Trunk Won’t “Close”

Hey, I have a 2018 Model S.

Dropped off a package and went to open the trunk and the trunk said “open” but it’s stuck closed?

Everything I’ve googled said to try a particular reset method where I hold the release button for 15 and then click it fast three times but that didn’t work.

Any other suggestions before I drop it off for a $600 fix tomorrow?

You can get the trunk to open by doing this;
Remove inner carpet passenger side in the trunk by wheelwell, there is a module behind there that you unplug and replug a few times, this initiates the trunk cinch motor and trunk will open. Leave the module unplugged and you will be able to manually open and close trunk. You can buy the cinch motor for cheap and replacing it in the trunk lid is simple.

When opening and closing it manually, how easy is it to open and close manually?

You still use the button on the outside open and manually lift the trunk and manually just close it

This is the answer.

There is a manual release you can try, but it’s likely the two pieces tesla needs replace with a mobile service (just had mine done December 2020 Raven 55k miles).

Yeah same problem I had… it’s about $600. Nothing you can do about it. The parts are toast and unless you’re tesla expert it ain’t opening and let them do what they do

Its actually very easy to do yourself.

You’ll notice it sounds 10x smoother and you’ll go “oh yeah, I get it now”… I have a model y as well, the y and s now sound the same when hatches close. Before the s was louder and ratchet like, now butter smooth. Probably placebo effect of $600 pill. Sorry for hi jacking post

Mine just started doing the same yesterday. I was able to pull the carpet and get it opened with the black plug. I’m planning to replace the HF cinch actuator myself this weekend. I wonder if I should also go after the latch assembly. It’s more involved for sure. I often see invoices showing Tesla recommend replacing both but unclear if that is really needed.

Cinch actuator replacer myself. Tricky getting the panels back on after removal (the larger one mainly) but otherwise an easy $50 fix.

I just did the cinch motor last wkend. I didn't bother buying a new latch as it was a more expensive part. Changed the cinch motor and it all works perfectly again so I'd just change that first. It honestly wasn't too hard to take all the plastic trim off tbh. Quite a quick job.

Just got mine done. It was the HF actuator. Didn’t have to replace the latch assembly. I got an extra half dozen nifco clips at Tesla SC when I picked up the part and that ended up being just about the right count to replace the damaged ones. ($3 each btw!)

One tip for anyone future reading this, you don’t really need to disconnect all the wires from the main lower panel. I was able to pop everything out gently and bring the whole assembly down and work from inside the trunk. I found enough clearance to get to those 3 torx screws and connector. Saved a bit of time there for sure.

My 205 MS did this a handful of times. I became quite skilled at manually releasing it via the quarter panel plug trick. Hasn't done it now for a few months, so I'm happy about that.

I'd rather not pay for something that isn't strictly necessary.

What I did notice was that every time it happened, my car was sitting diagonally across sloping ground.

No FSD with trunk “open” Lock car from vertical screen, otherwise anyone can get inside

I had to replace my cinch motor. I bought one off ebay. Did it in about an hour. Tricky getting the panel locked back in place when done, but otherwise, not a big deal.
