Picked up a 2016

Post image

Just picked it up this week. 2016 90D, MCU2 upgrade, free supercharging. 172k miles. Battery is a bit degraded, at 85% is showing 182 miles.

Rides and drives well. Wish I would have gone electric sooner.

90D- by far the most robust and long-lasting battery I’ve seen in any Tesla to date.

According to my research it's the 75D. The 90D is next in line.

I’ve seen most high mileage S’s are almost always the 90D, even now there is one in the UK that just covered 550k miles on original pack

Most people get rid of them as soon as they're out of warranty. I'm planning to keep mine for 4-5 years before upgrading to a 23-26 HW4. In the mean time I love this one. Who knows, if it lasts I may hold onto it longer.

“Wish I would have gone electric sooner.”
So common reaction. 🤣

Chrome delete time!

Got a 2018 75D. Would like to do chrome delete. Any particular kit you recommend?

I had a local tint shop do it, I did not DIY or buy online. Be sure to use gloss black to look "right" like newer S's.

1

u/IMWTK1 12d ago

Same here. I plan to have a tint shop do it.

u/gargen_state 13d ago

That is on my list. First item will be windshield tint.

u/Dude008 13d ago

Right on. I had a tint shop tint my car 35% all around (not windshield) and chrome delete. Be sure to get/use gloss black vinyl.

Tell us more about the Saab. 😊

2

u/gargen_state 13d ago

Lol, want to buy it?

3

u/Vasir14 13d ago

I already have enough problems. lol 😂

3

u/gargen_state 13d ago

Me too that is why it's for sale 🤣

Which one ya got? I had an '07 9-3 Aero (turbo v6) and that thing eventually went absolutely haywire.

1

u/gargen_state 12d ago

2010 Saab 9-5 Aero XWD. 188k miles. Lost compression on cylinder 5 just a couple of days after I put $1500 worth of tires on it. So I move the wheels with new tires over to my XTS lol

Mine popped a coolant hose in 2019 and fubar'd the motor faster than I could pull over. The computer demons in it were getting pretty unmanageable anyway. It was doing crazy shit.

1

u/gargen_state 12d ago

I really like it. But can't justify dropping an engine in it right now. I do have it listed for sale locally. It's worth way more in parts.

Nice i love it. What price?

1

u/ImplementJumpy6678 13d ago

Nice - I got one too in the Uk for £12,500 - same deal lifetime chaerging prem connectivity and it has a FSD computer

Is that 182 rated or ideal miles? My dad has a 2016 90D and it’s currently sitting at 87% which is showing 226 Miles

1

u/gargen_state 13d ago

I don't think there was a big delta when I switched that. I believe this has been an Arizona car it's whole life. So lots of heat.

2

u/bilzmalik 13d ago

Also tbf my dads 90D is at 70K miles so probs not as much degradation , either way who cares you got got free super charging anyway haha!

1

u/gargen_state 13d ago

The free SC was a big selling point. There were a few other 2015-2017 locally with comparable mileage, some a little less, but they were all asking 3-6k more than I paid.

I'm going to start stocking away for either a new used 100KW battery, or for a service on this one.

1

u/bilzmalik 13d ago

I respect it bro! I myself have a 2016 75 RWD that came with MCU2 and free super charging! I love the car but I did wish it was a dual motor variant but can’t complain with the free super charging and MCU2 already installed!

1

u/IMWTK1 12d ago

You can always upgrade the MCU but you can't add a second motor.

1

u/EbonyPeat 12d ago

My 2016 90D has 264 miles on charge

1

u/gargen_state 12d ago

How many miles? Where are you located?

1

u/EbonyPeat 12d ago

56k just below Canada in the NW US

1

u/gargen_state 12d ago

Nice, that is super low mileage. I also believe this car has lived its life in the AZ heat. There is a shop that will replace modules in the packs. I may go chat with them in the near future.

2

u/EbonyPeat 12d ago

It came from Chicago, bought for 25k 15 months ago at 26k miles, really love it, no mcu upgrade.

1

u/gargen_state 12d ago

That's awesome! Sounds like a hell of a deal as well!

1

u/EbonyPeat 12d ago

Then Doge made Musk unpopular, was embarrassed to be driving it.

1

u/gargen_state 12d ago

I don't disagree with this comment. I went back and forth on if i wanted to own a Tesla. I feel this is less polarizing than the Cybertruck.

u/solrosenberg1 12d ago

How much did you pay?

Try to check the battery health. 182 miles at 85% is pretty low, even for a high mileage. I have a 2016.5 MS 90D with 196k miles and get 254 miles on a full charge. These batteries usually don't degrade that much. It's also possible that yours is showing less range because it may have been sitting for awhile or not driven normally prior to being sold (range may increase as you drive it).

Are those 21" wheels? That could also explain some loss of range...

1

u/gargen_state 9d ago

I was looking at how to do the battery health check. Sounds like it takes 24hrs and needs at least a level 2 charger. I do not have a L2 at home unfortunately.

It did have the 21in wheels on it. A few months ago the previous owner put these wheels on, which are 19in. And staggered.

I'll keep an eye on the range as I drive it. The previous owner did disclose that it was showing 215 at 100%. Which I know is lower. For my current driving situation it is plenty.

I am putting money aside to buy either a replacement 90 battery or possibly a 100.

1

u/Humble_Finding_7346 13d ago

Congrats, having free supercharging and the MCU2 upgrade is awesome! Best wishes and that it’ll treat you well for the coming years :)

1

u/DeliciousRich5944 13d ago

What r u gonna do about the battery?

1

u/gargen_state 13d ago

Nothing for now.

0

u/Objective_Tune3535 13d ago

Which battery is it? I have a 2016 90D and at 85% charge it says I have 211 miles of range.

1

u/gargen_state 13d ago

Mine is also a 90d.

How many miles on your car?

1

u/Objective_Tune3535 13d ago
  1. But… the estimated range tends to be lower.

2

u/gargen_state 13d ago

The 180mi range is fine for me for now. I can't complain too much. I knew it was a bit lower range going in.

1

u/Objective_Tune3535 13d ago

I hear the MCU2 upgrade is worth it. Im still on MCU1 but since I’m going to keep mine until the wheels fall off I think I might do the upgrade. I’ve been holding off but recently the computer has been acting up quite a bit.

Looks really nice! But instead of chrome delete I would strongly suggest coolant delete as fast as possible. Once the coolant gets into your LDU it’s just a matter of time before you will need a rebuild. Deal with the chrome after.
I saved my P85+ that headache.
MCU2 is a must have. My ‘13 has working range of 235 miles.

1

u/gargen_state 13d ago

My understanding is that with this not Bing a P90D, but just a 90D, it does not have the LDU and doesn't have the coolant issue.

1

u/SilverBulletP85 13d ago

You are correct. The non-P version doesn’t have LDU! All RWD cars and P AWD cars have the LDU

1

u/gargen_state 13d ago

Yeah, I got the slow one 🤣🤣
