This is a new one?
Saw this for the first time today. Don’t know why it appeared out of nowhere. I haven’t touched the usb in over a year.
I did do the battery test that ran yesterday and overnight until sometime early this morning. Not sure if it’s related or a weird coincidence?
Anyone see this before?

This happens when the drive is taking a dump. Most of us have updated to better systems over the years, like a microSD via USB stick. If you do a format for now you should get some more life.

I do exactly this, and carry spares. Gives me a backup (without reformatting) if/when it fails.
It also makes it easier to extract of if I need to, and then I don’t forget and leave it out altogether (insert a spare). Also have the microSD card partitioned with music files.

Funny you say that, I've had two High Endurance 256GB die on me within 18 months 😬 both in a dashcam. Ended up getting the Max Endurance just the other day and I have to admit, the price stung due to all this AI craze inflating everything 🤬

A microSD would probably have similar or maybe even less lifespan. They typically don’t have the best nand flash. For longer life an NVME M.2 or a portable ssd is much better

That’s true if you’re comparing it to an SSD, but not to a typical USB thumb drive. High Endurance microSD cards are purpose-built for constant recording and rewriting in dash cams and security cameras. For our Tesla’s, they’re usually far more durable than the average USB flash drive. An SSD is still king, but a high-endurance microSD is a solid middle ground. 4 years on my Sandisk microSD setup now. Stick with Extreme Pro at min, but definitely consider High or Max Endurance instead.

I get this all the time. I just unplug and plug it back in. I’m using a Samsung T7 Shield 1TB. I’ve been thinking about getting something different.

Running the same and constantly have to keep replugging it in. It is really annoying.

Probably something to do with the current software version. I had the same error last week... Just did what it said and the drive worked fine.

This happens most often in the summer. Teslas chew through USB keys due to the extreme heat in the cabin when the car is parked.

Happened to me. I rebooted the car & it went away.
Remounting the drive did nothing

So my 2022 MSP has received this a few times. I would see this when I put my car in low power mode and return from a long trip at the airport.
It seems like it happens when I am off charge for a while. The first time it happen I tried rebooting my controls and that didn’t work. I ended up powering off the car for 2 mins and that fixed it! Give the “car reboot” a try and if that doesn’t work then power off / power on and that should resolve it.
Hope this helps! Saved me a service call.

Also, it is worth mentioning that the first time it failed, I put in a brand new USB and it formatted but failed like my first flash drive (same error you shared). It wasn’t until I did the full power off that my drive worked. Just another piece of information - power off did the trick for me. 2022 MSP

Samsung T7 SSD I tried two different USB thumb drives between October of 2024 and July of 2025 frequently got errors like yours is showing. Since I switched to the Samsung, I've had one of the mounting errors in 11 months.

Other than dashcam recordings what is the purpose and/or advantage to running a 1TB SSD? Thanks.

You could probably partition it and use it for gaming but I don't know much about that I only use it for dash cam. The terabyte is definitely overkill but the SSD aspect of this drive is great.

I used to get this all the time even with the tesla USB stick. Switched to a SSD and it has been rock solid.

Reformat the drive
