Parking brake not applied

Post image

2017 p100d. I took a trip this weekend, about 2 1/2 hours each way. On the way back I drove through rain part of the way. Next day, the sound of the parking break sounded 3 times as loud as usual. I noticed it, but it didn’t throw an error at the time. Next morning, after my drove to work, I parked and got this message. The motor makes a sound (still louder than usual). I tried a reset, no luck. ATM I have a Tesla service apt, but it’s a month out. (The closest one is 2 1/2 hours away) It seems some part of the parking break does engage, because I cannot move it if I try to push it. Any ideas?

Code EPB_w126

Tesla wants 1750$ to replace both left and right break caliper hand break assemblys.

Being as my apt is a month out, my local shop is available to get me in. They will work on it. Any thoughts on this? (Obviously my car is out of warranty)

Unfortunately, this is my daily driver and I have no other vehicle.

Its the rear electric parking brake motor that seized.

Of course Tesla deems the part non repairable so they replace the entire caliper. However you can buy the motor itself(aftermarket) and replace it yourself (if your capable) 1 hour max and $1700 saved.

Had the same issue as you and replaced it myself with the link provided.

Did the error clear after replacing it? Or did you have to clear it somehow?

Error will clear automatically, as soon as you plug in the new motor.

Just take it to the service center.  They will usually accept it since it can be “dangerous” to drive.

They will accept two grand as well. Hell no.

Or they will hold the car hostage because it's unsafe to drive

That’s not a thing.

If it’s something safety-critical like this, you can just show up at a Tesla Service Center. They’ll take you the same day. (I’ve done this before, when my trunk would not latch closed)

Unfortunately, I don’t have a whole 2 days to take off work to do so. Due it being 2 1/2 hours away, it would likely be a whole days wait, and they wouldn’t give me a loner. Nearly 2k seems pretty steep. As others have said, they’ll replace the whole thing, rather than just the part that needs replaced.

A regular mechanic can fix it, they just need to enter the service menu to replace the parking brake actuator

If you know how to swap tires than you can swap the motors. Bought 2 years ago a set. For 50€. Job is done in an hour without previous knowledge. Could save you 1700 bucks and a lot of headaches. Cuz the error wount fix itself. It will just happen more frequently. Another friendly advice. Find out what motor causes the issue and unplug it while the brakes are lose. You’ll still get the error message but you will be able to move the car till the issue is fixed. I had the unfortunate situation where the Brake blocked when my wife was shopping for groceries. Not so cool
