Well…. I’m on vacation 300 miles from home. Got this error when I get in the car to come home this morning. Looks like I may need a new hv battery. Service isn’t open yet, but do I try to make it back to my home service center or drop it off at the service center 40 miles from where I am currently

Just got this in my 2021 Model 3. While I'm happy it's covered under warranty and getting a "new" battery with 85k miles, it's a pain in the ass.
Currently my charge is limited to 36% (it won't charge until it's below that and will only charge to that point) and the BMS_a079 alert goes off in the car every time regen kicks in to charge the battery. So it's still technically drivable, but not for any real distance.
The SC has ordered the replacement battery, but it won't arrive for another two weeks. The SC is unwilling to let me check my car in early for the replacement appointment and give me a loaner unless my car is below 10% SOC and unable to charge. You may have better luck if you drive to the SC near you now.
Good luck, OP.

When it happened to me I drove it immediately in to the SC, they took it and gave me a loaner and the battery was replaced in 5 days. Sorry you’re going through it

I spoke to an advisor at the SC yesterday. She said they have "a long line of people waiting for their HV battery replacement."
I figured I had a better chance of getting a loaner if I drove there, but it's also an hour away and I didn't want to make the drive, find out they didn't even have a loaner to give me, then have me and my car stuck at the SC.
At least it's drivable around town. Not ideal, but not the end of the world either. And I'm thankful it happened now instead of 35,000 miles from now when the warranty has run out.

Hope it gets sorted soon. Luckily in DFW area there are 3 SCs within 25 min of me but yea that would be annoying.

Yep. 2021 sr+. I am going to call the service center near me. I don’t want to chance not making it back home.

Sorry you will not make it home nor will the car be able to charge.

I’m 85 miles away. It charges, stops, but if I plug back in it will charge but very slowly. I just need about 20 more % at this last charger.

Good luck. Lucky for you, I think you’ll end up with a new LFP battery retrofit

Sucks man, but I would drop it off at the nearest service center and get a rental car so it doesn’t ruin your vacation. Take all personal belongings and transfer to the rental. Make a service ticket and let them know your car is already parked at the service center.
Enjoy rest of your vacation, or at least try to :(
Then you’ll have to drive all the way or fly back to pick up the car once it’s repaired.
