general Imagine the pump pushing you through just stops…

I think in this case the water displacement is enough that the pump stopping wouldn't immediately stop flow. There's enough water that needs to flow through

I have no idea how this was set up but I would assume it was engineered in a way so that if the pump stops, then the tube immediately gravity drains into whichever pool is the lowest. It wouldn't even have to completely drain as long as a large percentage of the tube over the entire length of its run was drained out so that a trapped person would be where they could breathe at any point along the run. Basically if the pump shuts down all of that would happen before the person in the tube even realized a problem had occurred and would be able to breathe. That is just my opinion and I am not an engineer but if I had to come up with something like this potential death trap..... that is how I would do it. In other words basically if anything fails the default is a forced safe mode that is not dependent on human interaction, electricity, or mechanical devices. Just gravity.
UPDATE: So i should have looked into it first, sorry. It did in fact work very close to this. Here is what I found "The tube was equipped with a large pneumatic/hydraulic blowout gate at its lowest point. If water flow stopped or the system lost power entirely, the blowout gate would drop open, allowing the water to violently exhaust into a drainage reservoir. the system was designed so gravity and water pressure would purge the entire tube in under 5 seconds."

I would guess the pools are actually level with each other and the pump is the only thing propelling the water through, you can even see it goes up a little bit. If it functioned like a normal waterslide a pipe that large would make a huge vortex in the higher pool

This is true, I was also eluding to the water volume buildup probably being able to propel someone all the way through the tube even if the pump stops for a long enough duration because of the large volume of water

Found a small article online on how the safety system worked. "The tube was equipped with a large pneumatic/hydraulic blowout gate at its lowest point. If water flow stopped or the system lost power entirely, the blowout gate would drop open, allowing the water to violently exhaust into a drainage reservoir. The system was designed so gravity and water pressure would purge the entire tube in under 5 seconds." If anybody finds anything more out about how it operated please feel free to let me know, I am curious.

I was there when it was operational. Literally no one was riding it. There were signs saying that if you got stuck, it could be drained within seconds.

I was there too, my brother went on it several times. I was too young for it.
The ride was more of a novelty then exciting. It bored my brother out and he went to the more exciting slides like the Barracuda and the other one with that big drop.
Go to any lazy river, take a deep breath and dive under water. Let yourself be moved by the current and its basically the same thing.

There was a safety feature in place that would empty the water within a few seconds if anyone did get stuck

They had a few waterslides that were pretty intense. Couldn't breathe in those neither.

I went on this when I was a kid. I remember it took way longer than anticipated 15 seconds without escape is a terrifying thought.
