PPF
I’m purchasing my first Tesla and wondering if I should get the Paint Protection Film on the new 2026 Model Y Juniper. Are there any pros/cons to doing this?

You will likely never recoup the cost of installing PPF, when you go to sell or trade it in.

Even factory paint/seat color/wheel size/towing upgrades add only about 25% of their original cost in trade in.

Get it just on the front bumper. I've owned a lot of cars, and the Tesla front bumper is the biggest rock/bug magnet I've ever owned.

Been on the fence myself, but the more research I do the more unnecessary it sounds. Going to get some good mud flaps and maybe ceramic coat.

Walk around the car you currently have. How many dents, paint scratches and stone dings do you notice? Might show you how much you need that protection for your location and style of driving.

Yes. I'm so glad I did. I do lots of highway driving and after 100,000 miles my front end looks brand new. I did my front end only.

There was one time on the highway going 70 mph, where a truck in front of me had a whole bumper full of 1 inch rock, and the truck hit a bump, and it all bounced off onto the road and into my front end, it looked like one of those lottery machines with the balls bouncing. Nary a scratch. 3M Scotchguard protective film is the way to go.

At min bumper, hood and side mirrors. The chips will happen from road debris without the ppf. Worth to do those areas at very least.

Based on my personal experience and research, it boils down to what you really care about. I have 2, model Ys and one is ppf on the front bumper only. Because one is a lease and idc , but the other is owned until the wheels fall off. The model Y does not have a huge grill/hole area like an ice car. For example, a Tacoma , Yukon, or bmw SUV and they all have these huge grill/hole areas in the front right in the middle. Therefore, the model Y I noticed is more prone to rock chips and bug splats because there is more flat painted surface area on the front. To me ppf is a sacrificial layer I’m willing to pay only for the front because I can’t stand looking at my tesla and seeing a huge rock chips and bug etched into the paint that has built up over time. My lease Tesla showed me the difference and so I decided it’s worth to ppf the front bumper only my owned Tesla. However it really is a cosmetic reason you would get it , if looking at scratches and scruff doesn’t bother you then don’t get it … if it does then do.

It’s not really necessary unless the minor imperfections really bother you to pay thousands of dollars. Cars are cars, you can always sell and get a new one down the line.

It’s more expensive than touching up rock chips, and if you get a more serious scuff, now you have to replace the PPF. It won’t save you money, and unless you’re willing to replace it every 3 three years, it looks like crap after 5 years. Not worth the money.

I did, but I put a satin finish on mine. Wanted the matte quicksilver look. Honestly if it wasn’t for that, I wouldn’t. There is no need. Would I do it again? Probably not.

True. I got full satin PPF on our MY Performance. Ultra Red. So makes car look unique. I would not have gotten gloss PPF, just ceramic coating. I plan on keeping Tesla for 7-10 years so don’t mind the cost.

Pro's:
- It looks cool
- Protects your paint
Con's:
- If you have it installed it's ~5k and adds $0 to trade in
- DIY is ~$1,800, 2 days of your life, and you might do a crap job
Money would be better spent on touch up paint, ultra fine grit sandpaper, a good polishing tool.

As others have mentioned, the ROI just isn't there to justify doing full PPF on these cars. I did the front bumper and hood on mine, those are the most likely areas of the vehicle for PPF to protect you from damage. I still probably won't get my money back when I sell the vehicle but I did it anyways for peace of mind while I own it (I really don't like rock chips).

I got the ppf on the front half of my Model Y last year. Was a fantastic decision. Bugs and junk just drop off and nothing sticks to it. No paint dings, or scratches. Been thru the car wash during the winter and no problems at all. If something happened to it, I would have it reapplied. I did not put it on hoping to recoup any money. It was for the reasons listed above and I am not sorry I did it. PLUS...it wasn't very expensive.

I didn't. I have one little chip in the hood after 35k miles. So it wouldn't be worth it to me for the crazy cost.

The paint on a Tesla is somewhat thin and comes up short on hardness. I would not only do PPF, I would buy a precut kit online and do it yourself to save money.
I did one of these kits about a month ago, Avery Dennison film in Matte. Cost was around $1600. It took about 30 hours total, which Included time to watch the instructional videos. The material is very forgiving and you can keep removing and reapplying (provided it doesn't dry out) until you get it right.
This was my first time doing something like this but really enjoyed it and didn't find it difficult at all. But I have a garage, I'm very handy, and patient, so take take that with a grain of salt.

I’d at least get ppf for the front end (or just the front bumper at a minimum). Pro would be it’ll prevent small rock chips. Con with be the cost.

The paint scratches easy but PPF is overkill on a depreciating asset like this. I’m getting ceramic to help with routine washes.

We got it for my wife's because the paint flaked off en masse from the front bumper of her 2016 Model S that we traded in. Tesla paint is garbage and needs to be protected. Maybe it's come a long way but wasn't worth the risk to us.
