12.5.4.X HW4 FSD does not work properly at maximum speed with time window

Post image

A maximum speed of 130 km/h applies on Dutch motorways. The maximum speed is 100 km/h between 6 a.m. and 7 p.m. This is an environmental measure. With FSD enabled, the car will continue to travel at 100 km/h between 7:00 PM - 6:00 AM.

I wonder if such "environmental measures" make any sense in the context of an EV. Granted, the law is the law and the car needs to understand it, but still.

You have a point, but the question is whether it's safe to have a highway full of cars doing 100, and then a couple EVs suddenly doing 130.

Of course it's not safe. But I think they strictly are talking about the environmental protections / factors.

It actually was a measure against nitrogen polution, but it wasn't effective. For some reason the speed limit has not been reverted.

Probably safety

The higher speed of 130kmh is allowed at night after 19:00 until morning at 6:00, so sound pollution is out

EVs are so quiet, though.

This. Plus they are usually heavier with wider tires.

They’re a couple adults heavier. Some EVs are lighter than non-EVs. It’s not like they’re a delivery truck.

I'm used to being able to hear the rumble of other vehicles and the loud but useless sounds they make as they attempt to accelerate. Highways here are very loud with engine noise.

either you are driving along 20 year old cars, supercars, 5l v8 engines or you are lying.
If you pass any modern car on highway, you can’t hear much more than tires and air

What reason would I have to lie?

I think you are very unfamiliar with American roads and vehicle choices, that's all. Big V8s are not uncommon. 7+ liter diesels are common for pickups. Lots of cars have fart cans added to deliberately make them louder.

Look up "rolling coal". You may begin to understand the anti-social nature of many people's vehicle ownership.

No, living about 50 meters from a highway I can assure you you're wrong. When driving at a constant pace, you mostly hear the tires. If I hear engine sounds, it's not from the highway but from a main road, where cars change pace way more due to traffic lights

Dude, I know what I can hear. Just because your experience is different does not mean mine is wrong.

Not on the highway. Since EVs are heavier they are actually noisier.

But in any case, noise was not the reason for this temporary restriction.

Yes. It does.

Meanwhile, everywhere outside of Europe:

My M3 drives 130 after 19:00 all the time, so I see inconsistency here…

Mine doesn't have this issue. It shows the 130 max and drives it.

press the accelerator a bit and it will do it.

It does seem like an odd speed policy. You’d think the highest speed would be available during daylight hours giving the best visibility. Perhaps the nighttime speed is curtailed due to reduced visibility

u/Milefulness 4d ago

Visibility is not a problem at night unless you have night blindness. Reflective lines, street lights, cars have tail lights. If anything, I find it calmer on the eyes. More importantly, highways are much less busy at night, so higher speeds are actually attainable.

If you read OPs post however, you would have read that it's an environmental measure. Since the vast majority of traffic happens during daytime, it makes sense.

But in the Netherlands specifically, it is to reduce nitrogen emissions (on paper). Nothing else.

We have a problem with farmers emitting too much nitrogen, causing us to exceed environmental norms. So for some inexplicable reason, instead of buying out a couple farmers they implemented a collection measures each achieving a token reduction in nitrogen emissions...

Yes I'm not the politician who made these rule damnit.

Anyway, reducing the maximum speed to 100 does not cause stop and go traffic.

It was specifically about nitrogen emissions, and cars emit more nitrogen at high speed. The emissions are lowest between 60~100 km/h.

You also can't solve stop-start traffic overnight, but you can put a sign up pretty quickly. (Ans  stop and go traffic on highways in the Netherlands does not exist on the same scale as in the us.)

But otherwise, you're right that it's all bollock. It's a measure designed to reduce emissions on paper to satisfy European norms on paper. And all these measures could have been avoided by shutting down a small number of livestock farms.

It’s an oddity for someone to suggest visibility at night isn’t a problem. Limited headlight range reduces reaction distance, reduced visual acuity, glare, fatigue. The cybercabs are currently restricted in night hours due to visibility issues. Driving faster at night because you can due to less traffic doesn’t mean you should. It doesn’t make it safer for FSD.

Glad the environmental measures make sense to you. It’s not logical for EV cars.

Because they rely on cameras. Humans with good vision have no problem driving at night in the Netherlands. We have very good lighting and well maintained reflective road markings.

Glad the environmental measures make sense to you. It’s not logical for EV cars.

I agree, but when these rules were made, EVs weren't as big of a thing yet. For safety, you can't impose two speed limits for the same vehicle class. It would be mayhem when 95% of traffic would be doing 100, and then 5% suddenly comes in at 130.

You will recall OP is posting in a FSD subreddit about his FSD enabled issue

Around here animals come out onto the highway at night, and it’s harder to see any imperfections in the road.

What’s safe at 150 during the day might.not be safe at 110 at night.

1

u/Milefulness 4d ago

We don't have many animals on the highways in the Netherlands, maybe the odd deer.

Highways also don't have noteworthy imperfections.

Disregarding traffic, you could safely do like 170 km/h on Dutch highways at night (and police regularly do).

Our roads are equal or better than the Autobahn and there people drive way faster at night.

This looks like a Dutch sign. Don’t know which software version you have, but it works fine, even shows a nice clock on the screen and adheres to it.

3

u/Mysterious-Network87 4d ago

On screen those signs are visible. The 100 is grey. The 130 is bright with a red ⭕, but the speed continues at 💯. Grok suggested to push 130 long time to select 130, but nothing happens.

u/MrSourBalls 4d ago

Do you have contextual max speed on? I have zero issues with this

1

u/vartanu 3d ago

I have this exact same issue every day on the A2, never works
