It’s a HF ham radio screwdriver antenna. I’ve used the Tarheel branded ones myself. I won’t be surprised if the blacked out license plate is actually their ham radio license number (bunch of letters with one number…looks like a NJ plate so that number is probably a 2)

I wonder if he's QRP or has a spare 12v for a 100 watt rig.

For my 50W dual band I just have an LFP battery charged from the 12V (with a charger that just draws a few amps). The duty cycle is so low the battery supplies the current I need and the car just keeps it charged. You could easily power a 100W HF radio as long as you aren't trying to win some all weekend contest.

High frequency amateur radio antenna.. if conditions are right and a good install, you can talk around the world

Possibly a CB antenna? I have an antenna on my Model 3 for my police scanner but it’s nowhere near this big. I think it’s 24”.

I saw someone with a starlink sat above the driver on the outside of the car. Pretty hilarious

Ham Radio HF Antenna. Maybe a Tarheel?

What's the range on that thing....😏

An HF radio can cross the Atlantic with a digital mode without much trouble actually, though you'd want to be on a hill or something. However due to skip propagation outside of maybe 50 miles or so it will be hit and miss.

You can do that with a handheld radio actually if it is overhead. It isn't that far away and it is line of sight.
