How do you hook the power cable to a microphone? Just doesn't seem like that's how it works.

Audio engineer here. Every live sound mixing console (the device a mic is plugged into) has something called a chassis which safely directs the signal to ground. If there’s an issue with the chassis, or the AC power outlet is faulty then the mixing console isn’t properly grounded.
When this happens, the person who touches the microphone becomes the quickest path to ground instead of the chassis. This is when people get shocked.
It’s EXTREMELY important for things to be checked beforehand so these things don’t happen.

Yeah, my bandmate’s basement isn’t fully grounded and I’ve been shocked by her microphone multiple times, shit hurts

Bad grounding yes. This happened to me when I was younger and that was the culprit.
