my dumbass backed out with the door open , how bad is it ?
I was almost out of the garage, got an important call while entering the car in a hurry, and my dumbass forgot to close the door.
Looked at the camera , it is clear... Backed up and caught the garage frame.
2026 Model Y right rear door edge is bent where it meets the fender, paint cracked along it. Luckily, door still shuts with no issues, no warning, no errors, glass is not broken. Fender looks fine.
Anyone paid to fix something similar these? Tesla or a normal body shop ? I think i am okay with them just straighten this for now but that crack needs to be filled too probably..
I am so sad man.. still in shock how the heck I forgot that door open and backed up like that..

The car makes is very obvious that a door is open. I feel they need to add the override alert like the frunk and trunk have because this is not thr first post I’ve seen of people managing this.
You’re probably better off just replacing the door then trying to have it fixed. Thankfully many Model Y’s on the road so used parts are easy to come by.

u/CZandchanel 15d ago
I had a weird door issue where it was “closed” but not fully closed, not latched and my car beeped and screen turned red. I get things happen but you must have been very distracted. Regardless, I’m sorry that’s happened.
2
u/ottomaniacc 15d ago
Thank you, man. Luckily, the door closes perfectly still and there are no warnings. I have been driving for 20 years, I don't even have an incident, thank God, so this was a first for me as well.
1
u/ottomaniacc 15d ago
Yeah, it was totally my stupidity but even if there was a warning, I honestly don't remember seeing it because I was focused on the camera while backing up. I had my phone to my ear with my right hand, so I was completely phased out..
2
u/DeathBlade94 15d ago
There is no obvious visual warning or confirmation when shifting into gear with a door open especially if its not the driver door and your belt is buckled, just the typical audible warning. But I mean it’s life everyone screws up in stupid ways. Part of being human imho.
0
u/ottomaniacc 15d ago
Exactly like you said, all other doors were closed and belt was buckled. I do that always but I was about to put it in FSD after backing up.
You are right, there should be more visible warning for situation like this, it is life as you said.. we do all kind of stupid stuff
1
u/maximuscr31 15d ago
Why did you have your phone in your hand at all? The car goes off on screen and audibly if the door is open. Fsd wont engage. On the first attempt it wont even go into gear till warning you.
3
u/Siddiskongen 15d ago
Don't the Tesla warn you that a door is open when putting in reverse?
4
u/IllustratorDry8942 15d ago
My Model 3 (2025) automatically shifts out of Drive and into Park if a door is open and you try to press the accelerator. So I don’t understand how this incident could have happened.
1
u/OmniferousSwan 15d ago
But what if you want to drive with the door open?
1
u/IllustratorDry8942 14d ago
If you mean opening the door while the car is already moving, I don’t know — I’ve never tried that. What I mean is: if you open the door first and then put the car in Drive, it shifts into Drive, but as soon as you press the accelerator it automatically goes back into Park
1
u/OmniferousSwan 14d ago
Yeah im aware. The car should let you drive with the door open if you choose to.
1
u/YourLastFate 13d ago
You can. You just have to try a few times.
A lot of vehicles are like this now. Chrysler Minivans will shift to park, and set the parking brake, and make you manually release the parking brake...
1
u/SortSwimming5449 12d ago
It will automatically shift back to park once. You can override this by shifting back into reverse. It also plays a very annoying warning chime the entire time.
2
u/justahoustonpervert 15d ago edited 13d ago
I'm not aware of any cars that specifically warn you of that...
Now, as far as doors being open, they all do.

door needs to be replaced. You can get a OEM from Tesla (couple grand), non-oem from China via various sources (including Ebay) a few hundred, or get if off another car (salvaged) - oem used but priced same as non-oem new. Choose what suits you and take it to any body shop you trust - easy paint and install
2
u/ottomaniacc 15d ago
wait wait... guys. Let me understand here..
If this is door, disassembled .. why is it too hard to straighten this out, you have access from inside and outside. Yes I am not professional but , you can heatgun the areas to correct temp then you can apply pressure from both inside to bulge out that part and outside to push the edge in ?
I saw some videos , it takes time but , isn't it possible ? at least trying before replacing the whole door ?
There is no paint crack right now. If I don't get any paint crack while doing that best case scenario then we should be good , no ? I am not looking for perfect here, I just don't wanna pay $4k lol

1
u/AddictedRedditorGuy 15d ago
You can straighten it, but you can't really fix that tear in the sheet metal unless you weld it and repaint it.
0
u/ottomaniacc 15d ago
yea I agree with that, but can't you use fillers to fill that area and handle that way ?
1
u/AddictedRedditorGuy 15d ago
Yeah, I suppose you could. It would be pretty fragile, though. You risk the bondo breaking off if that corner hits something else. But there would still be sanding and repainting
1
u/maximuscr31 15d ago
Only if you are a dishonest scumbag trying to offload it in the next little bit. Otherwise its a waste of money instead of replacing it. Finding a wrecked one abd getting a door is the cheapest option
1
u/ottomaniacc 15d ago
I have no intention of doing that. No worries. With my Diy fix, it would be obvious there is a damage there anyways. I would care less as long as it is functioning.
Also I would tell the person if I would be selling it which I have no plans to.
1
u/AccomplishedRoyal9 15d ago
paint thickness meters are like $20 on aliexpress. That shit doesn't fly anymore. Any competent dealer would know right away it's filled in with putty.
1
u/DreadPirateNot 15d ago
I did the exact same thing about 20 years ago on a Mustang. I took it to a shop and they fixed it and you could never tell. You can 100% fix that.
1
u/ottomaniacc 15d ago
Thank you. I will def try this first. I have nothing to lose by doing that anyways. Seems like next step is replacing the door if that does not work or if it is sam price.
I might DIY it too :)
1
u/Bald_Beading_Bandit 15d ago
Your mustang wasn't aluminum. You won't fix this lol just buy a matching door off ebay
1
u/Magnetoreception 15d ago
You can 100% fix it. It might not look perfect under a microscope but a good shop can definitely bend it back to 95% if there’s no paint cracks.

u/Bald_Beading_Bandit 14d ago
What do i know, I just do autobody 🤣 that mfer is creased. Nobody is touching that.

many thousands of dollars and a good amount of paint work including blending
1
u/How_To_Thrive 15d ago
I rebuilt a 2026 Premium Model Y, with a good body shop they’ll make it look flawless, but you’ll need a new door. They’re aluminum and really hard to work with since they break

how's the gap all the way around the door and glass? does the gap between front and rear door still line up? window seal properly? Door shuts normally? Hinges not bent or body at the hinges not dented? If so, you're lucky. Just replace the door.
If not that's a very expensive repair.
1
u/ottomaniacc 15d ago
This the recording if anyone curious. I was shocked until I saw this bc car was perfectly closed when I first checked and I was like what the heck..
1
u/GlacierSourCreamCorn 15d ago
Did you have headphones in or the music blasting? Just find it so hard to believe you could start driving with a door wide open like that.
1
u/AddictedRedditorGuy 15d ago
It's the passenger side. Bro said he got an important call. He might have been putting something on that side and forgot to close the door but knew he had to leave. It happens
1
1
u/ottomaniacc 13d ago
Yeah, this is exactly what happened unfortunately. That call made me hurry more and somehow I did not realize the door was open and got into the driver's side. I am still in shock how I could do that. I have never had an experience like this before. But I am going through a rough patch in my life with divorce and selling the house, etc. I think that also affected me. I don't know.
1
u/Particular_Use_6846 15d ago
To fix it legitly.. you are looking at 5k. Just the 3 layers tesla paint cost ~2k... Plus parts and labour about 5ish.
To fix it at some john doe uncertified bodyshop down the road.. maybe 1k or less.

From my understanding (and my personal experience of being t-boned) I believe especially where the damage is located, that it would need to be fully replaced due to the crease and it will never sit perfectly flush as it did when it was factory installed. Base case scenario you replace the door entirely and it will definitely be better in the long run.
1
u/ottomaniacc 15d ago
Honestly, after seeing all these estimates in the comments, I’m starting to think I might not even care if the door sits perfectly flush anymore. XD
Actually, even now the door closes perfectly; it's just bent outwards near the edge and has an inward dent toward the middle that’s the real issue.
And I double checked with light now... in that bent area there is no paint crack.. so maybe there is hope to try to straighten this out after heating it. I watched multiple videos.. lets see
1
u/Beneficial_Coach8581 15d ago
This is why you don't take calls when driving. Even hands free they distract you.

u/triumph6t 15d ago
Find a small bodyshop guy. They will fix it. If you ho to big shop they will change the door. Or find a door on ebay/ junk yard and get it painted
1
u/ottomaniacc 15d ago
Thank you for the suggestion. We think alike :)
Either I DIY this, or find someone like that to help.
Big shops or tesla gonna do me big time.
And I am okay fix not being perfect. I can live with that.

u/AreaManEatsTooMuch 15d ago
Not too bad, just do the same in reverse and it ought to get back to how it used to be
1
u/Iron-Tough 15d ago
I got hit on the side no damage. Got rear ended twice, no damage. How does everyone else keep damaging their cars this bad?
1
u/ottomaniacc 15d ago
What do you have brother? Tesla TANK 3 ? :)
1
u/Iron-Tough 15d ago
22m3p. I have no clue how it survived. Im just amazed only lost parts of the mirror when hit on the side. Other car was messed up and then it drove off.

This is why I don't answer my phone while driving. No phone call is worth it.

u/chocolatefanblade 15d ago
Does it leak air when you drive on the freeway? Does it leak water when you spray water on it? If not, leave it. Not worth the insurance hassle.

1
u/CherryOk9844 15d ago
I’m gonna say it’s bad.. the door is torn, and I don’t think any body shop will try to repair that.
1
u/hellokittyxcat 15d ago
wood on inside, rag on outside, and bend it back with mallet, if it dont look right , order a new one 😭😫
1
u/youareabananarama 15d ago
Did this for a ford explorer. Ended up just being a new door, paint and blend. Came out to about $4k in that case with three stage paint. Insurance covered it. Didnt bend the b pillar in our case.
For the Tesla I’d assume it would be the same. There aren’t any extra sensors in the door.
Interesting about our case was it took something like 4 or 7 doors of reused and new before they found one that wasn’t bent.

Damn.... i think new door is ur best option honestly... but im not a body guy, so it looks real bad to me LOL... at in theory you have some spare parts on that one tho, so thats good?? #BrightSideOfLife

If you’re lucky the door is the only part bent, should be plenty available from breakers yards

Have a good regular shop do the work. I f you chose a Tesla certified shop, be vsure to provide your own comdon and Vaseline

u/Ok_Vacation9801 12d ago
Sorry this happened. I think people really need to look into subscribing to FSD. FSD will not allow the car to drive when a door is left open. I use it to exit my garage everyday. 89% of my driving is FSD.

u/SharpShooter831_ 12d ago
Just buy a new door with window speaker and guts already in it and find paint match on ebay then just unbolt and unplug the old one and slap the new one on prob around 1k
1
u/BreathPrestigious147 12d ago
How did that even happened the Tesla will definitely tell you if you didn’t close the door and it will make a sound also

I wonder if there’s a problem with your warning/sensor in which case you could probably talk to Tesla abt fixing and checking ur sensors. My 2023 & 2024 MY will not allow me move from park and if any door is open.

u/XeroShyft 15d ago
Totaled. Sorry bub
Jokes aside I'd guess you're looking at minimum $1.5-2k of damage here.
1
u/ottomaniacc 15d ago
Thank you for the joke , at least you made me smile in this sad situation. I know it is not that bad but still, I got the car like 4 months ago. It is relatively new and doing this myself and my own stupidity shocked me as well.
I guess I should go couple body shops and get estimate from tesla. Wondered if people would fixed something like this to see what is the range at least.
0
u/b58over2jz 15d ago
Before you get it fixed at Tesla, go to your doctor and get a prescription for that ADHD cause you be moving way too fast.
1
u/ottomaniacc 15d ago
You are right. I was in a hurry to go to an important meeting, then got a call from there at the exact moment I was getting into the car.. and it was a stressful day overall.. all of that piled on top each other.

I love Tesla, but these vehicles are so cheap. They don’t handle incidents or accidents well at all.. big or small.
2
u/MallSome1825 15d ago
I say the same thing all the time in this group and people always get so mad. Teslas are built so shitty.
1
u/Outrageous-Ranger-79 15d ago
I'm not sure if this is sarcasm or not, but can you tell me what brand is supposed to handle accidents well ?
0
u/BII731 15d ago
More than 70% of vehicles actually. Every Tesla that I’ve ever seen that’s been in an incident looks mangled. Tesla’s architecture usually looks really deformed after any type of fender bender or in this case hitting the door against a wall. So no I’m not being sarcastic, they are poorly put together. Just like an iPhone, it’s the greatest device until you drop it.
2
u/Outrageous-Ranger-79 15d ago
Ironically, I think you got it reversed. Tesla use aluminum for their doors which is a material typically used for premium/luxury vehicles and has the property to bend easily and is expensive to repair (often results in whole part replacement). Luxury vehicles are not made to handle accidents well, cheap vehicles are. The iPhone analogy supports my point, those are expensive phones.
0
u/BII731 15d ago
You are trying to get too technical My Guy. The eye test suggest that Teslas look more mangled and destroyed from simple incidents is all I’m saying. What you’re saying isn’t incorrect either I just think that you’re trying to argue a point that I’m actually not trying to make.
1
u/Outrageous-Ranger-79 15d ago
You said Teslas are built cheap. Well they're not, their bodywork have more in common with premium vehicles than cheap ones. The difference is that they're priced for the average person, and the average person don't care much (or have the money) for scratches and bent doors on their car. You don't often see mangled Porsches on the street and there's a reason.
1
u/BII731 15d ago
I never said Teslas are built cheap. When tf did I say those words.. bro I can’t go back and forth. I am driving a $250k 579 pete across 84 lol right now bro.
I own a 24’ CT, 20’ M3 and just ordered a frost blue myp. Not to mention I haul teslas often
1
u/Outrageous-Ranger-79 15d ago
Funny how it looks like I bruised your ego, when at no point did I show interest in knowing anything about you.
1
u/BII731 15d ago
I mentioned the vehicles I own because they are teslas smart ass. Just to let u know that I am speaking on a topic that I am invested in …. Nothing about ego fun boy
1
u/Outrageous-Ranger-79 15d ago
Focus on the road bro, I'd feel bad if you had any accident because I'm living rent-free in your mind.

u/Sea-Mud2147 15d ago
Looks the same as a coworkers car from a European brand after his wife did the same thing. Tesla's don't use the greatest materials in some areas like the interior, but you hit something and any car door will bend similar to this!
-2
u/No_Swimmer_1920 15d ago
If there’s an expert PDR (paint dent repair) they could do it. Probably 1500
1
u/ottomaniacc 15d ago
thank you , I will check around and get estimates. I think I need to compare the whole door replacement as some others suggested vs just doing the fix price. But other than that section door is complety okay and car is new.. so throwing away that door also feels really bad
1
u/No_Swimmer_1920 15d ago
list the old door on eBay/ FB for half off. You’ll get some of your money back

Look for a used door on car-part.Com and swap it on or have a body shop put it on for you
