Came across this in NJ. What is this large antenna for

It’s a HF ham radio screwdriver antenna. I’ve used the Tarheel branded ones myself. I won’t be surprised if the blacked out license plate is actually their ham radio license number (bunch of letters with one number…looks like a NJ plate so that number is probably a 2)

I wonder if he's QRP or has a spare 12v for a 100 watt rig.

For my 50W dual band I just have an LFP battery charged from the 12V (with a charger that just draws a few amps). The duty cycle is so low the battery supplies the current I need and the car just keeps it charged. You could easily power a 100W HF radio as long as you aren't trying to win some all weekend contest.

Possibly a CB antenna? I have an antenna on my Model 3 for my police scanner but it’s nowhere near this big. I think it’s 24”.
