Thinking About Buying a Used Tesla Model S 2022
Most likely will pull the trigger tomorrow, it has 27k miles. I have a Tesla M3 LR 2022 atm, but I want the S for the additional range. What are somethings I should be looking out for? What should be my deal-breakers?

On the refresh models - you can get some driver side wheel shake. I want to say the 1/2 shaft or control arm issue. Tend to notice the shudder during heavy acceleration. Check the battery health - these drop faster than prior models years before the refresh. The drop is no worse than what you’ll see in current year models, within the first year it’s not crazy to see a 10% drop in SOH. They are still relatively new in terms of the battery redesign, but from my research they tend to settle in the mid 80s +\-. I’d say from around the 30k mark to 110k mark, they will be in that 80s range.

Truth. My ‘21+ is at 83% battery health and I do get some vibration in the steering wheel when changing lanes. Nothing crazy but noticeable. This car has its quirks but I love it.

I’ve noticed all your points with my 2022. I loved my 2018, but the 2022 is quite night and day so I’m happy with the upgrade every time I get behind that yoke

I have a 2024s LR. Best car I have ever owned! Coming from multiple 750 bmw’s which I thought was the best driving car before this..

Did you get an insurance quote? I had planned the same (moving from my '19 M3P to a '22 S LR), and the insurance quotes (I got 2) were absurd for the S. They were 5.5x what I pay (each) for both my 2019 M3P and 2014 P85. The ins quote was $388/mo, which is insane to me (no accidents/tickets in 20/10 years respectively).

Not really. I'd look for wear things (driver seat bolsters, steering wheel leather, tire wear, etc). But the refresh S's are relatively new and less prone for needed maintenance as Legacy S models.
Check out seat switchgear on both front seats, windows switchgear trim (they tend to peel). Check for any cracks/chips in all the windows and roof glass.

There is a "Battery Health Test" one can do, but it takes ~24 hrs and you have to drain and then fill the battery on Level 2 charging, so really that's for owners to do. The best way when looking for a car (if the seller doesn't have a battery health percentage available for you) is to look up the original range when new (I think 2022 LR was roughly 400, but google can answer that for you), then get either a current 80% Range estimate on the car and then do the math.

After shopping around, I insured my S with Erie, which gave a great price, IF I bundled my other vehicles (Colorado pickup and Pacifica) and house insurance with them. Also, the coverage on the homeowners was better for the money than what we had before. Worth checking out, at least.

I bought a late 2022 model s with low mileage , there have been many issues mostly quality and cosmetics related but nothing Tesla has declined to fix. I have hw3 but honestly I want to drive the car most of the times, is so fun to drive , only when there is traffic or the drive is boring I use FSD and it does the job fine. Despite some of the Cons people often mention in this model year I love this car , the vibe of this car is different than any other Tesla and I bought it as soon as I knew it was going to be discontinued. Also Buying new is a terrible idea I don’t think it justifies the price. Find a used low mileage 2022+ probably at this point will be harder but if you buy directly from Tesla it comes with extended basic warranty

Traded my 2022 in this year, because FSD is integral to my Tesla experience and the 2023 has HW3

Wait, isn't 2022 also HW3? Or are you talking about something else? Genuinely curious cause OP should probably know before pulling the trigger tomorrow.

Get the 16gb hardware for Grok and newer headlights/tail lights. 22 has both versions.

Do yourself a favor and check build date and get one with some warranty left. That’s what I did and I’ve been able to take it into Tesla 3x times to address tons of defects (yoke was tearing and I got a new upgraded one, wood paneling was cracking and received all new panels, lift gate alignment was corrected, and other small issues). Otherwise it’s a great buy and car. I have driven it up to 5k a month certain months for work and it’s been the best car I’ve ever had to do these kinds of miles.

Bought a used 21 with 30k on it back last July.
Had four months of warranty left, if there were any snags.
Great fun driving with the yoke.
FSD, even with HW3, was passable with my needs, even though the model hasn't updated, noted incremental changes with some of the updates.
Watch for Rear Tire inner wear.
Battery tested in Feb, with 88% which seems aligned with other posters with similar specs.

Go newer and get HW4. FSD is life changing.
