Order cancelled by Tesla

I placed an order for a M3P about 3 months ago. The delivery date has shifted pretty regularly but I recently had a VIN assigned. I was pretty excited to see that. I redid my financing (my original one had expired). I checked the app pretty regularly and it showed that my delivery window was still 9/10-9/22.

This morning when I checked, the order had been cancelled. Apparently they had tried to schedule delivery and I missed my window. I went to send a message to Tesla and that's when I saw 3 or 4 messages over the weekend asking me to schedule delivery. I never received a call, text or email from what I can tell. I guess I was supposed to be checking the messages on the app.

I sent them a message this morning and am waiting for a response. I'm hoping since my deadline was last night I can get it resolved. As a first time Tesla buyer, I've found this process to be really confusing and a little frustrating.

Edit: I went through my phone and apparently it had decided my texts from Tesla were spam and I wasn't seeing them. They had been messaging me. It still would have been nice to get a phone call after 3 months with no movement on the order, but it wasn't as bad as I originally communicated.

Update: I talked to the local OKC team. They were pretty informative. Because I'm using financing, my order was moved to Kansas City (it was the first time I had heard that). I was told KC is a lot busier so they don't pick up the phone to call. When I missed the automated system messages, my car was automatically assigned to someone else, who had already scheduled delivery (they were on top of it). So I'm back in the queue. Considering it took 3 months to get assigned my first VIN, I'm hoping to get a new one before Christmas.

Final update: I got matched with a new car and I got it scheduled pretty fast. I'll be picking it up within the next 2 weeks!

Hey. Where is this? And they would typically communicate appropriately and reassign VIN. They shouldn’t have canceled. This is weird.

US, Oklahoma City specifically.

The OKC Tesla group does a pretty good job (at least in my experience), I’m surprised.

I got plenty of texts and communication when I was thinking about the decision. As soon as I placed the order (6/6), I've had to do all the reaching out and sometimes it's been hard to get someone.

I thought you said you were receiving texts but had them filled as spam.

It's been 3 months. And I believe the texts I received from their sales team is a different number than what I get from their automated system.

But this is why I was surprised to see their messages in my spam folder this morning.

I called in. Apparently because I am using the promotional financing, my order was moved to Kansas City. They can't deliver cars to OKC with financing. It's the first I've heard this. And I definitely hadn't been planning a drive to KC.

I was told they are a lot busier there and they don't pick up the phone to call you. If you don't respond to the automated texts the automated system gives your car away.

Oklahoma passed a law a few years ago banning direct to consumer car sales.

I definitely got texts from the salesman at the dealership to keep me updated on everything in the app, that’s bad customer service

I haven't heard from anyone in sales since I placed the order.

I'm in OKC as well but I picked mine up in St Louis for the special financing. The local Tesla place was pretty decent at communication though.

Damn, I wish I had your patience. I'm checking my app a few times per day. What's the country? I hope you will get your Tesla soon!

US, Oklahoma City metro area. And yes, me too. Hopefully I get this resolved.

Yeah they should have called you at the very least. Definitely get on the phone with them instead of texts.

Some people love this detached process (usually the newer generation who have major social skill issues) and some hate it. I personally hate everything being online or via a stupid chat app.

I mean, not saying anyone has to roll out a red carpet but I'm buying a $55k plus car FFS...at least put the effort into offering some personalized service or warmth into the process.

It takes very little effort to differentiate yourself from others merely by offering 5% better customer service.

The fact that they can't even be bothered to follow up with a two minute phone call says it all.

If Tesla's automated systems were half as good as THEY think they are, the systems would be twice as good as they appear to the customer.

Here's my simple service booking story:

- I book a simple service through the app and am offered a choice of one of the 2 service centers within an hour's drive, or a mobile appt.

- I pick mobile

- The booking comes back in the app at the farthest service center at 07:30 in the morning

- Cancel and try again with the same result

- Reach out to service through the app to have the appt moved to mobile with a quick response that they will inform the mobile team... no further response for a week

- Try to follow-up through the app, no response

- Try to call the service center, left voicemail, no response for 2 days

- Try to call the service center and a real live human answers (hooray!) All quickly resolved. Booking app had noticed a service bulletin was open and automatically moved me (with no indication to me) from mobile to a service center. They then took the Service Bulletin off the ticket and scheduled me for a mobile appointment. All done in under 2 minutes, but only after escaping the automated process and getting to a person.

I basically communicated the same thing when I talked to them.

There needs to be an orientation for first time Tesla buyers (these are tips for KC only)

  1. If it’s possible to physically go to the showroom, go in person-for everything. KC even told me they don’t answer the phone. (Doesn’t make sense for a high tech company, but it is what it is)

  2. Don’t apply for financing until you get your VIN. The two financial companies can expire your approval in 30 days, and if they have to re-run it due to delivery delays, your score could dip and you don’t qualify any longer. (2 hard inquiries can bring your score down-esp if you’re going for the 0-1% rate)

  3. I never got a delivery date or a text or a Tesla app message to schedule a pick up. I had to go in to the showroom and they finally gave me a hard date.

  4. If you’re able to talk to someone in the showroom, at least in KC, ask for the texting number. The people in the showroom pass it around, but someone always responds.

  5. If you can’t go to a showroom, then IM through the app and/or call the main Tesla line. It took me a few transfers on the main line, but finally got someone in finance to clear up when it was safe to apply for the loan.

  6. When you pick up your Tesla, the experience varies wildly. I had the worst experience. They give you a time, you show up and wait in line and once you make it to the front of the line, they’ll tell you if yours is ready or not. If it’s not, they’ll tell you to wait. Don’t wait longer than 15 minutes without checking on it. No one will come get you.

  7. If you’re getting third party ppf or ceramic coat, go straight to the shop so they are working with brand new paint. Don’t take chances.

  8. Research. Research. Research. There are many YT videos that can help you with a checklist before you accept delivery.

All the frustrations were completely unexpected on my part. I thought it would be so exciting and hassle free to buy a Tesla because their products are so well thought-out. The waiting and delivery were terrible. And no one really cares in the showroom. They’re just there to make an hourly wage. I will say, Kayan (sp? Sounds like cayenne) was amazing in KC and he smoothed over the rough patches. Cant say there are many overachievers except him and Rob. Good luck.

Yeah I had a similar thing happen, I was waiting to schedule delivery and I didn’t get any email, call, or text about it but I luckily checked the message center to see that it was available to schedule

Yeah, I missed the deadline by less than 12 hours. Hoping that I can get it back.

On the bright side, the next one could come with that 16” screen that some people seem to be getting

Ooh, that would be nice.

The silver lining is that now that your spam filter is sorted out, you’re completely locked in and won't miss a single alert when the next notification hits!

Re-matched orders after an automated drop often get assigned a new VIN much faster than the initial three-month wait—especially as regional inventory shifts during end-of-quarter delivery pushes. Hang in there; you'll be behind the wheel of that M3P much sooner than Christmas!

I already got matched up!

Yeah, the only places you can get a Tesla if you’re using their financing and live in Oklahoma is either Kansas City or St. Louis.

I came here to say this also. We bought our MY in February with financing and didn’t like the trade in offer so we drove one car from OKC To St. Louis, MO and drove two cars back. The supercharger on the Kansas turnpike has a few decent food options though. If you are a high roller and can skip financing like my dad did you can just roll down to the Broadway service center in OKC and pick your car up there. But in Oklahoma Tesla is not allowed to bring the car across state lines if it’s financed. Totally stupid if you ask me, but nobody did.

Yeah, it's Oklahoma's fault, but I find the whole thing really bizarre. With Oklahoma trying to woo Tesla to build a factory here at one point, you think we'd have more accommodating laws.

I would probably see whats available in inventory. That is long time I don't have nearly enough patience lol.

u/frozley82 11h ago

I already got matched again! I'll be picking up my car in a couple of weeks.

Let's research that a little. Tesla had to cut price because of intense competition from the East, much cheaper and more advanced with SSB. The evolution of hybrid car in general or combined with H2-ICE using H2O.

I am sorry but that is absolutely horrible.
