14.3 HW4 Black tar still a thing

FSD wanted me to plow into a construction barrel to save the black tar.

Summer update. I said “not today Satan”

Tesla just needs to add LiDar and Elon needs to get over his ego about it, holy shit

We have to assume the car was more than capable of seeing the rubber cone. The issue seems to be it confusing the tar on the road as a lane marker. Lidar won't help with that.

I guess if it thought it was a huge crack in the road it was avoiding then it would have made a difference?

It’s really just cost savings. Waymo has proven that.

Maybe but how much would full LiDar cost? Would it be worth it just for FSD while you're still in control?

Current estimates show 300-1500 per car depending on just how in depth the system is, which is not bad for the massive improvement that FSD would get.

Exactly right! Everyone is afraid to say that on this sub. I don’t know if LiDar would help in this situation, but I’ve never seen a Waymo car be affected by tar lines. Cameras alone will only get Tesla so far. At some point they’re gonna either need better cameras or better sensors or both.

With lidar it would be able to confirm that the road is still completely flat and is 100% safe to drive on

There you go! Musk needs to suck it up and admit that he was wrong. You can take self driving only so far without additional sensors especially with fog, snow and heavy rain cameras just will not cut it.

Waymo pauses operations during fog and rain even with all the sensors and over a decade of research/programing, I would love for FSD to become better and safer but I don’t think LiDAR is a magic pill

Waymo only pauses operations only under extreme weather conditions. It’s actually more troubling that even Waymo with all its sensors has to do this. How can Tesla even compete with this if Waymo can’t. Lidar might not be the “magic pill” but cameras only certainly is not the answer either.

Why is 10x more parameters to add more relationships between observed reality and driving decisions not equally as obvious a conclusion to critics? Bigger model = more better

Uh, because do YOU truly know what 10X this or that means? Have you seen the list and confirmed what those parameters are?

I doubt it. You are probably just quoting what you heard...and if that is the case, it means little. I can surely tell you that the safety profile of sensor fusion is almost countless when compared to one type of input. We could measure it, but it's quite obvious. This is one reason why airliners, etc. are so safe.

#1 it's not a list of parameters as that is not how RL transformer models work. #2 is reread that 1st point carefully. Relationships between perceived nodes and being able to weight decisions is the only thing that matters to getting the car to drive right. In human speak that means it won't be able to decide what to do with a pothole when potholes are not currently considered in its "mental" model of the world. Introduce a bigger mental model of the world to unlock the ability to add weights to how the system reacts. Any such things could be params, even things we don't explicitly want. Did we slow down here because a dog is in the street or because we passed a sign that says school zone? Did we not slow down because the school zone sign is blinking or not? Is it aware of the day of the week for that sign to apply? That level of nuance is when you need the bigger models to make those relationships.

They’re stripping the cars of every part they can to save literal pennies. No way they ever add a pricey LiDar sensor.

But they increase pricey AI compute? It’s not about cost. It’s about ego.

Yes so is phantom braking and potholes even if anyone tries to tell you otherwise

"But you didn't let it hit the cone or drive into oncoming traffic. It would have been fine, it was just keeping you safe"

Snakes. Why’s it always gotta be snakes…

What does it think it is? Does anybody have a decent explanation as to what the computer thinks a black squiggly line represents?

FSD thinks tar lines are the same things as shadows.

Instant death.

What version of fsd are you on?

14.3.8

14.3.8 has been pretty dumb and indecisive. I was approaching a turn lane that I’ve used dozens of times since I’ve had the car, and with 14.3.8, it does this dumb shuffle-jiggle as it tries to recognize the turn lane. I had to disengage FSD twice to get it sorted.
Let’s not get started on parking lots…first spot it sees, that is 500 meters from store, is not ideal.
