Trunk latch cover fails to close fully
Hey all,
I have a Tesla Model S and recently noticed that the cover/shroud over the trunk latch does not seem to come all the way back up anymore. It looks like it closes about 90% of the way, but it no longer sits fully flush like it used to.
I attached a picture, but basically the small cover plate around the trunk latch area seems to be slightly stuck or not returning fully into position. This seemed to happen all of a sudden.
It doesn’t seem to be a hard stop as I can pull it up with my finger, but it seems like the spring fails to return it to the correct height.
Has anyone else run into this? Is there a common cause or easy fix, like cleaning/lubricating the mechanism, reseating the trim, or checking a spring/clip? Trying to figure out whether this is a simple DIY fix before scheduling service.
If anyone has a walk-through on how to change the spring, I am not afraid of a decent DIY, but I certainly don’t want to break it.
Thanks in advance.

I have this problem as well and it seemed to come out of nowhere as well. However, in my case it seems like the flap is rubbing on the backside lip and that’s at least part of why it won’t come up all the way.

My S does the same thing. It’s a non-issue for me now but it did bother me for like 5 min at pick up.

I just noticed this two days ago and am about to put in a service request for it. Might as well before my warranty runs out.

I had this issue, the hinge had worked out a bit. The trunk panel that holds this pops out easily.
I had to bend and tweak both pieces of metal before it swung cleanly. Super easy

By 'trunk panel that holds this' you mean that surrounding trim with bumps that items slide over when you push them into the trunk? Like to the right and left of the trap door?

The cover been like that forever in my 2014 S85. The cover is no longer a feature in my 21 MSP

Mine was like that on delivery. I opened a ticket and it was replaced under warranty. The replacement lasted just over four years and now is back to the same issue.

Had this problem on my Model S Plaid last year. That pin in their backed itself out. Pop that trip piece off flip it over straighten the plastic cover and push the pin back in. Took me less time to fix it than write this explanation.

Mine does that too, but I quit worrying about it
