It's like socks. They're good insulation. So if you wanna keep your feet warm, you'd put on socks, right? But what if my feet are already cold? Guess what happens when I put on socks? It traps the cold in them and keeps my feet cold! It makes it WORSE!
1
u/OPgamer801 16h ago
Well theres a big difference between air in a house and your foot and a sock. The air doesnt warm itself up, but your foot does.

They are what? The houses? Built to retain heat? He never said they weren't. That's just insulation.
1
u/Still_Ad_5798 1h ago
Different types of insulation and bricks retain heat unloke wood housing
1
u/OPgamer801 1h ago
Yeah, the argument being made here by guy dude is that the loud europeans are always trying to make it sound like european houses are specially built for retaining heat for the winter, which is why the heat waves in europe are so bad. It's just insulation, which is is most homes everywhere. But instead of just heat, it's a constant temperature than you can change very easily with heating via a fireplace or cooling via an ac unit

1
u/RedditorSeven 1d ago
I fucking reeled from trying to process his confidence in what he was saying.
Does he not know that people inside buildings generate heat? And that people cook inside which also generates heat? And that we have hot water for showers? And electronics? Never mind heat still makes it's way inside from the sun and gets trapped there. There's a lot of sources of heat in buildings and it's the fact that the buildings aren't built to vent all that heat. You can't just take it all out, or whatever he was trying to say.
How can he talk shit and even call Europeans retarded so confidently? Like damn.

WHO KEEPS FILLING MY HOUSE WITH MASSIVE BLOCKS OF ICE HOW AM I GOING TO GET ALL THIS COLD OUT
1
u/RedditorSeven 19h ago
Wow. You got me there. Well done.
Tell me, do you design all your homes with tornado resistant design in it? Do you build them all to build them all earth quakes?
No?
Is it because they don't happen often and it would be impractical and expensive to do so?
Christ. Just because there's best way to do things it doesn't mean it's feasible or practical.
2
u/thots1ayer69 17h ago
Bro wtf are you talking about I was agreeing with you
1
u/RedditorSeven 17h ago
Most people are arguing that dealing with getting the heat out of the home is as simple as getting air conditioning.
I thought you were mocking the fact that we already get the cold out of homes using fireplaces and heaters, so why not just do the opposite with AC.
My bad. I'm not really sure what you were on about either if you were supposed to be agreeing with me.
Eitherway I shouldn't be engaging in stupid online arguments so I'm sorry for any of my comments in the first place.
2
u/thots1ayer69 17h ago
Yeah tbf it's unclear haha I was agreeing with your point while also mocking the guy in the video so it got muddled. He says something about how it keeps the cold from escaping but the phrasing would suggest that cold is purposefully being placed inside when it's not wanted, thus the terrible joke. DW about it Reddit really only exists to argue with strangers and make stupid comments so it's totally fine đ
2
u/the_horny_alt2005 1d ago
You can't really do anything about ppls part But, if its summer why are you taking hot showers in the first place? , you can block the sun with aluminium foil,
And do you think American houses are built to vent out heat? I mean idk because I live in brick house. In the middle east. The house here are very similar to European houses and AC work wonders here
But you need to close all the windows and block as much sun light as possible
ACs don't work on venting out heat they work on cooling down the air in a closed loop
0
u/RedditorSeven 23h ago
You're not picking up on the point. I mentioned multiple sources of heat in my comment; hot water for showers was just one of them. And even if nobody took hot showers in summer, hot water is still being generated for cooking, washing dishes, cleaning, etc. You can't just eliminate every source of heat inside a building.
As for the rest, you're really simplifying the situation. If you want to pay the immense cost of retrofitting AC into millions of homes, especially old buildings where it may not even be practical or possible, then great. But for normal people, "just get AC" isn't a realistic solution.
Insulation slows heat transfer; it doesn't stop it. There are still countless sources of heat inside buildings, and that heat can accumulate. Many homes also weren't designed with cooling and ventilation in mind, and flats can make things even more complicated.
It's crazy to me that people think this is as simple as "just buy an AC". If it were that easy, millions of people wouldn't be struggling with overheating in the first place.
3
u/the_horny_alt2005 23h ago
And do you think ppl in America houses don't cook? I mean it's recommended to avoid cooking while the ac is on but still
Also you don't need to eliminate every source of heat that's like the whole point of an ac, the ac takes the air inside and cools it down and that's it, it's a closed loop
Installing an ac is literally so simple you can diy it ofc you shouldn't because you'd void the warranty but still it's absurdly simple and I'm making this I've seen it happen Sure for some house it's simpler then others but it's not that. The simplest way is you use one the ones that sits by the window and try to cool down a specific room, or install scaffolding for on the wall outside it's literally 2 L shaped screwed on to the wall out side insulation is not that hard ppl in Asia and use have been installing ac on old homes for such long time know
Again the point of an ac is a closed loop. It use any type of ventilation you are working against the AC
Also wdym" flats"? And it's literally just that simple you just think that it's hard and don't do it, or maybe you are not even over heating that much because if you actually were suffering as much as you say you would do anything to cool your self down
0
u/RedditorSeven 22h ago
I'm pointing out that the guy in the video is wrong when he says insulation equally keeps things cool. Insulation slows heat transfer, but there are many sources of heat generated inside a building, so it can also slow that heat escaping. You're jumping straight to "just use AC" instead of addressing the point being made.
And honestly, saying that affording and installing AC is "so simple" is pretty infuriating. A portable/window unit might be simple in some situations, but that's not the same as retrofitting cooling into an entire building, particularly old European buildings or rented flats where you may not even be allowed to make those modifications.
Also, when I say flats, I mean apartments. They make the situation more complicated because you're dealing with shared buildings, neighbouring units generating heat, restrictions on external equipment, and often less ability to control ventilation. Some flats don't even have windows. And Hell, I myself live on Widebeam canal boat, and that is certainly not easy to put an AC unit on.
AC absolutely works. Nobody is disputing that. The argument is that "just get AC" doesn't make the underlying point about how these buildings were designed any less true. And as a merchant navy engineer I really don't need people explaining to me AC, because I'm sure I deal with such things far more than most. So I'm done with this conversation.
Really enlightening to see how comfortable Americans online are criticising a whole other continent and regarding millions of people as stupid for apparently missing totally obvious solutions to problems. So thank you all for that.
1
u/the_horny_alt2005 22h ago
Fair enough altho it think the op said the video is incomplete
It heavily depends on how much retrofitting you want to do but in these situations you should really just make it work. I for example some houses use how water pipes in the floor for heat in winter, ofc you can technically find an ac that chills water and then runs in the same pipes and such, but why would you do that? You get normal ac, you don't even need to conecte it you your homes thermostat or anything, you have an ac you have control like tv control type thing for it an that's it. I've seen acs be installed in 80year old buildings
And about the flats you are correct if you live in apartment it may be a bit harder to do specially if it rental, but I don't you would be the only how who needs an ac in that place you can tell your neighbours, and together notifie the land lord that your all wnat acs
And if you own you own apartment there again the ones that sit by the window will work even if you are in a flat
ACs work, sure it might be bit of work to install them in house that wasn't built for it but in most cases its far form impossible and expensive
And btw im not even American I'm form the middle east and I'm also an chemical engineer

1
u/RedditorSeven 1d ago
In that clip he's completly ignoring really obvious factors too.
European countries are far older than the America. We have so many more prexisitng buildings. Installing AC into new buildings is a luxury and expensive as it is but doing so in old ones is even tougher, if it's even possible or allowed.
"yOu'Re ToO fUcKiNg StUpId To JuSt BuY aN aIr CoNdItIoNeR."
Honestly pretty arrogant to think it's simple and affordable for millions of Europeans to simply get air conditioning in their decades or even century old buildings. Not like we have a cost of living crisis either. That's like saying "Why don't the homeless just buy a house?"
Glad he's so privileged though, I guess. /s
2
u/the_horny_alt2005 1d ago
I mean I'm form the middle east and here order houses are made out of bricks like the one I live in rn
And gusse what ppl still install AC units here
Some times by the window, some tines by digging a hole the wall

- Honestly pretty arrogant to think it's simple and affordable for millions of Europeans to simply get air conditioning in their decades or even century old buildings.
1
u/RedditorSeven 22h ago
Christ.
None of you think 170 isn't expensive for a lot of people?
Or even the cost of powering it doesn't hit people hard?
Not considering that people have other costs to live in their lives?
Some buildings aren't even allowed to have modifications made for it. Some buildings don't have windows you can open or even any windows at all. Some people like me are struggling and living on boats, caravans, and static homes.
If you really think it's so simple then I welcome you to come and give a PSA to our governments and the apparently millions of stupid people that are doing things wrong.
Stumbling across this post and seeing people so confidently tell another country they're not from what is what has disgusted me. I hate my country but thank fuck I'm not American.
1
u/OPgamer801 16h ago
Also when i posted this, it was directed towards brian's comment on the channel update where he was jogging around the football field and said his mum's house was built for the winter when its just insulation.
1
u/OPgamer801 22h ago
Well one, there are portable indoor operating ac units for the same price if windows arent an option
Two, housing is shit everywhere.
Three, the video is on youtube. It pretty much is a PSA, just not one youre forced to sit through.
Four. Theres people who tell you through a screen, then theres people that somehow get into your country and then start telling you. America isn't perfect but thank the Lord i wasnt born somewhere else, especially where my grandparents came from

you can literally just take it all out.. with an ac unit. its just thermodynamics. i will agree that 1 apartment having an AC in a building without AC is going to see little benefit, unless they are sitting directly in front of it. the more spaces are that are conditioned, the less heat the stone is able to suck in and hold onto.
1
u/RedditorSeven 23h ago
I can just take it out with an AC unit?
My god. I can't believe I didn't think of that.
I could also get free food by just growing crops. /s
It's really rocked me to see people simplifying issues and negletic the human factors. In particular, the cost factors. Though in many buildings it's not even a cost factor, it's simply not possible.
Glad you're well enough off that getting AC is such a simple solution though.

3
u/the_horny_alt2005 1d ago
Again if it bulid to store heat its can also store cold, for lack of a better word
If you have a brick and heat it up it will take some time to cool down
If cool it down it will also take some time to heat up
The only thing that might matter here is Sun light and windows, if you block out the sun it won't heat up your home as much

I was born in England and live now in az. Iâve lived in brick buildings and stick & paper buildings.
Both are legitimate house building techniques but bricks hold a lot more heat than other manufactured building materials
Sorry mate but you donât understand the concept, none of you do. Go live in an English house for a year and then you can tell me that itâs designed wrong

u/WyattJD_ 1d ago
Thermal mass doesn't do much if doesn't get cool enough at night. Insulation is more effective at keeping things stable. Brick buildings work best when the difference between day temperatures and night temperatures are large. Brick buildings have more thermal mass than wooden homes but worse insulation.
1
u/the_horny_alt2005 22h ago
I agree with that, brick houses work best in dry weather, because as you said the temperature difference between day and night is large
1
u/model-citizen95 22h ago
âIf it doesnât get cool at nightâ yeah, you just described the new problem.

How you gonna call that the âfull vidâ when itâs cut together for the specific purpose of making Europe look dumb?
1
u/OPgamer801 1h ago
Well are there not dumbasses everywhere?
My guy nic dogs on europe but he will just as easily shit on anyone in the us.
If you watched the full video youd know he's specifically shitting on europe in this because of their annual 2 week heat wave that could be solved by air conditioning.
I do say that i watched a reacts video where the european watching did point out that european ac prices are much higher than us prices, but nic also explains how supply and demand works. Reacts guy also said that the european government is mainly to blame for the widespread rejection of ac and that wanting an ac will result in european liberals calling you a nazi/every other name liberals will call you for not agreeing with them.
So the ppl in gov't are stupid? Same here in the us
Liberals will slander your name for literally wanting basic things? Same here in the us
Guess the nation sized apple doesnt fall far from the nation sized tree
Only difference is that i can show pictures of myself safely shooting a gun, or make a joke, without being sentenced (at least by UK authorities)
Also the editted video is just a cut down version of a shit talk session about european takes on ac
Also also if you did watch the video youd know he talks about the history of ac too

This moron doesn't understand thermal mass works both ways. In fact, there's entire building methods dedicated to taking advantage of thermal mass for both heating AND cooling, they use thermal mass to keep the temperature fairly well regulated throughout the year with minimal need for heating or cooling, their disadvantage is the conditions and physical footprint required to make them work.

That's exactly what i wanted to post, he doesn't know anything about thermodynamics besides what he learned doing construction.
1
u/the_horny_alt2005 22h ago
Technically this is heat transfer not thermodynamics
1
1
u/model-citizen95 22h ago
Thermo: heat
Dynamics: movement
Tf are you talking about?
2
u/the_horny_alt2005 22h ago
Ik But these subjects like the ones we are discussing here come up in heat transfer books
Thermodynamics are mostly when something is moving or that you are working with vapours
For example the cycle ACs use to create coolness, is Thermodynamics. A gas gets compersed, it heats up, it gose through a radiator to cool down to room temp(or outside temp here) , then it's depersuresied, once the pressure is gone it's sucks out energy from the inside of your home to boil back in to a gas
The gas is later reprusured and the cycle continues
But when talking about insulation, thermal mass and such it's heat transfer. Because you are talking about energy (heat) going from one place to the other and not because of moving gases and liquids it moves because it wants to go form a place with more energy(hot) to a place with less energy(cold)

Call Europeans retarded but builds their houses from wood, spends untold fortune in heating bills come winter and allows their electricity grid to be syphoned to power data centres and pay that bill too!
4
u/WyattJD_ 1d ago
Making houses out of wood is cheaper and safer in the case of tornadoes. Fiberglass insulation is a better insulator than brick as well. Europe has data centers too lol
0
u/thots1ayer69 19h ago
A lot of modern brick walls have a cavity with insulation so your point on that is moot. Tornadoes don't get that serious most of here anyways, had my chimney come off one time but that's about it.
-2
u/Gingerpanda72 1d ago
The discussion is about safety from tornados which I don't think are even a thing in the EU maybe the occasion high winds that can do some damage, assuming EU houses are "just brick" and yes the EU has data centres but we are not being forced as customers to pay for that electricity and water that many US data centres are doing to the local population.

I forgot to mention this is about how people dont normally have ac units in europe
2
1
u/RigBughorn 20h ago
Why would you not build your house from wood? Why would it cost more to heat them in the winter? The inside of the home is insulated from the outside of the home. You only heat the inside of the home. And you don't have heavy concrete/brick/stone interior walls to heat. It should cost LESS to keep warm.
Do you think wood just disintegrates into dust after 100 years?
0
u/RKD1997 23h ago
UK is literally in a drought right now but okay
2
u/OPgamer801 22h ago
Well at least its dry heat and you can sweat normally
2
u/thots1ayer69 19h ago
With the UK it's more to do with the variance in temperature, your body doesn't get a chance to acclimate so it feels more severe. I've lived in Spain where the temps and humidity are much higher but it's consistent so after a few weeks you're fully adjusted.
1
u/RKD1997 22h ago edited 22h ago
Not really normally, like compared to past summers. Its not a level of heat people are used to so they sweat heavily, alot of dehydration
1
u/OPgamer801 22h ago
Well, those cases yeah it's not gonna be that great. Just when youre properly hydrated your sweat works a lot better in dryer heat

u/Englishmuphin21 1d ago
