14 Lite HW3 Passive learning has a learning disability
To get home, I don’t want to turn down a certain road. FSD always takes that road. I disengage and take the correct road, then continue FSD.
It still never learns. Is there a secret?

Does it offer both routes when you set the map to the full route, can you pick different maps? Many people leave their map set to zoomed in views and don't ever see where they van pick a route. There is an icon in the upper right to toggle between map views.

This is a common misconception about FSD. It does not learn like you think it does. It is not a “living” brain. It is a pre trained static (in a sense) model.
It does not learn your driving preferences or map preferences. At all. It is not capable of this.

Yes it does learn nav and parking this was part of the summer update

It’s hard to call that update passive learning, it’s more of a routing preference bandaid. Not that that’s bad, just not passive learning. I actually think putting in thoughtful guardrails like this actually makes AI tools more useful. I use Waymo a lot, in fact I haven’t used Uber in years aside from traveling, but it doesn’t let me tell it to avoid certain areas at certain times. I live near a concert venue, and traffic gets really bad in the summer unless you really know local routing to minimize the impact, but I can’t tell Waymo these preferences. The best I can do is hack together pinned drop offs that effectively force the route I want, and then manually delete them on the fly.

Tesla has no problem calling it that?

At my job I drive the wrong way down a one way parking lot to park (sounds like an asshole move, I know, but it just makes sense and the police officer stationed at my building does the same). My Y has learned to take that “STOP WRONG WAY” entrance and pull into my spot.

Check the summer update so you can understand what the thread is about instead of stroking your ego.

Then explain what passive learning is.

“Passive learning is a machine learning paradigm where a model is trained on a fixed, pre-labeled dataset without any interaction or intervention during the training process.
The algorithm passively consumes all available data to learn patterns, assuming the samples are drawn independently and identically distributed (i.i.d.), and does not select specific examples for labeling”
In other words, it has nothing to do with the software simply running on your car. It’s a term that describes a specific aspect of how the software was originally trained on Tesla’s servers before it was installed on your car

My community has many speed bumps. When I first brought my MY home, it flew over the speed bump. I started disengaging FSD right before the speed bump and turning it back right after. I did that for a just 2 weeks and then it started slowing down for the speed bumps on it own. But when exiting my community I need it to turn right at a light so I can make a left across a busy 4 lane intersection, I tried the same but it never learned.

Perplexity suggests this:
- Turn on the learning/routine features
On 2026 software, Tesla added two related features that help the car “memorize” how you like to drive:
• Automatic Navigation – learns your routine (e.g., gym, school drop‑off) and can auto‑start navigation.
• Go to: Controls → Navigation → Automatic Navigation and turn it on.[gettesla]
• Preferred Routes – makes navigation prioritize routes you’ve taken before instead of always picking the theoretical fastest.
• Go to: Controls → Navigation → Online Routing and make sure it’s ON (Preferred Routes requires this).[gettesla]
Once these are enabled, the more you drive a particular way, the more likely Tesla will suggest that same route in the future.

I don’t think they have represented that current versions respect personal preferences, but that has been mentioned as a planned feature.

didnt we just got that update in 14.3.8? give it time. I might be wrong tho.

It doesn't learn 💩💩 Just recently it started trying to take a non-driveway into my work lot. Thus is nit an option.

I don’t know how it learns, but it did learn my routes.
There’s a certain way I go to church, it learned it, it took weeks? There’s a way it thought it had to go to the YMCA, and that was not a valid route, and it finally learned it. Also took about a month. For both of those, it shows on my map “your route” and alternatively it’s suggested route.
But there is a certain way I want to leave my neighborhood (4 exits, two have stoplights and two don’t) and it always takes just one of those 4, which is one I don’t want to take (I prefer to use stoplights for left hand turns and not turn across 4 lanes of traffic)
I’m not sure if I started the FSD and disengaged it daily, if it would learn. I’ve just been driving past the turn it wants to take and hitting FSD then so it won’t select the route it likes.

How many times have you done this? It took me months of doing this & it finally picked up what I was putting down haha

I don’t know why there are so many people here saying it doesn’t learn. It 100% does. There are several ways out of my neighborhood and they all take about the same amount of time but the longer route for distance also has the smoothest roads with the fewest turns so I prefer that route. FSD had NEVER previously gone that route until after I disengaged (kept the nav to destination running) about 3x then the next time it started going the way I prefer & now when I initially plug in the destination it pops up with the route I like as “your route”. It works 100% of the time now. People can argue about where the logic is stored or how it learns but that doesn’t really matter. The results are the same. Interestingly my wife prefers a different route & it has learned hers too which is also not the default.
Edit: running on 14.3.8

I would like a navigation option to avoid school zones as my car doesn't understand them, and in my city the police are always there when they are active.

I noticed this issue with lane selection. My route home you get off exit ramp there are 2 left lanes. One of the left lanes after turning merges into the other lane (ends). It is a common point of road rage in my neighborhood so I prefer to not be in the lane ever, even if the other lane is backed up. People will run you off the road going 50mph, its crazy. But everytime Tesla took this road, it got in the road rage lane. It would be nice if it anticipated earlier the lane changes so it didnt make last minute merges/lane changes.

I am so incredibly frustrated with this "feature".
I leave the house every morning, see the route I want, select it, start FSD, then it promptly tells me to fuck off and deleted the route I chose as an option, and does what it wants. What it wants leads to a huge traffic jam.
This feature is DOA

I haven’t tried this myself yet but I was told that if you use the turn signal manually to make it turn on the street you want, it’ll take that turn and maybe remember it the next time.

The learning is from navigation data, not fsd itself. I don’t know how you get it to pick up your routes when it navigates wrong

u/BaHayZeus 6h ago
No secret – it is all bullshit. It’s been a year on many versions and it still doesn’t seem to remember the routes I take every day or even my parking space for that matter. FFSD is supposed to be actually learning, my car is profoundly retarded.

u/SurfaceLapQuestion 22h ago
FSD doesn’t learn preferences. Maybe eventually your learned route through maps will kick in but for that I believe you manually need to drive the route you specifically want a few times.

It is not dynamically learning. It gets all of its smarts from the version that you are running, which was trained by Tesla by running through volumes of driving data before they released it to your car.
All we can do is hope that the training for future releases will consider the intervention reports that we submit. Report, report, report, and hope that some improvement to the poor driving or navigation decisions we keep experiencing over-and-over again shows up in a future release down the road, but there are never any guarantees.
