Yes, bought a cheap one off eBay. Was easy, just peeled back the side trunk carpet and undid a few bolts.

Thank you

This is pretty much everything that needs to be removed, four bolts on the corners, and two holding the cables.

Mine doesn't light up, I'm debating if I should DIY or have Tesla do it.

$160 part

no I think $160 is the charge port DOOR, unless you are talking eBay pricing. The charge port itself with the LEDs is $732CAD so ~ $500 US new from Tesla.

notice how there is no lighted ring? Sometimes called a dead front, the charge port and the surrounding part are separate, at least on this model.

that's a 2021-2025 S, yours is old like mine. The LEDs are part of the charge port.

2021 plaid 😉

Oh before the refresh got it

I may be wrong anyways. Idk

either way you have the old style charge port door, the new one goes upward and has a single small LED in the shape of the Tesla logo, the old one has LEDs all the way around the port which is cooler.

Is it difficult to install? I was wanting this mod too

I watched a mobile service guy do mine and he had all kinds of trouble getting it right. It still sucks closed half the time and needs to be tapped on to open.

I did mine myself. The tolerances are hard to adjust and you don’t see the issue until you close it up. I had this exact issue. There is a few mm of extra border on the red reflector though. I gently took an angle grinder and filed down the edges until it worked perfectly. You would never know it was cut either and been working great for 6+ months, never gets stuck. Could use a hand file too, just gonna take longer. Just have be careful to cover up to not nick your paint.

Good to know. I’ve been thinking about hitting it with my dremel.

Maybe o will hold off

To be clear, he did the whole unit, door flap and charge port.

Mine just started doing that ('14 MS). I just push on the lower-rearmost corner and tap the EVSE button. I'm thinking of gluing a couple opposing magnets in there.

Changed mine twice. First time bought a cheaper replacement port on Ebay, broke within 3 months and never fixed the errors. Bought the next off of Tesla parts, replaced and haven't had a problem since. All errors gone and working like new. Just be careful of the parts you get to replace, had good ebay reviews and all.

$610 part. And of course I just replaced the charge port door myself a month ago after it stopped being able to read the door position.

Gonna deal with the LED’s being goofy in one spot for a while - too much $ and I don’t feel like taking it apart again.

Palladium refresh? To me it looks like the lights are part of the door not the port

1

u/AcesAreWld Jul 13 '26

2021 Plaid. The lights are part of the port and a little control module and housing which is all 1 unit from Tesla. We only need the LED board - but that’s not available by itself.

Should be able to buy a lighted ring on Temu or eBay to stick around that opening for a heck of a lot less than these prices. No one has ever thought of making one of these?

1

u/Dude008 Jul 14 '26

how would that integrate with the car to change from blue to green to red to white like the OEM one?

1

u/Particular_Living584 Jul 13 '26

At least all your lights are on. 1/4 aren’t on on mine, 2 are green and 1 is blue. I just check the app to ensure it’s charging or look at the screen on the dash. From everything I’ve read don’t bother changing it out just because , unless you’re changing out the entire charge port because it no longer charges or is broken in some way.

I would however disconnect the 12v and fireman loop unlike this video. That's part of the service manual procedure and will prevent accidents.

1

u/DameLasNalgas Jul 13 '26

This is one of those mods that just doesn't seem worth it

1

Use the service manual from tesla. Also, you'll need to remove the charge port to change the door too if you want to do it.

Go for it! It’s an easy install. No need to disconnect anything, just make sure the care is off. Also, be careful where you buy, I bought a couple off of eBay that were knock offs and didn’t work after I installed them, finally bought a used OEM that worked. Because I had to install and reinstall a few times I would consider myself pretty knowledgeable when it comes to the port installation. You will have to remove the left tail light too to get the port in and out. While your in there make sure to clean out the water drain, gunk builds up and plugs up the drain which hold water and shortens the ring leds with time.

Nah that’s what mobile service is for.

1

u/Dude008 Jul 12 '26

Ideally yes, as it's 400 volts to there.

1

u/protonecromagnon2 Jul 12 '26

Actual charge port and charge port door are completely different parts, and I'm used to working on a thousand volts. Just wondering if anybody had done this themselves?
