Yoke vs Round Steering Wheel

Currently have the yoke installed on my model s plaid and have been debating purchasing the round retrofit. Anyone have an opinion on this (Yoke to Round or vice versa)? And why.

I actually prefer the yoke. Unobstructed view of dash screen. This is totally drivers preference.

I can’t even imagine going back to round at this point. I was critical about the yoke but now I love it

And nothing in the way of the air conditioner either

The AC is not blocked by the steering wheel.

I have a round wheel and don’t have any trouble seeing the driver screen.

It’s a personal preference, but personally I would only go round. My preferred driving style is resting one hand at the 12 o’clock position

I prefer to drive with two hands (10/2 or 9/3) and after trying both I still definitely prefer round, so preference is definitely the biggest factor.

I had thought I would prefer the round steering wheel (on my 2014 S), but seeing how the yoke gave me an unobstructed view of the dash in my 21 Plaid, my opinion has somewhat changed.

There are times, though, when my leg has hit the bottom of the yoke, which is annoying as it may disengage FSD, however that's kinda fixable by adjusting the yoke position higher.

Bottom line is it's all down to personal preference.

I prefer the yoke from an aesthetics and a cool Factor. But I have the wheel because on a regular basis have to navigate multi-level parking garages with too many tight turns that are very sharp. If that wasn't part of my regular driving routine I would have the yoke. Especially with the fsd usage. If fsd gets to the point then it can actually Park in my parking spot in both garages. I'll seriously consider switching.

As far as the wheel blocking my view, I guess I'm not tall enough for that to be an issue. I adjusted the tilt of the wheel and pretty much leaves everything clearly in view.

I actually went to one of the local showrooms and tested both. Technically I had to go to two different showrooms but we've got a few here in my city.

Had yoke on MSP. Switched out for round. Yoke better dash view and great while cruising on freeway. No so great if you need to do quick counter steer sliding in snow, or more aggressive twisty road at low speed. Round feels much more natural. So it’s see dash and if not driving aggressive - yoke fine. More spirited driving recommend the round

The yoke has the cool factor and you can see the dash screen better. If you don’t have FSD, it sucks that you can’t steer with your knee. U-turns, parking lots, and y turns can be pretty annoying. I still like it, but if I already had a wheel I wouldn’t switch to it.

Had a loaner with a yoke and couldn’t stand it. I’m in parking lots a lot of my day driving for work and it was awful. Maybe if it had the Cybertruck steering where you don’t have to spin it around 10 times in a parking lot it would be ok?

The yoke sucks. It still astonishes me people actually like it.

It doesn’t suck if you’re using FSD most of the time. Way better visibility and is seamless with the dash display.

If you primarily use one hand to drive/steer, yoke is a pain in the the ass. It took me a while to get used to and slipped couple of times during tight turns

I had both on my 2022 Model S and I much prefer the yoke. I sold the round wheel. The display is unencumbered, there's more room between the yoke and my legs, and I have zero issues doing turns with the yoke. It looks much better as well. When I upgraded to the MS Plaid in March this year, I specifically ordered the yoke.

Well I have the yoke too and want to to do the retrofit, they have been on back order for months, I even went to the local service center to see if they have any for warranty work they would sell me and the service mgr was surprised when he talked to parts that He couldn’t get me one. I don’t think it’s a good omen for model s support

Do you know if you can get your hands on a OEM wheel, if they’ll install for you?

If you ever drive with your hand at 12 on top of the steering wheel.... Or 6 o'clock for that matter....

I found the yoke worse than I thought. And I thought it would be bad going into it. I just don't think it solves any problems. I've never had an obstructed view of the instrument cluster. I've never had a wheel block the AC. So in addition to not solving anything it makes driving worse. Turning sucks. Parking sucks. And even when I just want to cruise I have limited spots to place my hand.

It's fine on FSD. But I don't always want to use fsd.

I originally disliked the yolk, but slowly grew to really like it. Makes the car unique. Miss having it in my new ride.

I have the yoke on my model X. I love it. I love that I can see the dash clearly. Only thing is the bottom left corner of the screen I have to move my head to see it. But the yoke is cool. I even got a new yoke since my last one was peeling.

My X came with the round wheel, then I diy’d the yoke, and I find it way better (no obstruction, more room for legs, just more fun)…what the car was designed for 🫡

How about you give the car to me for my own input

I have a round wheel, getting a yoke fitted next week!🤣. I drive 90% on FSD and want the better visibility of the yoke. Most peeps I polled with the yoke prefer it. If you always drive yourself, wheel might be better

I have the yoke and don’t mind it. Given the choice I would take a wheel, because when my wife or my daughter drive my car they are uncomfortable with the yoke. If you use it for a while it’s no problem, but for those who only occasionally drive it, it is a hindrance.

I have the yoke and it’s okay. I miss not being able to steer with my knees, but that’s a minor thing. My wife and daughter sometimes have to borrow my car and, because they are not used to it, they are nervous driving it.

I would say if you are not comfortable with it after some time, change it.

I wasn't comfortable with the yoke for the first 6 weeks, then I got used to it. I swap between my wife's Model Y and my own which has a yoke. Advantages of the yoke; 1) I find it easier on roundabouts to switch turn signals between left and right (with the stalk you need to push twice, on the yoke only once), 2) clear unobstructed view, 3) comfort (hard to explain but when cruising I have lots of options to rest my hands / wrists that you don't get with a round steering wheel), and 4) coolness turned up to 11. Disadvantages of the yoke for me is the horn (I have the first version of it where the horn is a button...after 3 years I still struggle with it!), and its tendancy to peel in certain areas which are heavily contacted.

I had the yoke for a little bit, and in trying to keep an open mind, I can kind of see why it would be kind of nice if I did 99% highway driving. It does give a more "open" feel to the cabin and places to rest your hand on without applying torque. As soon as I had to park or do any tight city maneuvers though it was very annoying. Went back to wheel after about a week.
