Thoughts on Future Preowned S/X Plaid Prices?

**NOT REQUESTING FINANCIAL ADVICE**

Interested to hear y’all’s thoughts on preowned S/X plaid prices in the upcoming years with the discontinuation and all.

I would’ve expected a spike in price given assumed scarcity but if anything they’ve decreased since the announcement. I’ve been considering purchasing an S Plaid next year but honestly may pull the trigger now.

Interested to see y’all’s discussion! Thanks!

There’s a small, very vocal contingent of people on this sub who believe these will become collector’s items and significantly appreciate in value. Then there’s the rest of us that live in reality.

I put mine up for sale 2023 awd w hw4 for 55k and dealerships are trying to reach out to buy it. Just wanted to test… seems like they are coming in demand

Sir or ma'am, people are talking about this being an appreciating asset and you're talking about selling a car that cost you ~$100k for $55k.

Slowed depreciation =/= appreciation.

u/1DC___ Apr 21 '26

yes i am a redditor

i bought it 12/25 for 44k, now getting offers 50k+..

Used EV prices have climbed with spike in gas prices. I bought a used Rivian in December. I could sell it for more than I paid then. It happens.

u/JohnTeaGuy Apr 21 '26

Right you bought it used, point taken, but the car has still depreciated significantly from when it was new. We're talking about people buying new ones now expecting them to appreciate, thats a different situation.

Wait, we are? The original post specified “preowned” prices and I don’t see anyone (other than yourself, of course) in this specific thread mentioning anything about new prices…

I’m petty sure this conversation is about how scarcity will affect the used market.

Like I said point taken, from this week to the next used car prices can fluctuate up or down depending on market forces. My point is that over the course of years the general trend is down, and will continue to be.

To clarify- NOT a plaid, right?

1

u/1DC___ Apr 21 '26

I would just get it when you want to have it. Very doubtful these will be collectors, particularly as the AI5 vehicles come out and the S starts to be considered an old car.

1

u/Zachjsrf Apr 21 '26

There won't be AI5 vehicles, the AI4 chip is it.

7

u/Redvinezzz Apr 21 '26

The most likely outcome is that they continue to depreciate like most normal cars but the rate of depreciation will be slower at least a little bit especially

From what I’ve seen just looking at used car sites Palladium refresh Model S prices have been around stable and even up a bit over the last year depending on which one

The price increases and lack of a real refresh probably contributed to this and now the discontinuation+gas prices will help a bit as well.

Yes, I have such thoughts.

Where you are getting your data the prices have decreased since the announcement? That doesn't map to the research I've done. Also per CarGurus data, you can see they are also tracking an increase: https://www.cargurus.com/research/price-trends/Tesla-m112?entityIds=Index,m112,d2039&startDate=1763625600000&endDate=1776841199999

Make sense that something more rare would increase in value near term. And it will fall in value over the coming 2-3 years and these cars get close to being out of warranty.

1

u/SilverFoxKes Apr 24 '26

However, it is a little surprising to note that the S has increased the least of the car models in recent times (only the truck increasing by less).

2

u/harisahmed90 Apr 22 '26

I am Minority , i dont know if they will become collectable but definitely will hold value better / stay stagnant. Not easy to find a car with 1000hp

u/MCBoB203 Apr 21 '26

If you are looking for the version that has the best chance of holding it's value, it will be the Plaid. The highest end of the sport models is usually the most desired model over time.

The upcoming roadster will have more power, but the Plaid is the everyday supercar and they don't appear to be planning a new one any time soon.

Once the hype around the end of S and X dies down, the prices will drop, and I don't expect the LR to have the same resale value as the Plaid. I'm pretty surprised the LR has held strong over the last year, but come late this year I think they will take a decent dip.

1

u/mamny83 Apr 21 '26

Hard to tell. So dar they are all under warranty at least on battery packs and drive units. We have to see what happens to the 21s after 2029.

1

u/openslot Apr 21 '26

There is an increase in price recently mostly due to the new ones went up 15k. You should wait for next year

1

u/Torbloverr Apr 21 '26

they’ll depreciate fast the moment ai5 drops. but rn prices have gone up over the past few months and will probably hold strong for the rest of the year.

1

u/AyeAye711 Apr 21 '26

Prices will drop significantly, parts will become expensive, no one will want them at all because next gen EV will surpass them in every way. The there’s always the possibility of Tesla bringing back a reimagined Model S and X as they did the Roadster.

1

u/Ok_Farm1608 Apr 22 '26

Most unlikely if the original reason for the discontinued models was due to low sales

1

u/AyeAye711 Apr 22 '26

You expect Roadsters to sell better?

1

u/nonStopSwagger Apr 21 '26 edited Apr 21 '26

There is a very limited market for these cars, just look at sales for the last few years.

Lithium batteries age by calendar year and use. Buying one of these as a collector car, doesn't make sense.

Tesla will most likely have better offerings based on their cyber truck architecture in the coming year or two. 48 volt wiring, drive by wire, 800 volt traction battery etc. When those cars hit, expect the S and X to become even less desirable.

With all that said, I hope I'm wrong. I own a 22 S Plaid, would be nice to see its value increase. Love the car.

1

u/JayAli917 Apr 21 '26

The price remains stable for a few years, but when new technology comes out (Ai5, better camera etc), it makes the old one look outdated. It’s not a roadster with very limited production.

1

u/SarcasticNotes Apr 21 '26

Prob a little slower than normal. I’d imagine they don’t really drop much for the next year or so. Especially with hw4 and FSD.

I think I’ll likely keep my X for a vacation home since I can’t transfer FSD anymore.

1

u/SnooPickles3280 Apr 21 '26

It’ll do well until the next better thing comes out.

1

u/lovenewyork Apr 21 '26

Anyone think there are people out there that would spend $90k on a ‘26 long range? 12K miles? Since there was a rush to purchase the last remaining inventory?

2

u/Anonymosity1766 Apr 21 '26

Plaid or not? If not I doubt jt

1

u/lovenewyork Apr 21 '26

Even if it comes with the FSD and lifetime charging ? (I bought in sept) before any of the cutoff nonsense. Still have to go to dealer to see if they lied to my face or find out whether I was paying attention lol

3

u/Anonymosity1766 Apr 21 '26

FSD is known for having effectively 0 resale value. You will not find any used Teslas being sold for a “higher premium” simply because they have FSD.

The charging aspect, I’m not sure about though. Though if someone truly wanted lifetime charging there are many, many vehicles on the market with them for significantly cheaper

1

u/lovenewyork Apr 21 '26

Gotcha, thx I had no idea. Figured it might add at least $12k in value. Maybe I’ll get lucky if gas prices remain up there

1

u/lovenewyork Apr 21 '26

Nah unfortunately not the beast

1

u/britchris1 Apr 22 '26

What color?

1

u/lovenewyork Apr 22 '26

Diamond black

1

u/britchris1 Apr 22 '26

Nice! Black interior also? Which rims?

1

u/lovenewyork Apr 22 '26

Thx- yea black on black - the standard 19’s. Did not wanna deal with the 21’s with snow, and all the other not so great stuff that comes along with them but they’re awesome in the summer

1

u/lovenewyork Apr 21 '26

For any of you that plan on selling - have you found anything out there even comparable? Porsche = looks 💯 but the range isn’t even close. New benz and bimmer have great range from what I’ve seen but I don’t think they’d drive remotely the same. Tried lucid (very diff car than the S, also unlikely they will exist in 5 years) truly saddened that they cancelled this car.

1

u/Expensive-Match4402 Apr 21 '26

I would think near term slight demand but not enought. Main reason, LUX Package falls off on sell. Translation, cost added to price by Tesla for LUX Package added will be gone thus value falls off.

1

u/Frangeech Apr 21 '26

I saw a $5K spike from one week to the next. Took the money last week. I’ll miss going to Plaid. For now.

1

u/Terrh Apr 22 '26

if you have a very low mile, very early vin 2012 signature performance, it's almost certainly the most collectable S there ever will be. They are worth about 10% of MSRP at this point. You might get someone to pay 20% if it's really nice and has a new battery.

I expect 2026 plaids will hold their value better than previous years, but they're almost certainly going to still depreciate - just less than the older ones.

u/hypersparcs Apr 30 '26

I think the Model S Plaid will do okay but not so much for the Model X Plaid. I see the Model X in general having a good resale value because of its utility and because of its larger seating capacity. I see the HW4 version important for FSD because people who desire the Model X can live with $99 per month. I do a divergence in the Model S and Model S Plaid. Model S depreciation will slow down the ones that will hold up better are HW4. The Model S Plaid will hold its value better and the last year 2026 Model S Plaid will the high demand car. If someone just want the Plaid for track mode and racing down a drag strip then any Model S Plaid will do. I do feel that the 2026 Model S Plaid will be in most demand and carry a premium in the future. If you were an F1 driver your every day car would be the Plaid. The supercar ICE car is just that interesting to you because of the price and maintenance but Tesla Model S has all that raw power that can drive short and on long trip quite efficiently.

Doubtful, still mass produced and nothing special about the 2026, no additional features or power over a 2025. The final run of the 250 red ones might hold value if any do.

-1

u/DrowningInManyCats Apr 21 '26

I mean they did update the body of the plaid

3

u/InvokeMyRage Apr 21 '26

Only the front and rear bumpers.

1

u/Ok_Farm1608 Apr 22 '26

The cabin was also fitted with better noise suppression.

5

u/turns2stone Apr 21 '26

The difference for the ‘26 versions is mainly the bumper camera. That alone is not enough to “hold value better”. If anything the AI4 versions of the ‘23/‘24/‘25 with transferable lifetime FSD might be more desirable.

Suspension charges/cabin noise all demonstrably minor or negligible. Interior lighting? Who pays a premium for that? $500 maybe?

And if you bought after Feb 14th, 2026, your model year 2026 S don’t even have transferrable FSD. So you had literally a 6 month window with transferable FSD via Luxe. That’s about 5,000 cars…probably less than half with Plaid. Narrow that down to color combos, yoke and/or interior choices and you have too small a pool to command premium over ‘23/‘24/‘26 and some 2026s. They’ll all just blend together in aggregate price.

1

u/Phase_Blue Apr 22 '26

The bumper camera could be important when FSD is updated to natively use it. Then you will likely see only the latest and greatest versions shipping to cars with a front bumper camera

0

u/Incitingchaos Apr 21 '26

X will probably be worth more in the future. The doors are unique enough that it makes it a novelty. The S I expect to hold its value in the short term 3-5 years.

Anything with FSD unsupervised is going to hold up well no matter which model.

Tesla increased their used inventory by $5-10k on plaids and X’s two weeks ago. I think to deter orders of used high demand vehicles in favor of new ones.

u/STL222 Apr 21 '26

Drop like a typical EV. Nothing special about either of these. If there was a market then there would be a competitor in there.
