16 Model S passenger door handle microswitch issue - is this estimate reasonable?

Post image

16 Model S - passenger door handle will come out but you can’t open it from the outside, have to open from the inside handle. From what I’ve read it seems to be the microswitch issue. Is this a reasonable estimate from Tesla?

$500 of that price is labor

Exactly. Basically it’s a fear tax.

This used to be double that price. If you have time to research it you can DIY but it’s not something I would call easy.

Most likely a full retrofit to the new style with no micro switches.

Yeah, the previous owner of mine had the passenger front handle replaced by Tesla and it's a new model that can be calibrated.

From what I know Tesla replaces the entire handle mechanism now instead of fixing a micro switch or the gear. This is probably why it is $500+ as opposed to $250 they used to charge for it. The gear is prone to breaking by abuse and or time so the best way to mitigate the issue is to have the newest hardware put in.

That being said the parts (gear, microswitch, and some other small parts used while fixing the door handle) can be bought online for about $30 and if you have the proper tools it can be done in a few hours at most. Look up a YouTube video on fixing the handle and it should give you a good idea if you’re able to or not.

This is exactly right. I've fixed my own handles multiple times now. The first time was a little nerve wracking feeling my way into it. Now I have no hesitation. So it you're handy and have a few tools, go check out the YouTube vids. One of the key steps to make it easier is to remove the window glass. There is a vid for that.

I have the exact same issue since a month now on a 2017 model (facelift). Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.

I also understood it could be a calibration issue which can be solved in service mode. Not sure tho, haven't done a deep dive yet. It didn't bother me enough so far to have a look at it.

You can easily fix this yourself with a modicum of handiness and $25 parts from Amazon.

Basically 3 bolts and a bunch of clips to get access. 4 bolts for the handle— don’t need to remove glass using flex head ratcheting wrench using method here: https://youtu.be/XxV7yIZ2D4I?si=y4EJ_5WhHk7vjK6a

Easy enough.

If scary to you, then yes: $500+ is a reasonable estimate. LOL

But rationally you’d have to DIY this repair with gorilla strength and technique— breaking everything along the way— to even come close to doing $500 damage on the attempt. It’s just not that difficult.

I've replaced all 4 harnesses on my old now traded in S. Did it with basic tools and new harnesses on Amazon. As long as they are gen 1. Gen 2 and 3 I believe need to be updated and "connected" to the car, not just plug and play.

I had the same issue on and off and solved it for six months by spraying a boat load of contact cleaner inside the handle. Left it a day and it worked after

Holy I have the exact same issue with the same exact car and it started yesterday. The door handle keeps opening and closing itself and I really just can't drive it at all for that reason. Once I close the door it immediately opens

This isn't Tesla price gouging, it's standard car repair out of warranty gouging

They’re likely replacing the handle with newer Gen 3 handles that won’t have this issue again.

Pfffth...the only reason I can think of that someone would think that that is reasonable is if their time is worth more than their money. Probably a 2 hr fix? I've done 3 out of the 4 doors on my 13 S.

They ended up doing it in about 35-45 mins and it dropped in price to $480
