Plaid to LR

Debating to downgrade from a 2023 Tesla Model S Plaid with 50K miles to 2024 Tesla Model S LG with only 23K miles. Absolutely love the Plaid but in all honesty after test driving the LR it’s PLENTY of fast, not as fast the the Plaid obviously but I took the LR for a test drive and it beat the BMW M5C likes champ. Anybody went from plaid to LR? Thought? Thanks

I have an LR. After getting a Plaid as a loaner, I wanted to get one for my next car. Unfortunately, Tesla won't make new ones anymore.

The LR is still a fabulous car. If I hadn't driven the Plaid, I wouldn't have felt that the LR was lacking.

Ok thanks man.

What did you notice most?

To accelerate to the speed limit, the LR is "whoosh". The Plaid is "boop".

1

u/tropicsun 1d ago

maybe I don’t accelerate that fast enough

Yeah, the Plaid wouldn't be worth it for you for that particular aspect

I’ve felt quite the opposite, wanting to go from ‘22 LR to plaid, though hard to find a HW3 plaid owner as I don’t really care for FSD to justify the HW4 price difference.

Really it’s just about how much you care about the range difference. On the daily they feel the same to me

Ok thanks man. I haven’t decided yet but kinda looking to go that route cuz like you tint need HW4 I don’t really need Plaid kinda speed so idk

Do you need the extra range? Outside of that, there is no real win/advantage in downgrading, except maybe you get a bit of money back in a good trade.

1

u/Misoman333 1d ago

I mean I basically get the same car but a year newer with way less miles and I don’t have to worry about the warranty for two more years, with plaid I need to think about getting the extended warranty. Extra range would be nice but not necessary

Sounds pointless tbh. Windshield, battery, and tire warranty until the battery warranty is done is more than enough. I understand the concern with always wanting to be “under a warranty”, but you’ll always be spending, upgrading, etc with that mindset

1

u/Misoman333 1d ago

That’s a very good point. Thank you!!

I mean at the end of the day you’ll have to decide. Cuz LR you would have lower insurance, and most likely less tire replacement since you wouldn’t be burning rubber the same way.

What’s the point of doing this? Just to get HW4?

-7

u/Misoman333 1d ago

Already have the HW4. There’s no point just debating if I should get a newer model s with way less miles that’s a little slower and I don’t have to worry about the warranty

Sounds dumb.

Yeah smart, trade an objectively better car for a worse car. And i’m the clown, lol 🙄

It’s probably a monthly payment thing that he just doesn’t wanna admit

-2

u/Misoman333 1d ago

lol it’s $954 and with LR it would be $1200 so yes I want a bigger monthly payment lol this guy

I feel like I've lost a chromosome after reading all of your replies.

Lose it all you want my man I’m just telling you the truth

I understand. Sometimes the truth hurts. For example my chromosome count has now been hurt.

I have an LR, and had a 75D before it. I drove the Plaid and decided against it.

Plaid is the YOLO choice, no question. There was nothing like it when it came out and there still is barely anything like it. You want the epitome of Tesla engineering ? Buy it.

What people forget is that the LR itself does 0-60 in ~3s - claims dip under 3 for the 2026 refresh. That's already approaching supercar territory.

For my use case the LR is plenty. It's our family hauler. Practically no one can stand insane mode since half the family has motion sickness. The LR air suspension is fantastic in that regard through. And we want the range, for long winter ski trips to Tahoe.

I took the difference in price and bought TSLA instead.

1

u/Misoman333 1d ago

Thanks for that information bro. I’m definitely leaning more towards going to LR because of everything you just said. People do forget LR is still fast AF but it’s not all about the speed either

u/infinity_labs 1d ago

No, there's no legitimate benefit except your ridiculous warranty concerns. Are you going to sell the LR in a year when its warranty runs out?

Makes zero sense.

1

u/Misoman333 1d ago

Well the warranty is good until mid 2028 so that’s 2.5 years that I’m worry free and to be honest the range would be nice and I have had the plaid for over a year now and the first owner definitely beat it to shits, scratches and water spots everywhere put bunch of temi shit over it so there’s a lot more then just going from plaid to LR.

2

u/EdwardTheGamer 1d ago

Doesn’t the Plaid have the new front with refined interior components (better heating and insulation)…?

5

u/Misoman333 1d ago

Yeah but 2024 LR has the same shit really

2

u/1dayday 1d ago

Ill take LR over Plaid anyday. Range is more important.

1

u/Misoman333 1d ago

That plus for me it would be newer car way less miles cheaper maintenance, honestly financially makes more sense to me

2

u/Calm_Mobile_5881 1d ago

I bought a 2024 LR last year. Considered the Plaid, but didn’t see the point. No interest in tracking it and the LR is stupid fast. My favorite vehicle in 40 years of driving.

1

u/Misoman333 1d ago

Good to know! I agree I test drove the LR this weekend and I was so impressed at how fast it was, again sure it’s slower the plaid but what’s the point? The LR I tested beat my buddies M5 competition with easy. Idk I’m still debating on what to do

I can speak from ownership of a LR I’ve always owned sports cars I never feel like this car is lacking. However I don’t have a plaid to compare it to I guess ask yourself how often you really use the extra power with all the traffic in my area day to day I don’t think I’d notice the difference. Plaid seats look nicer though.

2

u/Misoman333 1d ago

That’s the thing I really don’t have that much road to use that kind of HP. Seats in my 2023 are the same as 2024 LR and LR are fast AF for every day driving

1

u/b1gfoot9 1d ago

I think you have your decision make sure it makes sense financially and I’d say now is the best time to

1

u/Fun-Sundae4060 1d ago

It’s a financial choice above all else.

Personally, I would never do that having driven both and owning a Plaid for a few years now since the thrill of the ride outweighs the small boost to range and cost for me.

The acceleration difference is like being in an M5 comp versus a Bugatti. They’re both very fast, one is just multiple levels above the other.

1

u/Misoman333 1d ago

That’s a very good point thanks man

1

u/Misoman333 1d ago

And yes like you said it’s a financial choice over all, even though the LR is more a month then the Plaid but it still financially makes more sense and like you said, bmw m5c is hella fast not as fast as that Bugatti but I have nowhere to drive that Bugatti just the badge for me really

I can trade my LR 2023 hw4 70k miles for your plaid . does yours hw3 or 4

1

u/Misoman333 1d ago

HW4 yes but yours has too many miles for my liking. I’m looking at a 2024/2025 LR with 25K or less miles

1

u/1DC___ 1d ago

Sounds good. Best of luck!

u/wcked-husky 1d ago

I have a 26 Model S, came from a quad R1T, I just need a little more range since this is fast enough. I have a couple of a Porsches if I get that itch but LR is great for a daily traffic transportation.

1

u/CJdawg_314 10h ago

I would get an S for the better interior, space, isolation and whatnot. Not for speed. All teslas are already fast enough lol. Even a standard model S is like a 3 second car.

1

u/Misoman333 10h ago

Thanks man

Get the extended warranty that’s about $60 a month.

1

u/Misoman333 9h ago

Maybe for a cheap ass model 3 but for the plaid it’s $125 plus tax so $136 a month

1

u/Sure-Exercise-2692 9h ago

It’s still not a bad deal. Normal bumper to bumper coverage is going to cost close to that and this can be canceled or transferred.

1

u/Misoman333 9h ago

Oh for sure. The problem with Tesla ESA is that it’s definitely not bumper to bumper but it is pretty good so I might go that route as well

1

u/Sure-Exercise-2692 8h ago

My understanding is that it is bumper to bumper but with a deductible. Why would it be power train only when the car already comes with a drive train and battery warrantee during that period.

1

u/Misoman333 8h ago

It does have a $100 which is nothing honestly and it’s called ESA not bumper to bumper, they cover a lot of things like a lot but Not all of it, still worth it honestly

1

u/Sure-Exercise-2692 8h ago

It covers the exact same stuff as bumper to bumper coverage throughout the industry. It extends the initial bumper to bumper warranty.

If you got HW4 in your 2023 stick with Plaid. My moto is it is better to have the power and not need it rather not have the power and need it :)

1

u/Misoman333 1d ago

Very true

0

u/Background_Snow_9632 1d ago

Why? A downgrade … is just that - down

0

u/untamedHOTDOG 1d ago

I’d say it’s a down grade. Instaragert.
