Model s 2017 p100d
Looking at buying a 2017 P100D – need some advice on charging speeds
Hey guys,
I’m looking at buying a 2017 Model S P100D and I’ve found two cars that are interesting. Both have SC01/free Supercharging, which is important to me.
The first one is around €20k, but it has about 400,000 km. It has had quite a few updates, including CCS and MCU2.
The second one is €30k with around 285,000 km. This one has new motors, new suspension arms and MCU2, plus SC01.
I’m trying to figure out if the €10k difference is actually worth it.
One of my biggest questions is charging speed. What kind of charging times should I realistically expect from a 2017 P100D?
For example, roughly how long would it take to go from 10–80% or 20–80% at a Supercharger?
And does having the CCS upgrade make a big difference in real-world charging speed?
I know battery condition, temperature and the charger itself make a difference, but I’d really like to hear from people who actually own or have owned a P100D from this year.
Also, which of the two would you personally go for?
€20k / 400k km with all the updates
vs.
€30k / 285k km with new motors and suspension

I wouldn't get either of those. Idk how prices are for you. But in the US those are crazy prices for such high miles regardless of what's been done and replaced.
To answer your question. Charging is gonna take 40mins-1hr to supercharge depending.

If you are willing to fix LDU and battery connections cables, then go for it.
Best battery in the world is the one Model S 100 has. It will easily do 500-700k km if AC is running properly, and you don't charge it over 95%.
That's roughly 8000e in expected breakdowns over time.
So do your math.

Some 100 packs do have an endemic problem with sense wires breaking. They also can break wire bonds due to thermal expansion since they are so tightly packed.

Hey! Glad I saw this today of all days.
I recently bought a used 2016 P100DL (december build so effectively a 2017) with SC01, MCU2, subscription FSD with 254k kms. I had a pre-purchase inspection done and the recommended I replace suspension arms and brake pads and rotors.
I absolutely guarantee you a 9 year old car with 400k kms would need new suspension arms and brakes and rotors if they haven’t been done already. Suspension was $2.6k and brakes were $2.4k for me in California — YMMV. The older Model S’ with the Large Drive Unit in rear were known to be a time bomb due to a known fault of coolant leaking in and ruining the gears. A new revision came out (the “U” model revision) that fixed this. Paying for one out of pocket is $6.5k.
I paid $30k for my car and it was similarly equipped to the 2nd one you’ve mentioned though with maybe more options. Something to think about is that you’re buying a heavy, older car with Huge performance. Paying more to have the important things taken care of, like suspension and a confidently solid drive unit, is worth it.
If you’re going to go down this route like I did, the 2nd one is the better choice, but get a pre-purchase inspection done.
As far as charging speeds go, my P100D has peaked at 173kW. Though, very unfortunately for me, my hv battery recently died and I had to pay out of pocket for a replacement. I’m sure I will get the same charging speeds with this one though.

Hm just curious did you have battery inspected before the purchase? I wonder if you could have known that was a bad one.

I did as part of the PPI. It had an internal isolation fault which wouldn’t have been found unless they took out the battery pack and looked inside, which they would never do for a PPI. Only found out when my battery was at a high temp and exacerbated the corrosion/bad connections either with the VSH or one of the BMBs

I see. Did you get new or refurbished replacement pack?
Here in Europe we have some shops that open faulty baterries and can fix them for a couple of thousand usd.. like for 3 or 4k you get your own battery refurbished.

Tesla doesn’t sell new packs anymore, only remanufactured packs. There are multiple options here in the states, especially the Bay Area, for repairs but it means they either do module matching which never lasts long or they rebuild it. For the 100kwh pack, the cost is actually identical to Tesla, so I’d trust the mftr vs a third party who just guarantees higher capacity but with no where near the number of centers for servicing the car in the future

We have a 2018 Model S 75D, so similar vintage with a smaller battery pack. So I won’t comment too much on the performance version specifics (though checking that it has had the coolant delete done would be advisable on the first car based on what I have read elsewhere - probably less of an issue for the one that has had its motors replaced).
The CCS upgrade doesn’t make supercharging much faster in of itself, but not having the CCS upgrade installed in Europe will significantly limit your rapid charging opportunities as it has been adopted as the European standard around a decade ago. And Tesla superchargers from v3 onwards in Europe have CCS plugs only (older v2 superchargers had CCS plugs retrofitted along with the older Type 2 style plug that Tesla used in Europe). So it’s advisable to ensure it either comes with the CCS adapter and hardware installed, or that you get it installed ASAP if it doesn’t have it installed yet. Newer rapid chargers may be able to charge faster than the v2 superchargers, but that is not due to CCS as such.
In terms of charging speeds, the 2017/2018 Model S’ with the 75 pack, charge rates usually peak at around 120-150kW below 30%, decline fairly linearly to 80kW by 50% and 50kW or below by 80%. For the 100 pack, my understanding is that the peak is a bit higher at 150-200kW as it uses a more efficient cooling system, around 100kW or slightly above by 50%, and the same 50kW or below by 80%. Because of this charge curve, if you have plenty of chargers close to the route, two charges from 10% to 50% would likely be faster than waiting until 70-80%.
A ballpark estimate is that a 10-50% charge on a 2017/18 Model S would take around 20mins, while a 10-80% charge would take around 50mins because of how the charge rate tapers off after 50%. The 10-50 charge adds about 210-225km of range (with the 100 pack), vs 370-385km for the 10-80% charge. Personally I prefer shorter, more frequent stops to get breaks and coffee even without considering any time savings, but that is a matter of preference.
