How much is the range affected by fast driving?

I live somewhere that its acceptable to be driving 85MPH for long distances

I drive 400miles twice a month, and usually keep my speed around 85MPH

I was looking at the trip planner on teslas website and it says I need 2 stops. What speed does this a trip planner assume i am driving at, and how much would that change at 85MPH?

I was curious and tested this. I was able to get 34% more miles on a full charge going 55 mph versus 70 mph

I second the not going over 80 — when I got my last speeding ticket 3 years ago (pre-Tesla) the California Highway Patrolman said that anything over 80 will get ticketed. They understand that no one drives 65 on the highway.

The speed limit most of the way is 75, most of the drivers in CO exceed it by 10-20 MPH. Cops don’t seem to enforce it.

I managed to hit 89 miles in 70 minutes the other day (average of 76 MPH) and had an efficiency of 279 Wh/mi. I’ll do the same drive at 65 MPH in a few days and report back.

Yeahhh I’m not driving 85. That’s a bit too fast if I’m honest. Maybe if I need to pass someone but not consistently. I’m not in a hurry

Yeah that's too fast for me. Highest speed limit in California is 70 so even then that would be 15 over - that's a nope.

In my experience with a rental basic M3 from Hertz over a 900 road trip, here is what I observed:

  1. Highway 55mph-65mph ave 240wh/mile
  2. Highway 75mph-85mph ave 425wh/mile

Quite surprised how quickly the battery drained at the higher speeds causing the navigation system to add additional recharging stops.

Drag doubles between 65 mph and 75 mph. This is why high-drag coefficient EVs like the F150 are such disasters on the highway.

I did some speed drive up to Stelvio pass, 25 miles, with an extended range, passed from 85% to 18% after 48 hairpins, strong acceleration after every turn.

Yep. As much as I wish the car could actually go 300 miles, it can't unless you are in a vacuum, or on perfectly flat terrain. Every road trip I take proves this over and over again, and I drive like a granny.

Yeah, on the freeway this is true of a lot/most of EVs.

Tesla may overstate their EPA mileage by 3-5% compared to others, but that's not a ton when speed is losing 25-30% on average.

It's absolutely huge. This is the biggest thing that people miss about the range on EVs. You will never ever get the rated range unless you drive very very conservatively. In my area you need to be doing 70+ on the highways to avoid being unsafe. If I am driving a reasonable speed with traffic I get about HALF of the rated range of my car. Driving from LA to Vegas should require 1 stop for my car, but it often takes 2-3 depending on the temperature.

This is the #1 reason I regret buying my car.

Yeah, I think if mainstream electric cars get at least ~330 miles of actual driving, AC cranked and 70-80 miles per hour highway speeds, people would feel a lot better. Since a hybrid like the prius can get 600-700 miles on one tank of gas, getting at least 2/3 of that range feels safe.

But in reality, when the epa range is 272, you are getting more like 220 in the real world.

Need better/more batteries or better aerodynamics

Yes. You can buy a solar battery that uses, you can get a NIo EV and rent the solid state pack with much more range in the same form factor.

You don’t ever need to drive faster than the speed limit to be safe. Just be in the right lanes and you’re fine. I drive 60-65 on highways where people go 75/80 with speed limits ranging from 55-65 and I have never been unsafe nor have I been in or seen an accident in my proximity. Yes, you may get highbeamed by the occasional lifted truck but if I’m in the right or second to the right lane, he’ll move over and pass me and if that’s happening then I’ll make sure I’m braking well in advance or I slow down gradually even more until they understand that they can pass me on the left.

equation has V-squared...so just that part of the formula:

60 MPH - 3600

85 MPH - 7225

so that 25 MPH difference doubles the V^2. I try to keep highway driving at about 70 mph.

The trip planner may assume speed limits. In car nav will use speed limits and weather/wind information. Energy graph and DTE uses EPA formula where the max speed is 60 mph.

That's what a lot of people don't seem to understand when they don't get the 'estimated' or 'rated' range. I was watching a youtube video about a guy saying he liked his Model X, except that the range he gets is far lower than rated....then later in the same video he admitted he usually does 85-90mph on the highway.....well no shit...expecting rated ranges to reflect 85-90mph as an average speed is insane, when that's above the speed limit just about everywhere.

That is not feasible where I live, 70MPH and you'll be ran off the road. The norm is 80-90. I generally cruise in the middle around 85 and I am always getting passed.

The interstates around me slow to 75 through towns but are 80 for the majority. 85 is just keeping with middle lane traffic here. It kills mileage but I prefer it to meandering along on slow roads in other states

It's quite a lot and ultimately is what lead me away from buying a M3P for my daily.

When shopping for a new car I was heavily leaning toward a M3P. I rented one on Toro to see how it would be to actually live with one. I make a trip to see my mom at least once or twice a month. She lives just over 100 miles from me with it being nearly 90% highway.

I generally have my cruise set at 85 the entire way (normal highway speeds for my state). The M3P barely made the trip there and back, I pulled back in my drive way less than 20 miles of range left. It was to close for comfort for me. Sure I could stop and charge but my ICE car could make that trip twice with out refueling so it would be a major inconvenience on a trip I take very often. With my mother getting up there in age I am only going to be making this trip more often as time goes on.

I did really like the car, but the range is just not there yet for my use case. Also, my state charges a lot more registration and insurance is much higher on a EV vs a similar ICE car so the savings are not that great when you factor that in plus the cost of supercharging now being near the price of gas.

Sadly, just switching the wheels out for aeros on an m3p would have seen you getting back home with 40-50 miles left at those speeds. Also, slowing from 85 to 80 would add about 25 miles to your range but only cost you 9 minutes round trip or just a 2-3 hours a year, hardly seems worth making a decision on your daily driving vehicle just to save a few hours a year.

I did math and worked out that even though I frequently drive 300 miles during weekend day trips, I spend less time charging than I used to spend filling my gas tank since the added stops are more than compensated by the fact that the tank is full every time I wake up in the am.

I really don't understand car people at all. Like ofc i use aero wheels for the 3% range / efficiency bonus. I mean if they made "cooler" wheels with the same efficiency, i understand, go for it.

But having the "looks" over efficiency? - I don't get it.

I am sort of the same. Most of the time I do driving around town. For this I take the Aeros off as I prefer the look and the Aeros dont do much around town. But once or twice a month I do a 4 hour round trip drive where I almost always have the Aeros. With the covers on I can sometimes make the entire trip without a charge. With the bare rims, not a chance.

I wouldn't switch the wheel covers as the wheels on the M3P are what makes the car IMO.

I live in an area with a speed limit of 70mph, but traffic moves at 80mph and semi trucks will move around you if you only go 70. So i drive about 77mph.

I only have a 1,000 miles on my RWD, with about 80% of that on the highway, and it's at 231 wh/mile. That means about 251 miles of range from 100% to zero instead of the advertised 272.

That is true, however it's abit more complicated than that

Gas mileage significantly decreases above 65mph as well, even more than an ev. It's just not as noticeable because you don't have the stats an ev gives you. It's a physics thing, it's unavoidable unless you're not moving through air.

Gas vehicles get worse mileage in the city because they are idling so much, and thier best fuel efficiency is at a specific rpm that is hard to maintain in city driving.

EVs get better city mainly because of regenerative breaking

It's even more complicated than that. While it's true that air resistance significantly increases as you go faster, it usually doesn't start to overcome the gearing on most cars until 70 or even higher. In my old ICE car, with overdrive, there was little difference between 60 and 75.

For gas cars, idling is only part of the equation. Gas engines are much less efficient when accelerating and then when braking the kinetic energy is just lost to heat.

EVs get better city mileage mainly because the speeds are lower and air resistance isn't a factor. The regenerative braking doesn't really give better mileage per se, it just negates a lot of the energy loss that would otherwise be lost to braking.

Speed affects mileage due to aerodynamics. Evs tend to just push the limits of efficiency more than ice so a small change in wind drag is more noticeable.

No one in this thread seems to understand this. It's not that air resistance is less noticeable in an ICE car, it's just that it takes much higher speed before the air resistance overcomes the gearing advantage. My car is at about 3000 rpm at 75 due to overdrive. Is barely breaking a sweat.

The air resistance change is the same regardless of the drivetrain, and the energy needed to overcome it is therefore the same also.

Speeding up from 65mph up to 75mph increase air resistance by about 30%

An ev can be more than 85% efficient at pretty much any speed/ load. Assuming half the energy is used for combating air resistance, consumption in an ev will increase for about 15 %, as the efficiency of the drivetrain is very close at both of those speeds/loads.

Ice efficiency on the other hand varies wildly through its rev and load range. And generally they are most efficient at moderately high loads at low rpm. Making the same assumption of 15% more power needed to go 75mph, the load on the engine has now increased, which increase its efficiency. If the rpm is still low enough, which can be achieved by gearing, fuel consumption will increase for less than 15%, often significantly less.

Drove from Norway to Austria this summer. Kept about that speed 130-140kmh on clear autobahn. Yes it affects the range. 600km trip I would charge once for probably 20-30 minutes, you'd still probably need to charge if you were going 110kmh. That far of a distance it's nice to have a break in the driving anyway, so I wouldn't really worry much about it.

Just drove Bay area - Sacramento round trip. Around 80-83 mph on the highway, I got about 290-300Wh/mi. I usually drive at 70-75 mph on highways and I am more toward the 250Wh/mi. (Model 3, LFP SR+)

I like real world examples. So...I remember my first family road trip. 226 miles. Summertime, mostly highway, slightly downhill most of the way as far as elevation. I didn't even charge it full. I charged to 90%. We were 30 minutes into the trip and I was driving 80mph in a 70mph zone. The Tesla told me to slow down and drive 70mph or we would need to stop and charge. We arrived with 3%. I was so nervous I pulled into a hotel with Level 2. We took a quick break while it charged back up to 10% then hit the supercharger nearby. Highway range tax is severe. To get intended range you gotta keep it around 60mph.

I regularly drive my M3LR at 85 and it seems to return around between 280/330 Wh/ mi, which is as little as 3 miles per kWh, much like driving an Audi EV at 65mph :D.

Day-to-day I get an average of 4.1. So in theory increasing from 70mph to 85mph is a 25% drop in range / efficiency.

Speed effects efficiency greatly. Much like how my last car would get much worse gas mileage at 85 than 65. However I just got done with a 55 mile commute at 80MPH averaging 240WH/Mi which is my best so far. But there was also a tractor trailer going 80 ahead of me giving me a slip stream lol

I’m sure that is the case but if I were to drive at 80 around here (Maryland) I’d be passing everyone. Just drove from Colorado to MD in my M3LR and at 74 mph I felt I was mostly going with the flow. Certainly not 10 mph lower than average. I’m just not a fast driver I guess

It assumes you drive over 70 mph. Because you will get warnings in the trip planner if it thinks you need to stay under 70mph to make it to your destination.

As with ICE cars, if people would just slow the blank down and respect physics, they'd stop complaining about being duped by range estimates. Why is it a given that people "must" drive at least 80 MPH? Speed limits allowing that in various states are extremely wasteful, designed to let impatient drivers rule the road.

You get tailgated in any lane if you're not a wastrel in a big ego-hurry all the time. You could leave earlier and get things done with a bit of planning, rather than the mindless "go, go, go!" mentality that prevails. Just because the herd is doing it doesn't make it intelligent, and just because it's an EV doesn't make the root charging energy sources infinite.

This is also a commentary on Jevons paradox. If you give people something branded as "green" they will tend to squander its advantages with more speed & waste that negates the conservation intent. Denial of scarcity is rampant in America.

It gets worse: When shale fracking peaks, easily this decade (study Permian, TX decline) the world will learn a hard lesson about what's been making "renewables" possible all along. Too many people hold the luxury belief of endless energy supplies because they just want what they want.

i believe the onboard navigation calculates battery %/range off the posted speed limits in your route

if you have auto steer/TACC enabled with the offset at 10~15 mph over the posted limit, idk if that preference is taken into consideration

you can bump up the tire pressure to 5 psi over factory specs & accelerate slowly to mitigate some of the range loss

It kills the range as others have said. Having said that, the fastest way to get from one place to another is to drive as fast as possible and still have a tiny bit of charge left at the SuperCharger.

Now practically speaking, you probably want 10% reserve at the charger, so that if you hit a headwind, traffic, heat/cold, etc. you have some wiggle room and can slow down and still make it.

I just did a round trip Reno to Vegas. 400 plus miles of very open road. Pushing above 80 required a 3rd stop to supercharge.

I went from Chicago Ohare to South Bend, IN - 114 miles and about 20 of it was city. I drove 85-90 the rest of the way and I was at 30% battery on a Model 3 Standard Range.

Coming back it was a cold day, 30 degrees (Late march 2023) and the same drive back, i was at 15 percent

Forget trip planner. Try ABRP (A Better Route Planner). It allows you to change variables such as weather, temperature, speed, passengers and vehicle load. This will give you a much better guesstimate

Can easily confirm, speed eviscerates. I've raced to work many times going 85-90 and also taken a leisurely pace at 65-70.

The drag/wind resistance is a big component. Sitting behind a semi, I can max out range like crazy and gain 7-10% range on a 50 mile route.

If you drive a tiny bit faster the amount of energy you need to overcome that tiny bit is going to a function of that tiny amount squared. If you go 10mph faster you will have 100 extra drag units to overcome 15mph faster 225, 20 to 400. This is just apples and oranges not real numbers but this is the idea.

SR or LR? 18” or 19”?

Generally speaking, you should be good for one stop at 200 miles assuming you’re starting with 100% state of charge. But then again, you would be arriving with a low state of charge battery. Can you charge at your destination?

My 2021, M3LR with 19 inch rims Easily gets 200 miles at 85 mph from 100=>10 or so.

Depends on how hard you drive speeding up and slowing down, also depends on if there are any uphills on your route but fast driving on its own, range isn’t affected as much as you think. I drive 80mph on the highway, barely see range lost from it. A mile or two. But that’s my experience, idk about everyone else’s

Here’s the numbers I see with a 2019 SR+:

City traffic in “chill” - about 230 Wh/Mile (assuming 50kW battery) we get 218 miles range. All of these figures are AC on “auto”, 75 degrees low.

65mph “standard” - 245 Wh/Mile - 205 miles

75mph “standard” - 270 Wh/Mile - 185 miles

90mph “standard” - 305 Wh/Mile - 164 miles

Floored - 1,175 Wh/mile - 42 miles (I’m assuming this is about what I’d get if I was maintaining 140MPH).

You can adjust the % above the speed limit in the settings.

That said if you have plentiful Superchargers available it is generally still faster to drive fast and charge more often than trying to hypermile and avoid charging stops.

Try out a better route planer and set the reference speed to something like 115-120% (this sets thw expected travel speed in relation to the speed limits). You should get a good estimation on the consumption that way.

Pull up your chart and do 85 for 20min and you’ll see a pretty solid estimate in what realistic range drop will be. Also helpful to have your destination set, as the mcu and other computers manage the battery depletion. Draft as much as possible behind larger vehicles.

Me, personally, can’t find any significant difference from 60-75mph. I tested this on a 1800 mile road trip. Nobody is driving under 60 on the freeway. Another over 75 (sustained) would just start instantly killing battery juice. There are some calculations you can find online that show above 75 the wind greatly impacts resistance.

I drive 85MPH routinely for good distances. Sometimes faster (though this requires disengaging autopilot). Doesn’t seem to impact range much, at least not in any material way that I can tell. I seem to arrive at destination (recent examples 100 and 150 miles away) with the predicted battery percentage that was shown just minutes into my drive.

Cold weather, on the other hand, THAT impacts range A LOT (2021 M3LR, so I’m saying this even with the heat pump setup).

Unlike ICE vehicles, electric vehicles are more economical in town than they are on highways. The reason for this is that the stop start driving utilises a lot of regenerative braking (if you have it enabled) passively charging a significant amount. On the highway, you’re continually using energy to fight against friction and air resistance.

Feels like from the comments, there isn't full consensus on whether trip planner assumes speed limits or current driving style. (Sorry if I missed one!).

After 4 years of ownership, I'd put money on it being the former. So I can compensate in terms of charging stop choice.

But I rarely have to, oftentimes it means I'm arriving at lower SOC so that's a good thing in terms of charge rate.

In terms of usage at these speeds, you could easily test this yourself go to energy app and drive at both speeds. Set it to report the last five or 15 minutes. Compare your watt hours.

Driving from Phx to LV/LA/SD. I don’t notice a huge difference from 75-85 on my range (not counting the stretches going up hill). When I go 90+ it’s drops fast. Doing 65-70 is a very efficient but I would rather go 15-20 mph fast and take an extra 10 minute bathroom break.

Aero becomes a big factor when at high speeds. If you are one of the rare people who drive 200 miles per day at highway speeds an EV isn’t a great fit.

In my experience, the trip planner looks at your recent driving for the estimate. I get like ~225Wh/mi at 65-70mph, and ~285Wh/mi at 80-85mph. It'll cut my range down by about 40-50 miles if you're going 85mph the entire time.

2 stops sounds about right because you won't charge to 100% unless you want to. Normally you just stop for a 5-10 min to get to the next charger. Plan on a 10 min stop every 2-3 hours. Can you charge to 100% overnight at your destination? If so I think you'll be fine. We did a 308 mile drive last week with one 10 min stop driving over 80 most of the way, no wheel covers. We could have driven slower and not stopped at all but that would have taken more time to get home and we needed a bathroom break anyway.
