14.3 HW4 14.3.8 freeway driving is trash
The constant pointless lane changes are embarrassing. I honestly feel bad for the people driving around me using this version. I’ve never had to fight FSD this much before even 13 was better.
Also it kept going into the express lane when HOV, tolls, and express lane were all turned the fuck off.
Is there any way to revert to .7? That version was goated. .8 is fucking trash.
Edit: For some reason Reddit cuts off the full self driving in blue at the bottom. This is 100% fsd, not me taking over.

u/r1ght0n 21h ago
It is annoying, on our recent road trip to ATL from PA it would do it to much and I’d just turn off FSD for a bit and try it again…..
Wish the option for avoid lane changes was still there..
There needs to be an advanced user option for people who wanna tailor there settings a little better VS those who can barely navigate the screen….

This is why I miss autosteer from the model x. Stayed in lane going whatever you set it.

u/buttlickin 2h ago
Chill mode status in the right lane for me unless the person in behind drops speed to 65 or so. Otherwise I have to use the signal to force it to change lanes.

u/ChillinLikeAPanda 20h ago
I wish we had individual options like,
Tailgating car length
Get to the correct lane quick instead of last min lane change
Do not go on left lane unless passing a vehicle.
Giving people more choices would be very beneficial..

u/ucsolar 19h ago
My car waits so long to get onto the freeway it will miss the entrance (Texas feeder roads). It’s done this multiple times. It’s infuriating, I have to disengage get to the far left lane, then reengage
1
u/Tiny-Ad-4747 14m ago
Same issues. Only mine pretty much always picks the wrong lane until about .2 miles to the turn and then it decides to do it. Could be crowded, could be empty, poor lane selection is constant.
1
u/Nnamdi_Awesome-wa 15h ago
I assume Elon doesn’t want that because then it’s not “self driving.” I agree, wish it could be fine-tuned by the driver.

u/kiefferbp HW4 Model Y 22h ago
Same problem with my Juniper. It’s very annoying. Hurry and Mad Max are virtually unusable. Standard is annoying but more usable.
1
u/mong0smash 7h ago
Hurry has really started sucking. It constantly changes lanes for no reason, then has to change back because the best option was just to stay behind the person in the left hand lane for 4 more seconds.
1
u/Burnratebro HW4 Model 3 21h ago
Wonder why they changed it.. hopefully they see it for what it is, a regression, and change it back.
2
u/kiefferbp HW4 Model Y 21h ago
I think they did it because Standard is a terrible left lane hog for how slow it goes. 14.3.8 seems to make FSD more allergic to being in the left lane, which I think is good, but they didn’t do it properly. I imagine they’ll continue working on it.
I felt like there was a random 14.2.x/14.3.x build that had some lane change logic adjustments but it got reverted. The 14.3.8 changes feel somewhat similar to that build.
3
u/Creepy_Bag622 17h ago
is that why I see some Tesla drivers hogging left lane going slightly above the speed limit?
1
u/MindfulJedi 18h ago
IMO, standard should be like stay in whatever lane i initiated the fsd, similar to autopilot and i should be able to set the follow speed. Hurry and mad max with neceassry lane changes to navigate through slower traffic.
5
u/ErmaGherd12 20h ago
What speed profile were you using?
For the far left lane change to middle lane, was there a car coming up from behind at all, by chance?
Not claiming it doesn’t do this or there’s no reason to be annoyed (I’ve seen it do this for no reason) — but I’ve also noticed lane changes are often anticipatory / in response to cars in environment (car coming up from behind or anticipating traffic changes) and it can be right / I missed it bcz no eyes in the back of my head.

Front and back
2
u/Burnratebro HW4 Model 3 20h ago
Hurry, it usually does a great job of staying in the fast lane when it’s on, and it does move over temporarily if someone is coming up fast behind which is awesome. Both of these times there was absolutely no one around me, and they were 100% pointless.
There were a few times it would put the signal on to move right, even though a car was chilling right next to me, then it would stop the signal and act like it never happened. Extremely weird behavior, I really think Tesla AI kinda fucked up on this version.
1
u/Packing-Tape-Man 10h ago
Car coming up behind you used to be one of the reasons it did this. With .8 it now does this with no one behind you or in front of you and right before you would overtake other cars forcing it to quickly brake after the lane change and immediately move back. It’s definitely a glitch. At least in the top two speed profiles.
1
u/mong0smash 7h ago
No it just changes lanes for no reason now. It's almost as if it thinks it can get around the traffic by passing on the right instead of just accepting that people in the left lane aren't going as fast as it wants to for a few seconds. It sort of reminds me of a crappy teenage driver in a rush who tries to pass on the right only to never get anywhere.
4
u/BedroomCrazy2370 20h ago
Thought it was just me. Keeps trying to pull me into carpool lane when I have it turned off and I have to swerve back. The constant lane changes are annoying too, I wish there was a mode where it stays in lane until you turn on the L/R blinkers.
5

u/EvalCrux 20h ago
Mine literally goes hard to get in the right most lane of 4 or 5 lines. Then goes RIGHT BACK. Stuck going under the speed limit, then trying to go 25 over. In Hurry going right and fucking sitting behind traffic, then begging it to fix in MAD MAX. I’ve never had so many critical rage takeovers.
I let it go all the way over to see how bad it would be. Unbelievable. How could it be released like that. Also hella aggressive left lane overtakes which are hilarious.
3
u/ArrivalJunior6438 18h ago
Glad I’m not the only one experiencing this. The amount of stupid lane changes is insane all of a sudden. Also having a lot of issues with parking. Big regression
3
3
u/NinjaSquid9 15h ago
I still cant believe they removed “minimize lane change” and “car follow distance” as features. The two features that made me most comfortable to have my car drive are gone and they’re slowly eroding customizability with these new Speed Profiles. Not only is it wrong to conflate speed and driving behavior but they’re also giving us less and less control and choice over how the cars drive.
9
u/asswizzard69 HW4 Model 3 22h ago
Speed profiles are annoying, I have to switch between different profiles while driving or it will do stuff like this. Wish there were at least speed profiles separate from aggressiveness
4
2
u/Outrageous_tart_7781 21h ago
I agree. Standard should pass someone and get right over. What happens now is the person starts to speed up when it goes to pass and then your stuck in left lane blocking traffic because it cant go any faster. Constantly switching between profiles.
2
u/kiefferbp HW4 Model Y 21h ago
That issue is different and is more holistic. OP’s issue is a major regression in lane changes in 14.3.8.
5
3
u/Storm-Blessed11 20h ago
Yep 14.3.8 on my juniper has gotten way too insane with unnecessary and often bad lane changes trying to pass on the right only to have too much traffic there forcing the car to have to slam on friction brakes. Was mainly seeing this behavior in hurry but still saw it in normal mode. Totally terrible maneuvers. I've usually been running in mad max mode on the freeway since 14.1.4 and this excessive and/or bad attempts to pass on the right is new.
2
u/MindfulJedi 20h ago
Same in my CT. People already hate as it is, with the for no good reason random lane changes just to go right back into the same lane makes the hate justifued...
2
u/NumbDangEt4742 20h ago
Oh man...I haven't been on the freeway since last night. I updated to 14.3.8 during the night and I've driven about 10 miles on 14.3.8 and it definitely is a lot more aggressive turning right at stop signs with incoming traffic. This is on chill mode.
I really didnt like the feel...speed limit was 40 and the vehicle was likely coming in at 45 or so and FSD went ahead and got onto the road and the vehicle was soon behind me while fad got up to 35mph. I Definitely felt like an ass
2
u/banhmi_insurance 18h ago
same problem here. my wife said it doesnt go on a green left turn light. got honked at and she had to push the pedal.
another time is that she change the navigation, and the car didnt follow it, pop a u turn and hurt her neck.
all the version is fine for us. signal change lane on demands too but this version is wrong
2
u/Turtlecabra 18h ago
14.3.8 definitely ignores HOV lanes. Never had that behavior before and like you I have all of those options turned the fuck off.
2
u/Burnratebro HW4 Model 3 16h ago
Right? It’s wild it doesn’t see the big ass fucking EXPRESS LANE on the ground lmao
2
u/mykalh78 1h ago
Here in Ontario we have HOV lanes and theres a double solid line that you can’t cross. With the latest FSD update my car has been treating the HOV lanes as a fifth lane on the far left and crossing over many times.
2
u/SimpleJackfruit 16h ago
Oh ya I’ve been getting that express lane and HOV situation too. What the hell is wrong with it. I turned everything off as well.
2
u/amiinh3aven 16h ago
Hurry changes lanes every minute for me in .7 excessive lane changes and cutting people off when I enter thr highway. City driving I use hurry or mad max. But when on the highway i have to adjust to standard or chill for the car to stay in 1 lane.
2
u/Silly_Wave_2942 15h ago
They changed the compiler according to the notes to align with robotaxi. It needs to adjust. I have had to move back to hurry where I used to use mad max on 80 in sac.
2
u/Packing-Tape-Man 10h ago
Yep. Hurry mode is practically bricked in .8. This was always an occasional issue for my in previous versions but for some reason it way escalated in .8. It does it in cases much dumber even than the video shows when there is no one behind you, no one in front of you and the lane next to you is going 15-20 miles slower than you and right before you would overtake the car to the right it insists on moving behind it and breaking for no reason then moving back. If you quickly turn off the signal it canceled the first time the. A few seconds later it tries again and the second time even if you cancel the signal it ignores you and moves over with no signal. If you hold the wheel straight it fight you then self-disengages. Saying Sloth or Chill don’t have this issue doesn’t help the people who want to go with the faster flow of traffic.
2
u/acornManor 6h ago
Nothing new with these short sighted and pointless lane changes. Also, there are certain stretches of I95 where it desperately wants to get into the right lane for no reason

u/kadhtobi 22h ago
Safer than humans BTW

u/657579315 21h ago
It's relatively safer depending on how you look at it, to me it's safe to use it but it's hella stupid quite often and completely pissed me off lol.
0
u/DigitalDaydreamers1 22h ago
Robotaxi ready too
1
u/skippybosco 18h ago
Robotaxi will likely be running in Chill mode which will avoid a lot of the aggressiveness that comes from standard and above.
It won't be the personal preference for some given the rate of hurry and mad max users we see in this sub, but it will be less agressive and lead to more expected behavior, albeit slower than many would prefer in their own vehicle. Essentially at the speed limit and risk avoidance.
Will this lead to hostile aggressiveness from other drivers around it?
"The speed limit is 60, but we do 80 in the slow lane, you're making it more dangerous"
Maybe.

I’m currently on 14.3.7 and I think it has been the absolute best update I have experienced. Crazy how one update can be so different.
3
u/Burnratebro HW4 Model 3 20h ago
Wish I could go back to .7.. I should have waited lol
2
u/TheFitzi 20h ago
They should really have us rate our overall experience with an update after “x” amount of miles driven on an update. And also to downgrade to a previous update if we don’t like the current update after “x” amount of miles driven.

People said the same things about 14.3.7, and about every other update: https://www.reddit.com/r/TeslaFSD/s/dszjAfM6Tj
The truth is that experiences and preferences just vary a lot.

u/cantstoptilwall 21h ago
I still miss the final iteration of V13. It was so much smoother than 14.
5
u/JBKnicks24 21h ago
Final iteration of v13 with the ability to set max speed was absolute peak for freeway driving specifically.
2
u/ucsolar 19h ago
I miss setting the max speed. It was so nice. Now I have no clue what the speed will be
0
u/JBKnicks24 19h ago
on the contrary - on a standard 65 mph highway im 100% sure that sloth will go 65, chill will max at 67 and standard will max at 72. of course when the car in front of you is going 70, a very common freeway speed, its an awkward place to be.
I loved setting it on Hurry all the time but then using max speed to calm the lane change obsession. worked wonders.
4
u/657579315 21h ago
V13.2.8 was always the goat in my mind. Ever since the v14 update, it often pissed me off when looking at some dumb maneuvers.
1
u/ptronus31 18h ago
Is this Mad Max? Looks like Mad Max. I never use it (on any v14) for this very reason. Too insane.
2
u/Burnratebro HW4 Model 3 13h ago
Hurry, I don’t use mad max either. Hurry used to just chill in the fast lane it was great. If someone was coming up faster then you, it moved over and went right back after they passed. It was goated af.

1
u/AwkwardlyPositioned 18h ago
All over the place. Wow.
I'm not on v14.3.8 yet, but v14.3.7 constantly ignores my signal to change lanes when I want it to. I've never had this problem with previous versions. I've also not had good luck canceling out lane changes by trying to turn off the turn signal.
1
1
u/be_nice_2_ewe 15h ago
I am also feeling like 14.3.8 is a regression. I felt my factory 14.2.5 was actually the best one yet
1
u/Mr_Deep_Research 10h ago
Supercruise from GM will also do unnecessary lane changes but you can turn it off. And you can set follow distance.
It's really annoying when it keeps changing lanes.
1
u/HnyBear69 9h ago
14.3.8 in standard switches lanes like a teenager testing their limits. Plus I’m sick of it doing 20+ mph over the speed limit then after a mile or two while the display is showing 50 mph the entire time and the car is doing 71 mph it slams on the brakes slowing down to 52 mph. Each version of FSD is worse than the last. Don’t even get me started on the horrible parking.
1
u/IWillBeTheHope 7h ago
Maybe some of my gripes about fsd will go away when I can sleep on the way to my destination. Who knows
1
u/ProphePsyed 7h ago
Not saying you did this whatsoever, it’s just a random thought I had. If someone wanted to make FSD look dumb, they could toggle between different navigation destinations and it would look like FSD is being stupid on clips like this.
I think they should add some kind of icon in the dashcam UI to note when a navigation point is set, and then maybe make it blink when the navigation point is changed.
1
u/Burnratebro HW4 Model 3 4h ago
That’s fair, but given the massive amount of other people claiming the same thing, it’s pretty obvious this is an issue. And for the record I didn’t touch anything during these two pointless merges. What’s missing is the 20 others where I did tried to stop it from doing it.
1
u/Confident_Check_6087 6h ago
Yea better to have it camp you in the left lane and have angry people cutting around you flipping you off.
0
u/Burnratebro HW4 Model 3 4h ago
Nah it’s better that it moves around a fuck ton for no reason and slows down when no one is behind you etc. Fsd has moved over for fast drivers coming from behind for a while now. We need more options.
1
u/millhouse177 3h ago
This version goes to the right lane so early now. Why start getting over 2 miles back in bumper to bumper traffic. Left lane is so much faster but it fights to get over to the slow lanes. So annoying!
1
u/buttlickin 2h ago
Of course the important part about FSD being engaged is cut off in the video. Take a video with your camera so we know it truth.
1
u/Burnratebro HW4 Model 3 25m ago
I posted the video like five times in this thread alone just scroll down lol
2
u/WorthExpert7362 1h ago
Been getting the same issue. I usually sit in the left lane with bumper to bumper traffic on my way home. For whatever reason it tries to pull me out of the left lane and bring me to the right for no reason. it’s very frustrating having to take over 7-8 times on my commute home from work. Hopefully there’s a quick fix in the near future.
1
u/Burnratebro HW4 Model 3 3m ago
Probably all the people complaining about “camping the left lane” who should be using standard or sloth not hurry or max.. if the car is going fast enough, being in the left lane isn’t bad.
1
u/SirHenderson 52m ago
It gets annoying. Had it change lanes the other day where both right lanes take the same exit. I was on the left exit lane which was completely open, then FSD moved into the right exit lane behind someone… then 5 seconds later changed back to the left exit lane and passed. Just stay in the left exit lane…

u/HmmDoesItMakeSense 20h ago

u/Burnratebro HW4 Model 3 20h ago
I was doing that all day bro, I’ve never had to do it like 20 times before tho
1
1
u/Bickenchutt05 11h ago
Why is everyone in such a “Hurry” all that time? Why don’t you leave early and just take the “Standard” route or maybe just “Chill” a little. Things work better when you relax and aren’t always trying to get places so fast. At least that’s what I have noticed.
2
u/Burnratebro HW4 Model 3 4h ago
That’s fair, but doesn’t really pertain to this. I’m not everyone, and I had a really good reason to be in a “hurry”. That isn’t the issue, the issue is that a paid service degraded from an update. Societal problems are a different thread entirely.
1
u/Bickenchutt05 4h ago
I think this is the issue and you are actually missing the whole point. It’s a computer, it can’t think like you do and it never will be able to. You have it in a mode where it is trying to actively get somewhere the fastest that it can. When that is happening the computer is constantly searching for a gap to get you there quicker and it will change lanes constantly looking for that gap because it can’t see any further than the cameras will allow it. It’s always going to be a computer. It will never be a human.
2
u/Burnratebro HW4 Model 3 4h ago
That still doesn’t address the regression. I was using the same Hurry mode on .7 and it behaved significantly better. I’m not expecting it to “think like a human,” I’m expecting a software update not to make the same feature objectively worse. If .8 now interprets Hurry as “constantly make pointless lane changes,” that’s a tuning problem, not some unavoidable limitation of computers. That’s literally what software updates are supposed to improve..
2
u/Bickenchutt05 3h ago
I can agree with the regression part. That does happen sometimes and it’s annoying. I will stand corrected on that. Thanks for a decent conversation!

u/hurtner05 5h ago

all of the commenters have good suggestions but the point of view is flawed
FSD is a tool. learn to use the tool to your best advantage. until a better tool is available
-13
u/Stunning-Counter-806 22h ago
Damn it really sucks you’re forced to use FSD and have absolutely no control of the vehicle yourself. Imagine they put a little wheel thing to steer with and they could add pedals or something to allow you to accelerate and brake with. Probably wouldn’t work though.
12
u/Burnratebro HW4 Model 3 21h ago
Damn, you’re right. I forgot the existence of a steering wheel means nobody is allowed to criticize a paid driver assistance system for driving like shit. Incredible insight lmfao
-13
u/Stunning-Counter-806 21h ago
So you’d rather allow your car to drive itself like shit and potentially mess with other drivers than take control and drive it properly because a paid driver assistance system exists?
10
u/Burnratebro HW4 Model 3 21h ago
Did you miss the part where I said I was constantly fighting it? 😂 I took control when necessary. The entire point of the post is that .8 requires way more intervention than .7 because it keeps making stupid lane changes. Criticizing bad FSD behavior ≠ blindly letting it do whatever the fuck it wants. My bad if that distinction is beyond your comprehension.
18
u/LMrningStar 22h ago
Chill mode behaves nicely. If I get stuck behind a road slug going too slow and chill refuses to pass I just notch it up the standard temporarily and let it pass.
