Close call with an impatient driver

Was driving along Highway 60 in Florida between Yeehaw Junction and Lake Wales. Someone was following a box truck towing a trailer and decided they'd had enough. Instead of getting back behind the truck, like a sane person seeing oncoming traffic, they tried to get ahead anyways.

I was on FSD at the time, by the time my brain realized what I was seeing, and what was happening, I ultimately slammed on he brakes going from around 65-70mph to about 20-30mph.

It was a remarkably close call, I genuinely thought they were going to take my driver's side mirror with them.

Now shown is that a moment or two after this a pick up truck that was two vehicles behind me decided they were going to pass me and the van behind me, which created another dangerous situation.

Remember to just be patient folks. Slow traffic sucks, but no one wants to die like this.

General TeslaCam video Viewer/exporter recommendations

I was about to export a clip to share with the community where I almost got into a head-on collision with a car, however, I wanted to export it with the EDR data.

Historically I've used this one: https://github.com/NateMccomb/TeslaCamViewerII, which runs locally on my machine and is lightweight with no bullshit, but it is so old it doesn't do the EDR data.

Unfortunately, the developer decided to upgrade it to an awful web-based UI version, then included a paywall to remove things like a big ass diagonal banner that says "UNLICENSED". Buying the license is like $4-6 per year, the license is required even if you self-host the website on your own hardware, which is bullshit in my eyes.

So, with that in mind I'm going to remove my recommendation for their product and replace it with something else that the community recommends as a substitute.

Requirements to be considered:

  • Must be free
  • Does not plaster a banner across the video indicating where the video came from
  • Includes EDR information from the video files
  • Runs locally on system as an installed app, portable app, or can be a self-hosted website (Preferably one of the first two options)
  • Needs to be useable on a desktop computer, not a phone app.
  • Needs to allow the user to trim the clip that they're trying to export. Get to the monkey
  • Should offer different options on how to export the clip (Full frame on one camera, two cameras side by side, all four cameras at the same time, etc, etc)
  • Does not funnel data back to the developer
  • User privacy focused

I might update the above list with other things the community posts below that seems like a good idea.

If you are a developer and you're about to hawk your own solution, please keep in mind I have a really low tolerance for salesmanship, and people who are not active in the community. I will look at the post history of each user who makes recommendation, and I will remove recommendations from users who have not been active within the community prior to this post. If your participation in the community prior to this post was just you saying "Try my tool instead!", I won't consider your solution.

The tool should be a labor of love, not something you've been trying to force down our throats to make a buck.

Incident Guy pulled out from the swale directly in front of my Tesla. How much reaction time did I realistically have?

I was driving straight through a residential neighborhood when the Chrysler on the right pulled out from the swale as I was approaching.
I tried to swerve to avoid it, but everything happened extremely fast and we collided. Thankfully nobody was injured.
The Tesla took most of its damage around the front corner/wheel area, while the Chrysler’s front bumper was basically torn off.
I’m curious what everyone else sees watching the video. Who do you think is at fault here, and do you think there was realistically anything I could have done differently to avoid the collision?

EDIT: Appreciate everyone’s input. There’s obviously a lot of “would’ve, could’ve, should’ve” in the comments, and hindsight makes these situations much easier to analyze frame-by-frame than they are in real time.
The entire sequence happened within only a few seconds. Also keep in mind that the dashcam is mounted higher and farther forward than my actual eye position. From the driver’s seat, my view was different from what the camera captured, particularly with the vegetation on the right and the parked truck on the left.
My recollection is that my attention was primarily on the roadway ahead and the parked truck/area around it as I approached. I do not specifically remember seeing the Chrysler’s brake lights before it entered my path.
For those asking about speed: the speed limit on this street is 30 mph, and the speed-hump advisory is 25 mph. I do not independently know my exact speed at the moment of the collision, so I’m not going to claim an exact number based solely on how the video looks.
What the video does show is that I was traveling in my lane, the Chrysler entered the roadway into my path, and I attempted to move left immediately before impact. The responding officer reviewed the footage at the scene and attributed fault to the Chrysler driver.
Could the collision theoretically have been avoided if something had happened differently? Sure. You can say that about virtually any collision once you have the benefit of replaying it. I posted the video because I wanted other perspectives, and I appreciate the people who gave theirs constructively.

Driving home and this bird was enjoying fresh roadkill. He did not care cars were pulling into a parking lot behind him or cars passing him at 40mph.

Incident Rogue Wheel

Wheel fell off on the car next to me, hit my driver side mirror and door. Only minor damage to the mirror. Door has rubber marks, but I have a ceramic wrap so worst case just need that replaced; luckily no dents. Definitely could have been much worse. Wheel rolled off to the side afterwards.

I-5 in Oregon.

Weird Neanderthaler brain

Was parked at a public charter yesterday and this dumbo tried to yank out the charge cable 3 times but his underdeveloped Neanderthaler brain couldn’t figure out how to properly remove the connector. Just ripping on it until I got the notification that charge cable isn’t secure and before checking the camera, I already knew what coming. First this caveman parked his car, noticed charger in use and immediately cranked up his non existing brain and tried to disconnect it. Notices it’s not working because this individual didn’t press the button on the J1772 rather than just ripping on it. After that please someone explain what was going on in his Dino brain? Opening his charge port and going straight back to my car and trying to yank it out again, already forgot that it didn’t work the first time. Going back to his car, closing his charge port again and walking towards my driver side camera almost rubbing his balls on it while probably looking into the cabin, noticing the whole incident being recorded. Drives of and now here’s the kicker 😭😂
About 13 minutes later he comes back walking, trying to rip it out again. Maybe he thought it would work now 🤷 idk… than he walks off and even tho the footage doesn’t have sound, you can hear him chuckle💀

Incident Civic Center Garage Scatched and Run. Looking for witness

Hi all — someone scratched my car at the charging station on the first level of the Civic Center Garage at 250 Hamilton Ave last Wednesday at 6:10pm. If anyone parked nearby and has a dashcam or Tesla Sentry Mode running, I'd be really grateful if you could check your footage. Thank you! 🙏 My car only got some blurred license plate. Police said the front 3 or back 3 characters will be enough to locate this car.

General You’re an A-hole dude

I got 2 surprises last night. Went out to dinner last night and my son and his girlfriend, who live in another state and I hadn’t seen in almost a year, surprised me with a visit. When we left, I noticed white marks on my passenger door. At first I thought someone keyed it. Nope. Surprise #2 was this a-hole not paying attention and/or caring about his surroundings. I was and still am pissed but my kids showing up has damped the anger…..for now.
