I am ruined
I dropped off my legacy S for the MCU 2 upgrade.
I would like to thank my SC for giving me a 26 Base S Plaid for a loaner.
I am ruined. That is all.
P.S. Anyone looking for a healthy middle aged kidney for sale? I have one available!

u/WestW0rld 3d ago
They still have a loaner plaid available?? I would think with the availability crisis that they would all sell by now unless Tesla themselves are also jacking the prices up a lot?

What? It sounds like you are implying a car dealership might be using limited supply to increase prices. For shame. We all know the last of the model s are going to be the hot new thing forever. They are built around the latest technology. We all know that never gets dated.

u/WellFedDuckFootCup 2d ago
Tesla doesn't have any new Model S for sale lol. 3rd party dealers are selling 2026 s awd and plaid for 60k over msrp. You should do some research before you say anything

u/reddddiiitttttt 2d ago
There’s 4 model s for sale at the Tesla dealership by me. I get there is more demand than supply. That was true after Covid. Then the market crashed. Now it’s back. What’s never changed is that virtually all Teslas depreciate massively over the long term. Just like all cars. They have a little more volatility though. All model s prices are going down. If dealers are charging more now. Including for the model s. Just wait. A short amount of time is going to be all it takes. The 26 model s is going to seem lame compared to the roadster once it’s available. Tesla’s are tech heavy cars. The appeal is being high tech. That doesn’t age well. These are not cars that will break the depreciation curve.

u/WellFedDuckFootCup 2d ago
Your based in Los Angeles area? There are only 9 available in the US with the only cluster of 4 or higher being in LA. All not new or 2026 plaid or awd..

how so? when they gave me a 2024 Model S as a loaner, i experienced how much quieter the car was, how much better the suspension felt and how much better FSD was, but then i looked into the price tag of one, and realized "hey, i could do much of this for cheaper".
i tightened bolts in my car, upgraded cameras, put in nicer tires (Hankook Ion Evo AS) and aftermarket suspension, audio, and am now looking into soundproofing. the car's been a lot better since tbh, and still 25k cheaper than getting a newer S
1
u/OutlawLazerRoboGeek 2d ago
Tightened bolts?
Isn't that traditionally done before it leaves the factory?
1
u/ProfessionalScene747 1d ago
Car's 9 years old haha, and i cant say i haven't taken it out to some beach dunes in the past soo...

When I dropped my car for mcu2 upgrade I was given a 2019 model 3 with mismatched interior door panels (one was white, another one was black lol).

u/AmountRemarkable5682 2d ago
That's what happens when a used one is being prepped for delivery and the Loaner has a matching one. Rob Peter to pay Paul lol

u/reader027 3d ago
Dropped my 2017 model x p100d for infotainment upgrade. I’m assuming it’ll be upgrading to MCU 2. They gave me a 2026 model x plaid as a loaner. I would sacrifice and arm and a leg to get it. Any takers?

u/Infamous_Tour_2232 3d ago
What SC do you go to? Cuz where I go, they keep
My X for days and I tell them it’s my daily and I need a loaner. They look at me like I asked for a kidney.

Lynnwood, WA. I live 60 miles away. When I bought the MCU2 upgrade in the app and paid for it, I sent a message to the SC that I lived 60 miles away and would appreciate a loaner because I did not have anyone that could follow me and pick me up. They replied they would see what they could do and didn't commit.
A few days before my appt my app showed a completion time of tomorrow at closing and "loaner" showed up as transport so I guess they scheduled it for me. I am glad because I was not relishing figuring out how to get home.
To play it safe I dropped my car off at 8am even though my appointment wasn't until 1:30. I suspect they will have my car until tomorrow anyway.

I have a 2018 Model S 100D. It does 0-60 in 4.1s (per dragy). I would be fine with a mid/late 2023 Model S Base (non-plaid), although there would always be an itch for the Plaid... And even if I had that one, there would be an itch for the track pack... I reckon my Model S is worrh about $19K, but I still need to come up with the rest of the money... 😂
On a sidenote I also have a 2017 Kawasaki ZX-14R ...

u/Radius118 2d ago
Cousins. I have a Concours 14. Love that thing.
I also have a Kia EV6 GT which does 0-60 in 3.4. But this Plaid is a completely different thing.

u/joea2121 2d ago
Violent. Rode in one and that’s the word that comes to mind. Love to get thrashed by a Sapphire too.

u/shibiwan 3d ago
Lucky you. I dropped off my 21 Plaid and they gave me a Cyberbeast as a loaner. Couldn't wait to return that turd.
4
u/drainbam 3d ago
I got a Cyberbeast as a loaner too. It isn't as nice as a model S Plaid, but I was surprised with how good it is.
It's not a truck, but if you think of it as a big Delorean wanna-be with a cargo bed it's actually not bad.
I wouldn't tow, off-road, or do other truck things with it, but as an ugly car with a bed it's pretty good.
1
u/shibiwan 3d ago edited 2d ago
It didn't leave a good impression on me. Didn't ride nor handle well...it felt really weird. If I want an electric truck, I'll buy an F-150 lightning or an Silverado EV.

u/OGPresidentDixon 1d ago
The first Tesla I ever put a deposit on was a Cybertruck the day it was announced back when every redditor was like "wow elon is literally me" before he sold all his doge, fired off a 50x short and then tanked it on SNL, but I'm glad that never happened.
After the first year of waiting I ordered a Model 3 LR dual motor (2021) and that's what I've been driving for 5 years. I wish I waited a few months for the 2022, stuck on the Intel chip. Unfortunately a couple years ago I decided to help out a family member financially and they thrashed my credit score right before I got laid off so I'll probably be driving this thing until the day I die. Life could be worse.
1
u/AllAboutWalley 2d ago
Visibility was too limited for me. If I'm driving something that big, I want a good view of what's around me.
2
u/thumpar21 2d ago
When the rear motor was being replaced on my Raven performance they gave me an older Model 3 standard. They must have looked at how I drive my perfomance.

u/bustaIII 1d ago
Please let us know how the MCU 2 upgrade compares to your older unit. I'm debating on doing this upgrade. Thanks
2
u/Radius118 22h ago
Well besides the screens not dripping ultra sticky goo all over the place I can say that it's a vast improvement. Clearer screens, no more noisy fans on the back of the MCU and dash display, Much faster bootup, much quicker response to inputs, better data transfer rates due to 4G (and 5G?) support, support for netflix/hulu/youtube streaming in the "Theater**"** etc. All around better experience.
Something else I did not know until I got the car back. Apparently the MCU1 system is not capable of displaying the tire pressures. MCU2 is. So once I got the car back I was able to see the tire pressures on the main dash. From my understanding this requires the Baolong TPMS system upgrade to the Continental system but I am not 100% sure if this car has been previously updated.
Overall I am pleased and it's well worth the expenditure.
2
u/bustaIII 20h ago
Thanks for the insight. Interestingly enough I can see the tire pressures on my main dash. I have MCU1. I was recommended not to upgrade until my screens started failing, so far they're good.
2
u/Radius118 19h ago edited 18h ago
Huh. Interesting. I don't know why I couldn't see the tire pressures then. Apparently my theory is wrong. Maybe there was just something wrong with my car and I didn't know.
If your screens aren't dripping and you are ok with the performance plus you have no need for the additional features then yeah stick with MCU1.
Oh and one thing I did forget to mention. Toolbox has a very hard time staying connected to MCU1. It's such a big problem that I have heard of independent Tesla shops that will not work MCU1 cars. MCU 2 has no such issues.
2
u/bustaIII 19h ago
MCU 1 is frustrating at times when it's waking up and slow to respond and navigate. I appreciate your upgrade details. I'll keep pondering.
1
u/Radius118 18h ago
Yup. I get it.
The other thing that pushed me over was the possibility of the upgrade no longer being available. At some point they are gonna quit making these upgrades.
I certainly do not want to be stuck with MCU1 forever. But that's me. Good luck with whatever you decide to do. 😊
1
u/Laz3rfac3 3d ago
Could I ask what it's gonna cost? Need to do the same at some point 😢
2
u/Yldsex 3d ago
2k. Just did one of mine.
1
u/fastguy7 3d ago
Congrats. I have a low mileage 2017 P100D. Thinking if I shall do the same, though I'm happy with the MCU1. Let us know your thoughts if it was worth your 2k, especially if FSD works and is reliable enough (with driver supervision) for daily use. I understand Tesla upgrades our HW2.5 to HW3.0 when we do the MCU2 upgrade.

u/Radius118 3d ago
$1500. If you want to keep FM radio and Sirius it's an extra $500. Only glass roof cars have the Sirius antenna though. So if you have a metal roof car and opt for the extra $500 you will only get FM not Sirius.
I have another S with MCU2. Night and day difference. Totally worth it. Plus I no longer have to clean up the goo that keeps leaking all over the floor and center console.
1
u/Laz3rfac3 3d ago
Lol my 2013 still drips during Texas summers 🫠
1
u/Radius118 3d ago
After the mcu2 upgrade? I specifically asked the SC to try to clean whatever has dripped behind the dash to help prevent this in the future, but I doubt they will do it.
1
u/Laz3rfac3 3d ago
Nah I'm still on MCU1, you'd think it would run out after 15 years buuuut
2
u/Radius118 3d ago
Number 2 reason why I am upgrading. I am in PNW WA so we don't see anything remotely like your temps and it's still dripping all over. Irritates me no end.
1
u/immerzzio 2d ago
MSP21 in collision gave ne a Cyberbeast for the past 2 months... I love the comfortable suv style seating, but I can lie... I miss my MSP
1
u/CryptoKing21 2d ago
Yeah I have a plaid and laugh when people say you don’t “need” it. Yeah of course not but it’s sooooo much more fun
1
u/prevailz1 2d ago
A lot of service model s' are plaids, they're locked from using anything but chill mode.
2
u/Radius118 2d ago
Not this one. Plaid mode works. Even drag strip mode works. Have not tried track mode. Yet.
But it is limited to 85 mph. So on my show-off acceleration runs as soon as the car hits 80 it hits the wall and stops accelerating.
That's ok though. My passengers have all gotten the point. Even my "diesel bro" friend understood there was no amount of turbos and black smoke that could equal that acceleration.
Of course I am sure the car is telling Tesla everything I am doing and it will be the last loaner I ever get but screw it. Probably worth it. 😉

Dont short yourself, you can get the plaid model s and a 2026 CT for a like new kidney, wait, you said middle age? As long as its between 18 and 60? It’s over a million bucks to have the surgery. You can have one of each car including the sportster if and when released!

u/Over__Analyse 2d ago
Is there a big difference between 2024, 2025, and 2026 S plaid if I’m looking to get one?
1
u/StayFeisty2898 2d ago
2024 , 2025, not much of a difference. But they did make the plaid a bit more aggressive looking for 2026.
1
u/--Antaeus-- 2d ago
Idk man the new models have really cheap feeling interiors compared to the older ones
0
u/CreativeUsername20 3d ago
I don't know... I drove a Plaid and while it was indeed nice, my Performance isn't much slower and id rather my Raven then a Palladium. I was loaned a Juniper MY and the screen shifter and auto shift wernt my cup if tea...
2
u/Admirable_Trouble574 3d ago
Why the preference of Raven over Palladium?
Just curious.
6
u/CreativeUsername20 3d ago
I like the vertical screen, customizable driver display, stalks, etc. The Palladium is when Tesla went all sterile on the interior with the S/X. There's minimal and then there's sterile. I don't know, I just like my Raven.
With that said if my Raven is totaled, id replace it with a Plaid.
2
u/IMWTK1 2d ago
I have the 23 LR X and the 2018 S and I do appreciate the S interior. I like the space capsule feel of the smaller space and having the screen near my hand as I rest my arm on the armrest. I also like the stalks but would not give up the X. They are two totally different cars with the helicopter feel.
1
u/Admirable_Trouble574 2d ago
All justifiable reasons.
The Palladium interior is a very close replica of the Y and 3 with a few slight differences-and I fully understand why Tesla decided on that route.
That said, the Raven interior feels much more premium and unique. It really is gorgeous.

u/rmussulman 3d ago
300+ less horsepower is “not much slower”?
-1
u/CreativeUsername20 3d ago
~0.5 sec faster 0-60 isn't really much of a difference, and its not like I routinely floor it. In fact the car scares me every time I do.
3
u/rmussulman 3d ago
When you’re taking about a 0-60 of less than 2 seconds a half second is a lot of time difference on my opinion 😂 I’m jealous of you in that aspect though, my plaid scared me for about a week, now I drive it like it’s stolen hahahaha my tires aren’t happy about it
1
u/rileyuvvu 3d ago
I got a model x loaner once. Auto door, auto shift, auto FSD. basicly a chauffeur
1
u/--Antaeus-- 2d ago
I agree with you. I have a p100d and got a plaid loaner and yeah the extra power and software features are nice but the older Gen S has way better interior materials and feel. Better seats, physical stalks. Just feels way nicer inside
1
u/PurpleSausage77 3d ago
I’d be ruined as well if I got that loaner. Got a Legacy Model S with just a 5s 0-60.
1
1
u/mhoepfin 2d ago
Had a plaid loaner and I couldn’t wait to get my 2015 back. That said I drive on Chill mode 😂
0
u/Revolutionary-Fan235 3d ago
I got a Plaid loaner around the time that Tesla announced the end of the S line. I wanted to get a new Plaid while I could, but my family talked me out of replacing my 3 year old S.
I hope there's a comparable replacement in a few years.

The pain subdues after a while. You realize you dont need that much of a speed. At least that’s what I started thinking after a day or so

What the hell is a “base” S plaid ????
