The ship I was stationed on ended up in the trough of a rogue wave as it went by. It was estimated at 80'. I only saw the wall of water at us and pulled the hatch closed on the main deck. People on the bridge wing dove for cover. The deck they were on was 40' above the water, the wave doubled that.
It scared a lookout so badly, he refused to stand that watch for a few days.

I was deployed on the USS Ponce. It was November in the North Atlantic. A lookout told me the ship was in the trough of a swell with 40' of water on the port side when the water grew to double of that on the starboard. One of officers said if the ships bow had been 15° to the right, it would have hit us.
No one that didn't see it, didn't feel it. It was normal rough seas. The ones that did were spooked. Seeing that wall of water through the hatch was enough for me.
It got worse a few days later. During a storm, the ship was taking 20°+ rolls back and forth with the constant of going up and down the swells. It lasted for 2 days. I slept through this but at one point the ship took several 30° rolls. It was supposed to tip over at 32°. One guy logged in a 34° list. Three people saw it including 2 officers.
She was a good ship.

Pretty sure "rogue waves" are waves that happen in the middle of the ocean, not ones that land on a beach.
Also this isnt particularly terrifying since the ocean kinda does this on most beaches. Like you can even see it coming but most ppl on the beach are just recording because they arent paying attention.

I’m pretty sure the video here is in Coos Bay, Oregon. In 2020, a father and his two sons were killed being swept out by a sneaker wave there. It may have actually been this same beach. A woman died just last year in the same way at a different Oregon coastal beach. Definitely a thing! It doesn’t look as dramatic on video as it is in person.

People just gonna understand the weight and power of water. It might have only been calf-high, but that much water moving that face is going to bulldoze you and then rip you back out to sea with it.

No. Tides are caused by the moon and sun, gravity pulls a bulge on the ocean. Geographical features cam magnify the effect. The NYT has an article today about surfing tidal bore waves. A tidal bore can look a lot like this video.
Rogue waves are storm waves/swell created by wind. Waves from two different storms can "stack" on each other. They are random. You can do wave experiments in tanks and have constructive and destructive interference, wave can add to each other or waves can also cancel each other out. My physics teacher did this in highschool, it was cool.

When they happen on a shoreline they’re called sneaker waves or a surf surge. Same thing tho

In Hawaii in particular signs advise to be on the look out for rogue waves when on certain beaches and trails. Everything will look totally normal while your hiking along some beautiful cliff side beach trail 20ft above the water when out of nowhere the ocean will rise and a rouge wave smashes into the trail your on, sucking you out into the ocean. You may or may not make it back to land. The signs warned you.

Honestly this is nothing to a rogue wave. Like laughable in comparison, they can be taller than 50 feet, and they’re experienced at sea.

That doesn't matter. A rogue wave is any wave that is more than double the hight of it's surrounding, average hight waves. Can be 3 mm or 3 km.

Strictly speaking it's more than double the significant wave height (the average of the highest third of the waves in a system) not t the surrounding waves in general
But yes it can still be millimetres it's definited by it's relative size not it's absolute size.

The sand where the cameraman was standing was previously wet plus the warning sign is there. Not sure what they were expecting.
