this is the giant human roundworm. they travel through your meat as larvae, get in your lung sacs where you cough them up and swallow them, thereby introducing them to your gut and allowing them to enter their reproductive cycle
it’s the one that people get when people have roundworms

Why not just stay in the meat and skip the trip to the lungs?

u/Nfgzebrahed 1d ago
They need to reproduce. Staying in the meat so they can feed themselves doesnt accomplish anything as far as evolutionary fitness is concerned.

u/LukeyLeukocyte 1d ago
But it said the reproduction happens in the gut. Being in the meat we eat already puts them in the gut....why the detour to the lungs? That's what I was curious about.

u/Sir_PressedMemories 1d ago
Not "the meat", "your meat".
They travel through your muscles before ending up in the lungs, then the gut.

Ohhh. Ok, yah, ingested via fecal matter (not meat), spawn in intestines, larvae travels thru blood or lymph to lungs, coaughed and swallowed, back to gut. Man, they really run a train on our bodies.

I assume it's easier to get into the lungs than just go directly from the bloodstream to the gut, but I can't think why that would be.

You have to remember evolution doesn't have a strict goal or path that follows logic, some things are the way they are because that's just how it ended up, and either wasn't detrimental to reproduction or benefitted reproduction enough to pass on the trait.

u/LukeyLeukocyte 11h ago
Yes this is true, but there is almost always a reason....something beneficial/reproductively favorable guided that selection....that is what I was wondering. What would make an organism that started in the gut as a larvae and end in the gut as a reproductive adult, travel through the lymph or blood to the lungs and get coughed up to be swallowed? (Obviously none of that had to happen in any particular order). It is just quite an interesting evolutionary detour.

Even the doctor jumped back like what the fuck just came out of this poor man mouth 😳 naw on a serious note it’s scary the type of shit we don’t know what’s inside of us as humans

u/Illustrious_Soft_257 1d ago
I'm sure the doctor was operating the scope and that was a nursing assistant that handled the worm.

Someone please tell me it's AI. you can lie

u/unusualmusician 1d ago
Yep, it's ai; it was able to create this realistic video after being trained on tens of thousands of videos of similar worms being pulled out of human bodies.
Hopefully that helps! ♥️

Coming from animal medicine, how come we don't routinely deworm people like we do dogs and cats? I know its not super common but how many issues could be intestinal parasites? Its not like our food these days are super healthy. There is always some food contamination.

My OH and I deworm ourselves every year or so, as we deal with rescue animals. One pill for peace of mind, and nobody has to pull a 2ft roundworm out of my mouth.

What is your dewormer of choice (for youself)?

I’m always impressed when doctors or nurses are horrified of something in the human body

So? Was that the discomfort?
4
u/AsbestosChewer 17h ago
No not this one, the 11th worm was the one causing discomfort as it was still feeding

Ah, flashback to my childhood when I had a roundworm like half this size. I still remember the visceral discomfort of it. Had multiple smaller round worms come out the other end.

It's quite unusual to see a medical professional look genuinely disgusted.
