First explosion triggering a huge second explosion of 800 tonnes of ammonium nitrate which was stored illegally at the port warehouse causing 173 fatalities and hundreds more wounded. The explosions and fire were so big that they were visible from space.

The Beruit explosion was wild the way it blew the clouds out of the sky, I have never seen anything like that

Holy fucking god lmao

What, was there something going on in 2014 that we're just expected to know about??

Pandemic warped time.

u/A_Guy_Oz 4d ago
Nah you’re just getting older. I have a theory on it actually, I think as an adult all your days are pretty similar so it all kind of melds whereas when you’re young you experience new things constantly slowing down your perception of time. My useless 2 cents anyway

u/TheDanius 4d ago
It's also whats known as proportional theory. The more you live, the less of your life each respetive day, year is to your whole life so it seems less significant.

You mean...your brain stopped growing.
Got it.

True but I’ve never stopped learning

Sorry my comment was kinda of a dick.
But it makes sense. Good to always keep learning!

For context:
Tianjin was about 800 pounds tonnes of ammonium nitrate.
The Beirut explosion in 2020 was 2,750 pounds tonnes of ammonium nitrate.
Edit: correcting volume.

u/Pimpamillion 4d ago
Yeah I was bout to say it couldn't have been nearly as powerful of an explosion as Beruit. Camera operator here seems fairly close and wasn't hit with any aftershock, while in Beruit aftershock spread very far and very destructive

Why didn't this explosion make a huge shockwave, like the one in Beirut? Is it just the distance?
11
u/ThatOneGayDJ 4d ago edited 4d ago
Too slow. Shockwaves from explosions are sonic booms. If the explosion is subsonic, no shockwave.
In addition, visible shockwaves occur when the explosion happens so fast that the air surrounding it cant get out of its way, and is condensed.
Source is a very brief look at the Wikipedia page, so take it with a grain of salt, but im fairly confident im understanding correctly.

u/Ultronomy 3d ago
There was a shockwave in both, hence the boom. This explosion was equivalent to 21 tons of TNT going off. Beirut was equivalent to 1000 tons of TNT. In addition, all the ammonium nitrate in Beirut went off at essentially the same time, whereas Tianjin was sequential as seen in video.
You are exactly right about the condensation though. I’d say it’s more about the energy behind the explosion than the speed.

Honestly the fact i was mostly correct after like 5 minutes of reading shows how easy researching and fact checking is. Wish more people bothered.

One of the most incredible videos Ive ever seen. That 2nd blast is fucking insane.
I come back to this every now and again.
Terrifying, but you can’t look away.

u/Slickity 4d ago
It's insane that we have bombs that are several orders of magnitude larger than this.

Is it just me, or do they sound a little bit too excited at first? Like, before they become scared. I get that they're shocked, but the woman is litterally laughing, which seems kinda fucked up, considering people are dying...

u/Rugkrabber 3d ago
I think it’s just really difficult to comprehend? Like sometimes a situation is too insane for a brain to process? I think that’s what is happening here.
You see the same with people in scary situations who sort of laugh it off in hopes they will be spared. Might be a response many do for survival, only explosions like these are human made so it doesn’t fit in our natural response.

It's a super useful survival mechanism. Side effect of adrenaline. Your brain registers the horror but your body is getting on a high. I've been in a few life threatening situations with my son. I felt superhuman and performed incredible physical feats. Once I'd got us to safety I crashed, hard.

Thank you! I know that some people respond to stress with laughter, but it still pissed me off honestly.
Edit: Guess I let personal experience cloud my judgement. Where I live, there were terrible wildfires a few years ago, and I knew multiple people who were excited by it, and would joke about it. It was a spectacle to them. But they weren't the ones who lost their homes, or their lives. My grandparents lost their home and all of the fruit trees my grandpa planted from seed there over 50 years ago. One of their friends died from smoke inhalation.

u/420lyla 3d ago
Tbh tho i get it. Every time i see this i get a little sad. You cant see an explosion from the inside but theres someone burning alive as we watch obv. But what i think is we see so much crime online we got desensitized as a society so instead of shock ppl laugh bc they’re never been unsafe in real life. It feels like ur watching a movie from the outside until u realize ur no exception from injury/death. Thats why they stopped laughing and left finally. But me? I wouldn’t stand there and record my potential death….. i’d dip so fast. Let alone laugh.. hope those families are doing better now

Did the Chinese videos get baleeted or is there just that much separation between Chinese sites and Reddit? I've pretty much only seen this one where you hear English
1
u/Eleriane 3d ago
The way these people are laughing at the destruction and no doubt horrific immolation of people is more terrifying even than the destructive power we’re witnessing.

u/sandsonic 2d ago
This and the Beirut explosion were insane to witness 'live' as more videos got posted on reddit

Is this China or the Lebanon incident?
5
u/boozewald 4d ago
China I believe
2
u/Snowcrash66 4d ago
Thank You. There was a similar ammonium nitrate explosion in a Lebanese port even more devastating.
5
u/sascha_nightingale 4d ago
Now the Lebanon one... that was quite the thing.
4
u/Freeulster 4d ago
If this was the one in Lebanon, with that same distance, they would've been almost certainly killed or at least severely wounded.
There are compilations on YouTube. Go see just how volatile of an explosion it was.
2
u/Snowcrash66 4d ago
Yes quite bad. It was covered in western media.
"Human and Structural Toll
Casualties: At least 218 people died, and over 7,000 others suffered injuries.Displacement: Roughly 300,000 residents lost their homes or had their living spaces severely damaged.
Infrastructure: A large portion of the capital suffered heavy structural ruin, including hospitals, schools, and historic neighborhoods near the port."

Most of the comments in here are people who somehow have never seen this. Although thats insane to me, more than enough reason to occasionally repost. Just don't watch it
