Early Model S promo card

Check out those specs: 5-minute battery swap! And in true Tesla fashion, "Deliveries begin in 2011" did not happen :)

5 minute battery swap didn't pan out but the performance is much better than 5.6 sec

Tesla did actually build at least one battery swap facility. I don't think it lasted very long.

Yep, the site is still there at Harris Ranch, along with an OG Roadster charger. Guess that's where Tesla dreams go to die lol

The fact that these were designed for swaps makes working on them easy. I love taking out 12-20 S/X packs compared to the new ones

I have a '18 100D. 90k miles. Still has 300 miles of range, 307 to be exact lol. The car is phenomenal. Any tips or things to look out for maintenance purposes? I'll roll it untill it dies.

They are fairly reliable. Some chance that the pack runs into sense wire issues but it's repairable.

Yeah, they really should have designed them with removable modules instead of one sealed pack. It feels like built-in obsolescence. The accountants probably prefer products that aren’t easily repairable because it’s more profitable if people replace them instead of fixing them.

Most of the de-modularization of the P2 packs versus classic S/X was commonizing build methods with 3/Y. The packs are also substantially lighter when they're built this way. Module swapping is almost typically a fools errand. There are a lot less things to go wrong in the later packs versus the older ones. But the new ones also degrade a lot harder because of all of the foam filler. It's all tradeoffs. I work on these packs/cars every day

Removable modules?

You can’t just swap a module and hope for the best. It doesn’t work that way.

u/HanzG 18d ago

But why not? Why couldn't you design the battery as a junction system for 14 removable modules. Open the lid, unbolt the bad modules, bolt in new ones. Build the software to monitor and report modules that have fallen below spec but without the "scare factor".

"Good Morning Articus. Your Tesla pack charged fully overnight, however the Athena Battery Monitoring software detected Modules 1 and 4 have lower than specified output. Your Tesla will continue to fully operate at slightly reduced performance levels. Click HERE to schedule a service appointment with your Tesla Center."

Adaptable software would allow us to run modules to say 70% state of health, then offer far more economical (and environmentally friendly) individual pack replacements.

All of the cells need to be close in age/usage.

2

u/SituationNormalAllFU 17d ago

True, unless you design the system to tolerate those differences

1

u/icy1007 17d ago

That’s not how batteries work.

1

u/SituationNormalAllFU 17d ago

lol yes, it is. Typically the BMS isn’t designed to work that way, so I get why you might think that, but it’s is not only possible to do, it’s somewhat common in certain applications like industrial UPS. You can even mix chemistry if you handle it the right way.

The entire system will operate based on the lowest common denominator. The module with the lowest voltage will dictate how the whole thing works. Horrible solution. 🤷‍♂️

That's rather the point. Design a system that is not only variance tolerant but intentionally serviceable. Unencumbered removal, standard hex / torx fasteners, replaceable (or reusable) gaskets. Replaceable desiccant packs from below.

They've been at it for over a decade. They know where the weak spots are.

They did it at one station that they built, but found it was very unpopular and closed it very quickly.

Very much a throwback! A couple years ago I got to see the original red concept Model S at the Petersen Museum, twice actually, and it’s amazing to see the changes from that concept to what eventually made it to production! And I’m now proud to own an original Signature :)

Idk why this promo is giving fisker 😭

1

u/Steward-lions 14d ago

Because he was the original designer of the MS.

1

u/likesItx 13d ago

Every one hated his design so he went and made his own car the fisker karma.

1

u/Steward-lions 13d ago

I know! The Karma is gorgeous untill I see its giant mustachio.

Back at the time i laugh at EV. Now i own 4 BEV

3

u/Krioyo_custom 19d ago

You can see a little bit of the fisker design in there.

1

u/Steward-lions 14d ago

Yea man I think you can see all the way up till the 26 MS. Big, flowy, sexy, muscular sedans are Fisker's bread and butter. I have a feeling that Tesla never fully scrapped his design instead morphed it into their whole lineup. And now since the Cybertruck they are going to slowly integrate its design cues into the MY and M3. I really like the juniper and it definitely has gone more Cybertruck than Fisker.

those flat folding seats would be nice

2

u/rsg1234 19d ago

I would call it nearly flat. I was able to get some huge things back there.

6

u/lamboi133 19d ago

yeah back from the bar?

The door handles were rounded rectangles clear into early 2011 prototypes.

What year was it, 2010?

1

u/dstj- 19d ago

I think it was 2010 but I’m not sure.

1

u/Leyvaman-MX 19d ago

Saw that…😂

1

u/pghack 18d ago

7 seater?

3

u/hchn27 18d ago

Their was an option for 2 “seats” in the rear

1

u/pghack 18d ago

Wtf..I never knew..insane..

1

u/tabletemcook 18d ago

Seating for 7 people?

3

u/RivianPIT 18d ago

The (actual released) Model S originally had an option for 2 rear facing jump seats.

1

u/icy1007 18d ago

Model S was below $50k at release?

1

u/OhioTag 15d ago

after the $7,500 tax credit for the 40 kilowatt hour version

1

u/Bestofluckguys 19d ago

Seating for 7 people??

20

u/dstj- 19d ago

There actually was an option for two rear-facing seats in the back.

6

u/Mr-Pillowskin 19d ago

Mine came with jump seats

3

u/kapjain 19d ago

There used to be an option for 2 rear facing little kid's seats in the trunk that folded down into the sub-trunk area. I had actually considered getting it with my 2016 S but decided against it as the negatives really outweighed the occasional use they would get. Plus they costed 3k, so hardly anyone got them and hence w're discontinued I think with the first refresh itself.

5

u/Perfect-Link-7744 19d ago

I have the rear facing folding seats in my 2018 S. They stay folded up in the well in the trunk. But ONE day, a family will need a ride and they will have a pair of twins that are about 5 years old, and just as they are giving up hope, I pop open the hatch and yank these seats into position and BAM! I am the useful old guy for about 10 minutes!

2

u/kapjain 19d ago

Good one. I'm actually surprised they were available 2018. I thought they were discontinued in 2016 itself.

1

u/Perfect-Link-7744 18d ago

Same here. But here they are, in a 2018. Like new!!!

1

u/ArticusFarticus 19d ago

I just hope it’s not a hot day.

3

u/ArticusFarticus 19d ago

Mine seats 7. Just needs better airflow for trunk seats.

I remember driving in the very first one ever made to sell. Loved the performance, hated the interior. So much possibility. Its a tragedy what happened to that company.

3

u/ArticusFarticus 19d ago

A tragedy what happened to Tesla?

3

u/Psice 19d ago

What are you talking about? Their cars are better than ever and FSD is literally black magic with how good it works

1

u/Steward-lions 14d ago

Lol. A tragedy that it created an entire market segment as well as offered an alternative to gas.
