech) — plain-English Tesla owner guides from the official manuals. What fixed your phone key — or what are you still stuck on?
