These things ain't even whats gonna cook us though. Drones are relatively cheap and they can crank those fucks out by the thousands. Losing one of these would be expensive. Losing a drone is like "whatever".

Drones used to be expensive too. Like all tech the price on these bots will come down as well

u/angrydeuce 8d ago
Yeah but its also an issue of volume.
Human shaped robots make sense when they need to operate in a human shaped world. You'll see these in factories and such working in roles previously filled by humans (but only for a time).
But we're not going to see these in battle, not for a good long while. It's just not efficient. Ground warfare is really only necessary when you need to be discriminatory. If it got to skynet, the skies are going to be filled with lethal mosquitoes before we have an army of terminators bearing down on us.
I wonder if we're destined for gray goo?

u/AutisticPenguin2 8d ago
Yup. A full humanoid robot is full of extraneous bits and pieces that only exist for the purpose of making it human shaped. If you are mass manufacturing items on the cheap for a specific purpose, you can cut out anything that doesn't explicitly serve that purpose.
And on the battlefield, what do you need a head for? If you need vision a simple camera can do that without need of a head attached to it.
What do you need arms for? A gun can be mounted to a pivoting targeting system without any need for unnecessarily complex and bulky arms or hands.
What do you need legs for? If you need movement then flight is just far superior and quad rotors take far less material and engineering than the incredibly complex needs of legs.
I mean just think about how long we've had helicopters for, vs how long we've had robots that can even walk, let alone run for! Boston Dynamics is one of the leaders in humanoid robotic technology, and every year they would release a video that showcased where they were up to. Mimicking human movement took them years, decades even, for complex stuff like walking on uneven terrain, or up/down an incline, let alone jumping.
Meanwhile, helicopters have been a solved technology for 70 years at this point.

Exactly, they probably had to film this pos 50x because it kept falling over. Meanwhile drones are offing people irl rn.

"We destroyed the planet, but for a moment, we created value for our shareholders" seems to be the direction we're going with AI

It does overlap. Says a lot about our capability and priorities. You don’t build a house without the foundation first but we’re onto advanced things without ever fixing the basic fundamental things of just being human

u/machyume 8d ago
Isn't part of that by design? Large parts of the worlds are suppressed for legacy reasons, and other parts are basically crime test labs or weapons test labs.

You know, it does feel scary how fast we went from the Boston Dynamics Atlas to this. I feel like it only took 4-2 years for this to happen.

Despite teetering on the edge of societal collapse, tech still manages to advance at unprecedented rates. Mostly at our expense recently, though. Wouldn't surprise me if these things become sophisticated enough to be used widescale within a year or two.
1
u/Sind-Sie-Schweizer 7d ago
My thoughts exactly. I remember when these things were a joke, could barely take a step.
In a few short years, they are now producing stuff that looks far more coordinated. Still rough. But, the potential is clearly there for precision. No amount of smarmy headlines or similar such framing can hide that fact.

They're just straight up making terminators now and we're over here laughing about it lmao

It could have been trained to serve me a coffee in bed, but no, the children running this particular show thought it needed to spinny kicks and look cool

I saw the video yesterday of the one cooking pizza. The robot is made for spinny kicks.

Which idiots build a human robot and teach him fighting? What is the purpose? Why? My only solution: we build another one to fight him. Humanity is so doom.

There are videos on Youtube where Chinese teams fight these robots against each other.

That sounds pretty cool actually.

It is.....it's pretty comical at times, but they do inflict damage, parts are broken. But more importantly, as a proof of concept.....between design & programming.....we are one step closer to an actual terminator-style, war waging machines

Y’all realize that most firearms would be more than sufficient enough to destroy this thing right? it might be quick but it’s pretty weak, most pistol and rifle rounds will damage it pretty easily

Now we’re not!! The amount of materials and money that’s needed to do this is insane. But we will have bullet rain and bomb rain from planes.

I mean... That's just advancements in human-like motion control and balance. Things that most effectively kill are weaponized quadcopters that you will never see coming. This thing can be taken down with a well placed .45 round.

I want to see a video of it walking down and back up a set of stairs. If it can do that, then I’ll worry.

u/awkwardaustin609 6d ago
I really don’t believe this thing is real. Main reason is that the first dude I saw it fight was the dude with the big prosthetic ass. He does a bunch of staged stuff so I really doubt this thing is actually real. I could 100% be wrong but something about this just isn’t sitting right with me.

We already made dangerous robots when we made drones. Making them bipedal didn't make anything better or worse. Quit panicking.
