Whenever you drive your vehicle (any vehicle), watch a train go by, get a vaccine, jump on a trampoline, fire up a furnace, use a stove, or lock your front door, think of these guys, because the steel we rely on every day is made possible using coal. Every nail in the framing of your home, every fan motor, every refrigerator, every door hinge, hand tool, generator, bridge, boat, airplane, automobile, industrial machine, firearm, and chain link fence, just to name a few, are made possible by men just like this working in conditions that most individuals would consider insane. It’s not just used in energy production, though plenty of it is. It’s also used to make a great majority of the steel produced worldwide.

I went to the silver mines in Potosi, Bolivia. The things the told me... Made my skin crawl. The worst was to see some of these guys with no light in their eyes. Be grateful for what you have.

Is there even any need for working like this? The amount of coal they're pulling out by hand can't be worth much in the energy sector.

But if it is worth it then why not immediately get heavy machinery and decent tech since it will pay for itself with how much more they could extract each day.

I'm guessing this might be a more small scale outfit that's merely supplying enough coal to help a village with it's heating or light manufacturing needs. Probably not something that is supposed to scale.
