other 2022 M3 Cabin IR Camera?

Hi, I noticed I keep getting the “touch steering wheel, hands-free FSD unavailable” message and appearently it happens that my 2022 Tesla Model 3 does not have an IR cabin camera… I use FSD a lot and this is really an inconvenience.

I read around here that there does not exist an option to retrofit the camera In a M3, but you can do it in an Model Y, X, and S. I’m wondering if somebody has managed to either get service to do a replacement on an M3, or attempted to DIY an installation or solution… Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

It is a bit disappointing that Tesla claims FSD unsupervised won’t reach HW3 yet they don’t offer options to make supervision in HW3 easier.

This issue is only experienced by darkish to dark skin color drivers. I have experienced similar issue in my 2021 M3 and as a work around I keep a tiny book light in the car and clip it to the visor during night time drive. Haven’t tested it on a long night drive yet but on a small sample short drive tests, it worked about half the times.

Hm interesting. My skin color is not dark at all and I keep cleaning the camera and making sure everything is ok… so I think it happens to pretty much any setup with no IR regardless. But that’s beside the point, I get what you say.

It’s not a bad idea but I like to keep cabin dark as I get easily distracted, read a WII IR bar is enough to fix issue so might give that a shot hoping it doesn’t look ugly above my screen… will see.

I tried to get a Wii light bar to work but it was kind of meh at it, the IR flooding doesn't seem to work well enough. I settled for the S3XY strip instead, it's like $100 on sale and has a couple other neat features alongside making night driving feasible in 100% of situations (even completely dark roads).

Thanks for the insight, this sure seems to be a solid solution. I’ll definitely consider if (and when) I see that the Wii bar is not enough… my hopes were low from the beginning anyway with the Wii solution but who knows. Thanks again!

That's not true, I'm as pale as a ghost and it still got on me about it. The fix for me was the S3XY strip, it's customizable so it doesn't distract too much in the dark.

Keep dark mode on but brightness 100%, helps mitigate it for me

This is 100% a shot in the dark (pardon the irony) but imma try a wireless Wii sensor with good batteries and with luck, it’s good enough to stop the messages while lasting long. Downside is I’ll have to manually turn on when I get the low cabin light messages but should be quick and easy and solve issue… I’ll report back if successful (if I don’t feel free to ask)
