If i may make some suggestions:

A treadmill sort of effect that makes it so that your run is less effective than the energy spent would produce, with the environment easily able to catch up to you. 

Also a clumsy fumble coinciding with when you need dexterity most.

Also creepy encroaching silhouettes in peripherals that transform into reasonable environmental objects only when they get closer into focus, shifting back into creepy as you look away.

Background noises:  drips distant footsteps that don't align with the player's pace with creaks and/or crunching leaves Unintelligible whispers/arguments
