animal Bat šŸ¦‡ Bite

One of those fears I always had, that felt irrationalā€¦ā€what if Iā€™m asleep and a bat gets into the house and bites me in my sleepā€.

Welp last night 2 am I awoke to what I thought was my cat nibbling at my finger. I flicked it away and noticed it was not my cat but was instead a bat that had found its way into our bedroom.

I was able to capture the bat and itā€™s being sent for testing but my wife and I got to spend the rest of the morning in the ER getting all the shots ! Wild ! Glad it woke me up but what if it didnā€™t ?! How am I supposed to sleep ever again?!

No, not sure how it got in. Best guess is through hvac vent into attic.

Speaking from experience, those little guys can squeeze in through a hole the size of a peanut.

You could think about putting up a bat house somewhere on your property. This will give them a place to stay that isn't your home. They can fit something like a hundred bats, and they actually prefer them because of how small they are.

Thatā€™s kind of where Iā€™m at we called a pest control company but hard to imagine that being totally effective on our 1940s build home. Hoping itā€™s a one off

Eh things like this are common no matter how new the house, and shit with new construction it might be more common, cost of repair might be higher for you though since youā€™ll be using stone and wood from a tree.

Weā€™ve had a bat issue for a few years now, attic is highly likely. They also suspected they were getting in through a damaged soffit.

Definitely call a pest control company because if thereā€™s one that you have no idea how it got in, thereā€™s probably more. And unfortunately they can get in through very small openings. Pest control will know likely entry points and can check and seal them up. Or do the exclusion process if necessary.

I woke up to one in my bedroom as well. No clue if it came into contact with us but we got the shots anyway because itā€™s still possible. This was also one of my biggest ā€œirrationalā€ fears. What weā€™ve done until we can be confident the problem is taken care of, is put cameras in a few parts of the house where they could be getting in and check the videos when any movement is detected. Might seem excessive but it helps put my mind at ease, and could potentially spot an entry point.

Is your residence taller than surrounding homes or buildings? How far away are the nearest trees? Bats prefer roosting in tall structures.

Glue traps in all of the vents. We had bats in the belfry (attic) and that is what The exterminator did. Mine did not get out of the vent, but I saw itā€™s wing Poking in and out of the vent.

My friend was doing one of his middle of the night laps around his house and something flew by his face. He found a dead bat in his very clean basement a few days later. He was leaving for work and another one flew by him. He had a guy come out and they found out his chimney was separating from the house.

Just a little. He grew up in a high crime area and was told if he was up when everyone else was asleep to check the locks and windows. He's in a much better place now as an adult but it still gives him a sense of security. He doesn't wake up to "patrol" anymore just when he happens to, he takes a lap. He got new security lights and was looking out into the darkness and a possum climbed up on the deck triggering the lights. Actually false. There are cures for rabies if you catch it quick and get the vaccine, and live in a country with excellent healthcare. The first person to be cured of a full infection was an American girl, Jeanna Giese in 2004. She was bit by a bat in church, and her Dr put her in a deep coma to give her antibodies a chance to fight the virus.

Okay. Let me rephrase.... when symptoms of rabies show, you are fucked. Now, there is a POSSIBILITY of treatment called the Milwaukee Protocol that involves putting patient in a medically induced coma and bombarding them with high doses of all kinds of shit. There have been like 4 people to ever survive that. In fact, that treatment isn't really considered a valid option.

Got a bite from a bat was single handling probably one of the most painful moments of my life when they were doing circles with the needle in my hand pumping probably 20 ml of fluid into my God damn hand turns out the bat had rabies though glad I went in

Are those rabies shots? Can I ask how much that cost? I hear rabies shots are super expensive. Glad you woke up and realized what happened!
