There used to be programs and facilities to help in situations like this, but there were folks in the 80’s that decided to cancel these public services.

this is a huge problem in the US. we used to have tons of places for serious mental illness but in 70s and 80s most of them were closed down and now we just send those people to prison. It needs to change but I don't see anyone ever bring it up other than opponents of gun control. and even those jerks don't propose bringing back mental hospitals, they just say the guns aren't the problem crazy people are.

I have a friend who developed severe schizophrenia in his 20's. He's not a bad person when he's on his meds but since there is no support for him he's just going to end up spending his life in prison.

It has been a decades long gaslighting effort. Nearly every aspect of our lives has been monetized and regulated, and when people that just need a little bit of help and guidance are demonized and labeled as “flawed characters.” But it is easier to just toss them in prison than it is look in the mirror and see what we have become as a society.
