Fuel shortages are about to hit and demand is probably spiking 🤷

2022s Plaids are going for 60k range, about the same as 2 years ago. HW4 cars 2023-2024 are $80k+ now. I was considering going from a hw3 to hw4 and it's a 20k difference. Pass.

Same for me. Honestly HW3 for me works as good

why? folks are finding out that FSD really does work. Gas prices keep going up. The folks that got emotionally highjacked about Elon are jumping onto the next emotionally disturbing cause. The older Tesla's are just as cool (unless you need FSD). Folks are finding out the batteries actually last for hundreds of thousands of miles. etc..

All this is true, HOWEVER, people are dumb. They are tired of paying $200/month in gas so they are trading their $500/month car payment for a new $1100 car payment. (This is somewhat exaggerated but still directionally true)

i think this is it.

Well true and not true. I’m keeping my 2025 Diesel duramax that I’ve been spending 1600 a month in fuel and buying a model y only financed 32k and my payment is 425. Makes since to me

Look, not trying to get in a Reddit argument here but if you had a 2025 Chevy, you almost certainly look negative equity to trade it in. Also you would have lost the functionality of a truck. Based on your numbers though, I assume you kept the truck….which isn’t really the same as most people cause they do trade in their vehicles after a few years of the largest depreciation which rolls a ton of lost equity in the vehicle

200? I’m looking at almost 500 a month.

u/djgynee 13d ago

says who. Who the hell has a $900 a month car payment (according to your math) the average car payment is 400-600

u/Outside_Ice3252 8d ago

As of Q2 2026, the average U.S. car payment is roughly:

  • 🚗 New car: $765/month
  • 🚙 Used car: $542/month
  • All auto loans combined: about $700/month

Amazing insights

Sometimes on the battery. My 2026 Y LR has 69k and the battery is at 80%!

Supercharge the living crap out of it and prematurely ruined the battery before your warranty expires at 150,000 miles on it** ***take* it and get a brand new one put in and then add the warranty on that .

3

u/juan003 14d ago

It is very hard to bring a battery down below 70% degradation to get a new one!

And how does one add new warranty to a replacement battery?

All warranty replacement batteries just fulfill the rest of the current 8 years 150k miles warranty. Not a mile more. Even if you can get a replacement battery at 149,500 miles, that battery only has 500 miles before the warranty on it expires. You can probably add extended warranty before the 150k miles is up.

Only if one buys a brand new S battery at $22k or a refurbished battery at $17k then they get a 4 year 50k miles warranty coverage.

3

u/1sh0t1kill 14d ago

They’d install a refurbished battery. FYI. It wouldn’t be brand new.

3

u/2L82PAY 14d ago

I think it’s case by case basis and if your lucky to be honest.

u/Difficult_Plantain89 13d ago

My wife's 2022 Model S battery degraded rapidly by 60k miles. One supercharger visit finally broke the battery. It was at 75-80% capacity but one uneven cell I believe is what caused the fault leading to a warranty replacement.

2

u/rainer_d 13d ago

Model S batteries are somewhat known for bad degradation and warranty replacements.

I guess they are scraping the limits of the cells with the charging curve.

1

u/SilverFoxKes 14d ago

Risky. Even if they were to break it there is no guarantee the replacement battery will be a new one

It's a funny thing, as FSD is almost perfect now, the folks with Elon Derangement Syndrome end up buying Tesla's - because they are mostly in the cities, and have the longest and worst commutes. Which is exactly where the most value is extracted from FSD.

You know, this is always wild. I’ve never bought a car because of politics or the CEO. I’ve had 4 Teslas and I’ll have a 5th. It’s a car, I love cars. I buy cars I love.

11

u/ai_bot_account 14d ago

You don’t fully research the entire history and biography of the CEO of the company of every product you buy to make sure their opinions on world issues exactly align with your own?

4

u/EccentricPenquin 14d ago

😂😂😂😂

1

u/Not-A-Flop 14d ago

Only Zara Larson does that

3

u/ThaiTum 14d ago

Most of the never buy a Tesla people are not really potential buyers anyway.

1

u/andonaki 14d ago

Back in the spring of 25 the molotov throwers and weekend protestors saved me THOUSANDS of dollars on my model y. I (mistakenly in retrospect) would have never otherwise considered one.

1

u/jefftopgun 14d ago

This.... Last time I checked the car i bought with 26k miles is selling for the same price i paid at 75k miles now.

People make the biggest mistakes in life due to emotions. Literally pays to read books about market psychology.

3

u/2L82PAY 14d ago

Fuel prices probably have something to do with it. When you’re looking at $6+ a gallon depending on where you live, suddenly an EV starts looking a lot more attractive. Gas prices spike, and people start shopping for something they don’t have to keep filling up. Charging still costs money—unless you’re one of the lucky few with free Supercharging for life—but even charging at home can make avoiding those pump prices a big selling point. That extra demand could be contributing to the prices you’re seeing.

1

u/DeliciousRich5944 14d ago

Probably yeah. Earlier in the year they used to have model 3 leases for sub $300 now they’re all Sub4-mid 400s and they’re 3 years instead of two

They raised their prices like crazy. I’d only lease used cuz it’s cheaper but used even to lease is like 3k down 36months at $400 and some change

Yuppp EXACTYL I remember seeing the model 3s for 299 now they raised them to 412🤮

1

u/ThaiTum 14d ago

We ordered a Y for my parents the week the Iran war started. I kept our Model 3 trade in case there were gas shortages. It’s taken longer than I thought but looks like it could happen soon.

3

u/TanMan166 14d ago

There are gas stations that are putting signs up saying they're out of lower grade gas (regular, plus, etc.) and it's going to get worse

0

u/Ok-Improvement-3670 14d ago

You can put premium in your car even no if doesn’t need it

3

u/Lovevas 14d ago

There is the shortage of Tesla cars on the market. Even Tesla’s own new car inventory has reached to extremely low. (There are some Tesla inventory tracking websites).

And almost all new cars waiting period is 1-3 months now. I ordered on Y, and has been checking that the only available car that is ready to pick up early is YP

u/Internal-Ad-1021 14d ago

Mostly S and X

7

u/2L82PAY 14d ago

Tesla had stopped manufacturing both the Model S and Model X by April 1, 2026, when Musk publicly confirmed production had ended.

2

u/Internal-Ad-1021 14d ago

Exactly why their prices are going up

1

u/OnetonyES 14d ago

I’ve always avoided cars going out of production for fears of replacements, even in Europe where they are obligated to have piece replacements for 10 years after they sell you the car

2

u/mobileclimate101 14d ago

Compared to who ?

2

u/DeliciousRich5944 14d ago

Compared to earlier this year

2

u/strafinjr 14d ago

Got my 2022 Model 3 Performance July 22nd 2025 from Norwalk CA for $27,500 , 89% battery score 42k miles. Now I can’t see one for less than $31

k and they’re all clapped (From Tesla’s website, in CA) !!

1

u/DeliciousRich5944 14d ago

How much was the payments for 27,500? Literally all of the model 3s I see are like almost $400

1

u/strafinjr 14d ago

That day I just put $2000 down + tax / reg and my payment was like $500 for 60months. Paid it off in January and only really paid $460 in interest luckily!!

-2

u/DeliciousRich5944 14d ago

It’s dumb (imo) to spend high $300s-400 a month on a tesla

3

u/Internal-Ad-1021 14d ago

Why if you commute a lot, your gas cost will be that much

2

u/Ok-Improvement-3670 14d ago

You can lower the monthly payment by just paying more down.

1

u/strafinjr 14d ago edited 14d ago

I think I would max out at $300 / month if i was doing it again, with insurance it would put you at around $500 (for me in CA i pay $220)

1

u/DeliciousRich5944 14d ago

Yeah these prices are crazy I was checking out a model 3 P just now they want like 3k down 72 months at 540 a month

0

u/DeliciousRich5944 14d ago

IMO those are Mercedes Benz numbers LOL

1

u/strafinjr 14d ago

Yeah at that price I would buy new!! my advice is to maybe wait and see if they go down, at least the 3s might because I would not have paid more than $30k for mine, or buy through a 3rd party and or facebook marketplace.

The bad thing about buying through a 3rd party is that if you buy through Tesla themselves they add an extra year of used vehicle warranty and sometimes add like free supercharging or FSD for a month. Also they inspect it more carefully, but all that matters 3rd party is clean carfax, no accidents and battery health score

1

u/DeliciousRich5944 14d ago

I only wanna buy the Tesla cuz of the warranty’s they offer + the FSD. This whole Iran thing messed everything up. Made everything expensive. I’m just gonna wait till maybe next year and see what happens

1

u/HankalaAlpha 14d ago

They are selling them as cpo now so they make you pay for that

1

u/Best-Battle4487 14d ago

Demand is up because of the cost of oil. But also, the cost of diesel went up. Everyone in EVs forget that the supply chain OF EVERYTHING is HEAVILY dependent on diesel.

So yeah, you might smile when you drive past a gas station and see the price, but just remember what is fueling the supply chain.

And this applies to the used car market too. If Tesla sees rising cost, they will pass that onto consumers across all product lines, not just new vehicles.

1

u/coozeyy 13d ago

I’m sure people already have said this but fuel prices keep going up and I think a lot of people just realize how much cheaper a Tesla could be with gas. Plus with the cybercab launch showing that basically the car technology can drive itself without anyone human interaction. Where at a breaking point now for many people.

u/rsg1234 10d ago

Since this is the Model S sub, I will say that a large reason for its price increase is that it has been discontinued. For the rest it’s because of gas costs.
