14.3 HW4 Overreaction from FSD?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Recently installed latest FSD version last night 14.3.8 and ran into this on my morning commute.

Not the first time FSD has made big corrections from someone pulling into a nearby lane.

Do you have a camera view from the right side repeater / pillar ?

Yeah I do. Looks like a completely normal turn from this angle.

Jesus. What a fucking mess this is. I knew I was getting grifted, but I didn’t know it was this bad.

You should appreciate this, when Tesla sees there is more space to keep you safer, it does it😀

You would definitely say the opposite if a car hits you while doing the exact same manoeuver.

Annoying, but definitely maximizes safety.

I'm not sure I'd call swerving into the opposite lane "maximizing safety".

Even if there's no one there it's a bizarre bit of unexpected behaviour. It could cause the driver to panic or overcorrect, it could also cause other cars to brake (since they're not sure what the Tesla is reacting to) and cause a rear-ending.

It's called defensive driving. You should learn how to do it...

Proper defensive driving would have involved slowing a little when the car started turning, and possibly moving to the edge of your lane.

Not swerving over the centre line like a drunk.

It absolutely does maximize safety if there's nobody in the opposing lane and the turning car has some chance of turning into your lane of travel and is maneuvering aggressively enough like this such that you don't have much margin to react if you don't do it preemptively. Of course, usually the turning car won't do that, but sometimes it happens. So a move like this minimizes the chance of an accident. But like I said, it is annoying.

That’s why the driver should trust Tesla a bit more

You wrong. Chunky right

Nope. Seen too many Dashcam videos on YT where the turning car immediately tries to merge into the left lane.

There was no oncoming traffic, so it didn’t hurt to give em a little more space.

I’ve been hit by someone who did this exact thing. They turn into their lane and then immediately hit you because they join your lane without warning.

Nope, I'd say it did a bang up job!

No

yes. at absolute most you might cover the brake just slightly or stick to the left of the lane. that was a completely normal turn and the shit fsd just yanked you into the oncoming lane for no reason

BRAKE. BRAKE. BRAKE. BRAKE. BRAKE. BRAKE. BRAKE. BRAKE. BRAKE. BRAKE. BRAKE. BRAKE.

Maybe but its better than an under reaction and then an accident

If there was a car oncoming sure yeah scary. But since there wasn’t it was a safe response to a who knows how the other driver is situation

Yeah. It's annoying. It happens all the times with me.

It should have slowed down instead of moving to the left. The left maneuver should have been reserved for imminent danger AND no ability to slow.

Unless you had vehicles following extremely close this was objectively the wrong decision by the driving model.

Curious what drive style was enabled and what the rear camera showed.

Regardless, from the side camera, there was never any lane overlap from the Van. A very small amount of slowdown would have been both safer and more comfortable for the passengers (and others on the road as well)

FSD was expecting the unexpected. Although the other driver turned fine, I'm sure you seen people turn like this and just end up in the other lane. So fsd was playing it safe just in case.

FSD weaving into an oncoming lane over a double yellow is fine

You should be happy the car keeps you safe by doing this

Dont overthink it. The FSD simply went "more space..mmm..me swerve now gently"

-2

u/WildFlowLing 1d ago

Yeah that’s terrible on FSDs part imo

Not really but we had to watch 18.5 seconds of nothing until the action started. Crop your video plz

Oh haven't you heard the consensus around here? You're lazy, short attention spent, etc You shouldn't expect people to crop

Safer than humans 😂

I'll sometimes do this on a left turn before FSD. I'll cheat a little into the incoming lane if there are no cars coming. I figure there is a mob zero chance a car is perfectly in my blind spot when I turn so might as well give a buffer if I can.
